Greetings! I've been running a semi-private ladder, and we're opening things up for new members. All skill levels welcome! If you're interested, just:

  1. reply, so I can add you to the ladder
  2. get a car up to spec (see regulations below)
  3. find out the next track
  4. Send me a PSN friend request (PSN: TakahashiRyos-ke, with a dash), mentioning King of the Road
  5. show up on Sunday night, 11pm Thursday night, 11:30pm EDT in my lounge

Although several rules and regulations are not enforceable by the game system, participants are bound by honour to adhere to all stipulations.

- no race cars, no RM cars, no concept cars, no tune shop cars

- Car regulations will likely change every 6 weeks or so.
- It is permissible to change cars from race to race.

Race settings:
- heavy damage

Driving settings:

Clean driving is expected:

- Speaking during a race should be minimized
- Speaking during a race to help prevent collisions is allowed
- Friendly chatter before and after races is expected! :) Being shy and quiet is discouraged. ;)

Ladder System

Races will be head-to-head: just 2 participants per race. The lower ranked driver chooses whether to lead or to follow. Off the start of the race, the two drivers must fall into line heading into the first corner according to the agreed order. Where it is ambiguous, the first corner will be identified before the race. The behind driver must not pass during the first corner. After the first corner, the race begins.

- If the higher ranked driver wins, the lower driver drops one rank.
- If the lower ranked driver wins, the drivers switch ranks.
- Failure to submit race results by the deadline (Tuesday morning) results in one rank drop for each absentee driver.

Example:

Starting with a ladder like this (A is top ranked, D is lowest ranked):
ABCD

If A wins and C wins, the ladder becomes: ACBD
If B wins and C wins, the ladder becomes: BACD
If A wins and D wins, the ladder becomes: ADBC
If B wins and D wins, the ladder becomes: BADC

Each night, the top-ranked driver races against the 2nd-best driver, 3rd vs. 4th, 5th vs. 6th, etc. The races will be run one after the other, starting with the lowest ranked drivers, going up the ladder. During the race, those not racing would watch. For paired drivers who are not adjacent in the ladder:

- If the higher driver wins, there is no rank change for either driver.
- If the lower driver wins, he jumps up half the distance to the higher driver (rounded in favour of the lower driver).

Newcomers start at the bottom of the ladder.

----

Schedule:
- Tracks and pairings are announced ahead of time; usually on Wednesday morning, but no later than Friday
- Designated race time is Sunday night, 11pm EDT (8pm PDT)
- Designated race time is Thursday night, 11:30pm EDT (8:30pm PDT)
- Drivers are permitted to race at any alternative time agreeable to both drivers

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

What kind of tyres are limited in this? is it racing softs or what? i see it isnt specified..

D-Max: It's specified in the Car Regulations. Sports Hards -- for now. I'll be changing up the car regulations every 6 weeks or so.

Course 3: Gwillimbury

The next course is now available for download. Go to my profile and download from there. The course is called Gwillimbury. It is based on the Toscana night theme again, but this course is a bit easier than Collingwood. Not as many low speed corners at the end, and I made the road wider, to increase the possibility of passing. There are still at least two totally blind, low-speed corners (perhaps a bit unrealistic, heh), so watch out. The heavy damage setting remains in effect. On this course, I think there is a lot of room to take either a good line or a bad line, a good speed or a cautious speed. Hopefully this results in some exciting racing. The "first corner" is the first right hander. There is a long length of almost-straight lefts preceding it.

In light of last week's races, I'll just put out some reminders:

- avoid rear-ending your opponent
- pass only when you're sure you have a significant speed advantage and a big-enough opening
- when leading, try to remain as aware as possible of your opponent's position using your mirror and side views (maybe even audio cues)

Pairings for Course 3:

TakahashiRyos-ke (6) vs. Slammedc (5)
DeuceOfClub (4) vs. agentorunge (3)
GT0_malloc (2) vs. CrAzY_bAsSiSt_83 (1)

As usual, designated race night is Sunday at 11pm EDT, but feel free to arrange an alternate time with your opponent if you think you can't make it. Results submission deadline is Tuesday morning.

Hey,

I'd like to join, but can't make it until April 23, 2011. Sign me up for then when you get a chance? Thanks

After some discussion with active members, the KotR series will now be run on THURSDAY nights, at 11:30pm EDT (8:30 PDT). So the next race night will be THIS Thursday, April 21.

I will announce the track tonight.

I think this should get me more interested in grip racing online.

Question, you guys race different cars for different events right? Just curious lol. :dunce:

lildomplaya: The first few races are with the same vehicle regulations (see first post), but I will be posting new car regulations in two weeks or so.

No I mean like - if I used a Civic for the first race, can I choose a different car for the next race?

Yes, everyone is free to change up their car any time. You don't have to use the same car for a given series.

As awesome as this sounds and as much as I'd like to join, it's way too late for me.
Is there any way that if I were to join this it started an hour earlier?
I can't stay up until 11:30 on school nights. :(

gogatrs: You're welcome to join anyway, and we can arrange a weekly race with you at an alternative time. Our active members either prefer late at night, or are west coast. The time commitment on race nights is not very long, and we can run your race first.

11:30 for me too on school nights lol. But I'm a late sleeper, I shouldn't have a problem. Friend invite coming your way soon..

Course 4: Eiger Nordwand Short Track

4 laps.

Reminder that the new day and time for race night is Thursday, 11:30pm EDT (8:30pm PDT), starting this Thursday.

For lack of consistent participation from some, we are no longer going to have pairs set up in advance. Just show up on race night, and we'll pair drivers off starting from the lowest ranked drivers.

Unfortunately, the Playstation Network appears to be having major problems right now:
it may be a full day or two before we’re able to get the service completely back up and running.
(source: http://blog.us.playstation.com/ )

If PSN is still down by the time our race time rolls around, we'll move temporarily (just for this week) over to Sunday at 11:30pm EDT. Please subscribe to this forum thread if you haven't already so you can keep up to date.

Ditto. I got scared for a bit that I have missed this event lol. By the way, is it ok if I can record the race?

llidomplaya: Sure thing, many of us save the replays, and I sometimes make videos of stuff.

laughing73: I myself race without ABS, but I'd like to allow drivers to use it if they want, since some vehicles actually come with ABS, and even some other electronic aids like stability management or traction control, too.

Anyway, I'm sad that we couldn't have this week's race night, but on the bright side, that would mean that next week gets two race nights, Sunday and Thursday. :) That is, assuming they fix the problems by Sunday night. :-\

gogatrs: This is a pretty casual group. It isn't mandatory to be at every race night; nobody's going to be upset, and nobody will get in trouble or something. :) Show up whenever you can. The ladder will fluctuate however it will, with the more active members bubbling up to the higher rungs.

If the PSN is still down by tonight (which looks likely), next race night is postponed to Thursday, April 28, 11:30pm EDT.

Assuming PSN is up, next King of the Road race night will be Sunday May 1. (I won't be able to make Thursday April 28 regardless.)

Just thought I should bring this back up for those who forgot. Looks like the race will be this Thursday?

I was waiting for the PSN to be officially back up before saying anything about this series, but yes, assuming the PSN is back by Thursday night, we will start up again this Thursday, May 5 at 11:30pm EDT (8:30 PDT). Thanks for everyone's continued interest!

The course will be as previously announced: Eiger Nordwand Short Track, 4 laps.

The King of the Road series will continue this Thursday, May 19, 11:30 pm EDT (8:30 PDT). I will probably be online tonight, though, in case anyone wants to have a casual meetup. We can have some races that affect standings, if people are up for it, but there will be no obligation to do so.
