Meh, with unlimited takes, a couple of backup cars, and plenty of video splicing, anybody would be bound to get it right sooner or later. Kind of cool visually, but I'm more impressed by actual rally drivers who only get one pass.

My thoughts exactly.

Thus why he's nowhere near WRC material. Pastrana may be another story. But still, Block might make a mean drifter, or maybe just stick with being an exhibition driver like he has been doing.

I feel the same way, but it's great driving nonetheless.

Personally, I found the camera work, the slowmotion bits, and the artsy stuff cooler than the driving itself. Also, that Subaru looks great! Most of those stunts were a repeat from the first video, but I can't not cheer enough when I see him throwing the car violently into that first very long right corner 👍

I just watched the clip, and sitting at home with spare time i switched on my ps3 and fired up GT5P and took the '07 Subaru for some gymkhana @ Suzuka.

I did a couple of turns which i improvised with, and i found out that we could actually run a little GTP Gymkhana tournament.

My improvised course looked like that:

Start in Free Run of 750PP Suzuka Pro with Max HP and min Weight.

Went in sideways for the left turn, made a 720 inside the chicane, went out onto start-finish, handbrake U turn into Pitlane (driving the wrong way) exiting pit (at original pit entrance) driving down start finish again, do a 540, head back (wrong direction) start finish- U turn into pit (facing correct direction)- driving down pitland and U turn onto start finish (wrong way again)

After that im still looking for some improvised courses...also interesting is Daytona...

What do you guys think?

Chris

Does Block even participate in D1GP and etc?

Let's see you do it.. :)

Give me several cars, hundreds of tires, and unlimited passes, and I'll write Shakespeare in burnt rubber.

[edit] I'm not saying the boy can't drive, because he can. But this stuff is just not that spectacular considering you can tell from the tire marks that he takes dozens of passes at a given turn to get it just right. And then they splice the best of those hundreds of tries together to make 1 run.

It's like building a Metallica guitar solo out of dozens of snippets. Sounds awesome on the record - but can you play it live?

What he did wasn't unlimited though, I'm sure they still had a schedule and budget to adhere to. Sure it wasn't one continuous thing but I have to imagine Block is still a pretty skilled driver to pull out stuff like that.

By the time you'd be done, we'd all be 6ft under due to ageing :)
Nah, it wasn't anything personal against you. I'm just curious to why people are questioning and speculating on this.. It won't make them better, only make him look worse. So what if it takes him several attempts? I'd guess the tire marks are just as much for practice, we don't know if the cameras were on or off during the first runs, do we? That's all I'm saying.. Who are we to judge? :)

The driving, the filming, the editing, the quality, the shoes, everything is just amazing!

No-one was saying this was done on one pass. In fact, they probably had to get a pollution waiver simply to break the fluorescent light tubes because of the mercury vapor. Of course this was done and practiced and they killed 10 sets of tires, but it's worth it for one hell of a commercial for Ecko.

No-one was saying this was done on one pass.

I'm not claiming that anybody else was claiming it was done in one pass.

I'm just responding to the general hysteria and overhype awarded to both this episode, and particularly the previous episode. It gets posted multiple times on every car-oriented board, it gets emailed around to mass lists, and everybody is all OMGWTFBBQ YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS AWESUM DRIFT VIDEO !!!!111!1.

It's good. It's fun to watch. But it's not God's Gift to Driving.

Indeed. We are not saying Kim Block cannot drive, because he certainly can drive. However, many people sound as if Block did all this by improvisation over 1 hotlap. Judging by all the skidmarks, it took many tries to get every section perfect. (And after some video clipping and pasting here and there)

How do you know they didn't shoot it in one lap? Just sayin' you gotta be careful with what you're saying.. :) lol

It's good. It's fun to watch.

And that's why it's posted everywhere I guess

Skidmarks mean practice. That there isn't a skidmark going straight into the water or straight into a bent pole is good enough for me :)

His spoiler made the empty trailer explode...........

Everything I learned in school was wrong............

:irked:👍

Cool vid of course... but I liked the first clip a bit better... its getting a bit too artistic now, when it should actually be about the drifting :) Just like other people said... whats up with that paintball guy?? why is he there??

I suppose its an exhibition of both the amount of power the car has/how tight a turning radius it has. also, it looks pretty damn cool.

My thoughts exactly! As you can see by the tire marks it looks like he had plenty of chances to master the course. In real rally driving you are basically going through the course by your notes being read to you by your navigator and have a high probability of the surface changes from the last run or last season. It takes a lot more to be a great rally driver although I'm sure Ken is a very talented driver, he has nothing to Colin Mcrea or any of the other rally legends. He's going to have a lot more to learn to be in thier class. The rock star persona is not going to cut it in the real world of WRC. Although I would love to se an American driver do well in WRC.

People seem to forget that WRC drivers recce the course before they flog along it, otherwise they wouldn't have pace notes to start with. ;) The only difference between this practice and KB's is that KB has to be all out on every practice run to make sure his angles are right for the full run. 👍

I'm not saying he's god's gift to driving, but if you aren't impressed by car control like that then you need another hobby.

I beg to differ, I think rally drivers have to be all out because they are racing the clock. Where as with KB's situation his just filmming a promo ad so he get's to shoot as many runs as he needs to get it perfect "in the shot" so he can either take it easy to get right. Camera angles can be decieving by using slow motion shots and other effects so they can edit out the shots that make it look to easy.

Okay, with that I am not saying what his doing is easy. You obviously need talent to do this thing we all love, drifting , dougnuts, 360 turns..etc whatever else. All we are saying is that impressing as it is, it's still not as impressive as when competing WRC and to backup that point if he was really as good as the top WRC drivers he would be racing in WRC. I am sure KB even knows that. That's probably the reason why he became a rally driver.

That was good, did you see Jame's eyes bulge out when going over the jump:lol:

OH, come ON, Captain Slow, You seriously didn't know you were going to step into an Extreme Sports video?

Gymkhana on a budget. Warning, contains acts of stupidity, of dubious legality and some reasonable pedalling by a actual rally driver :dopey:
