Wow thats crazy. I can't think of any place where you wouldn't get reprimanded for that, let alone have it hung on the wall.

Korea and Japan have had tension do to the history between them. The Korean gov't looks down on Japanese imports as well, thus why PC gaming is way bigger there than most console gaming from what I've read and heard.

Though I must say this is a bit shocking for it to be at such a young age... I'll try getting ahold of one of my Korean friends to see if he can fill in some details from the normal guy perspective on this all...

haha. That's ridiculous. why can't korea have the westernmost rocks or something?

Ah, this is not an easy question to resolve I'm afraid.

That's because it involves a rather deep and abiding racial hatred between the Korean and the Japanese (despite the fact that there is some telling evidence of racial intermixing, even in the Royal lines). Invasion, persecution, all kinds of things that a 21st century Western mind would not cognisance.

Also, build on top of that a government fearful of 'Capitalist Westernisation' and another Japanese invasion (even tho' the Japanese military has been heavily circumscribed since WWII) and you have an explosion waiting to happen.

The world view promulgated by the Korean leadership has to be seen to be believed - it just goes to show what government control of the media can achieve.

Still, the country has an interesting history (enough for me to write a campaign of Age of Empires scenarios for :D).

I just finished reading the entire thread on the link provided. There is just so much hate...... In the 90's, I was well aware of the South Korea's hatred towards Japanese. I remember reading about how Japanese cars were not allowed to be exhibited in Seoul's international auto shows, poll showed over 50% of the South Koreans hated the Japanese, etc. By the late 90's, I think most of the Japanese felt pretty close to South Korea, and it was peaceful. What changed everything was the dispute over the island of Takeshima, which according to S. Korea is Dokudo, I believe. I think it's been under control of South Korea since the 50's? Japan has been trying to negotiate a return of the Island to Japan, and this has upset South Korea, who claims the island were theirs, until the Imperial Japan took it away. Japanese politicians has been trying to take this dispute to the world court, but South Korea has been refusing to go along. To be fair, I don't think this is because S. Korea thinks it is wrong in its' claim to the island, but because Japan has everything to gain and S. Korea has everything to lose in this situation, since S. Korean military has already taken control of the island.

I don't want to upset anyone, but there is one thing I have to say. By teaching children hatred, South Koreans are damaging everyone's future including their own. They hate what our ancestors did, yet they are trying so hard to follow their act.

So, what's so damn important about this island that Japan is ready start all this trouble for?

I say, this is a classic case of "Finder's Keepers" and Japan should learn to just let go.

I guess it depends on who you talk to. I was in South Korea back in '96, and there certainly wasn't any hatred that I could see. In fact, one of the "desirable" items you could trade on the streets of Pohang was Japanese electronics. You'd be surprised what you could get for a Sony Walkman. The only things they wouldn't trade for were things that said "Made in China" on them. That's where the dislike was, from what we saw.

So whatever "hatred" there is is probably from the government moreso than the people. I don't see what the big deal is, myself. I spent almost a year in Okinawa, and I rather like the Japanese people. There's always a few that don't get along well, but for the most part they were quite friendly. And their arcades put our pathetic American versions to shame.

Currently, Japan has territorial dispute with four countries(I think :D). China and Taiwan over the Senkaku Islands(I don't know the Chinese name), Russia over couple of islands in the northern territory and this Takeshima/Dokudo thing with South Korea. If Koreans were peaceful about it, in my personal opinion, Japan should just let the Koreans keep the island. However, as aggresive as they've been, I'd be afraid to move the South Korean territory and EEZ closer to Japan. I'd want that buffer zone between Japan and South Korea. There's been many incidents of South and North Korean ships violating Japanese waters.

My original idea was for both Japan and South Korea sharing the island, with nobody "owning" the island, possibly someone neutral like U.N. in control.

Also, do remember that Japan is trying to settle this diplomatically in the World Court. South Koreans don't want it going to court. *throws hands up* Also, did you look at the link? I read the whole thing and no territorial dispute would excuse what the South Koreans are doing to their kids and Japanese visitors.

Trust me, it's all changed now. I've said that in the late 90's, Japan and S. Korea got along well, and looks like it was pretty close to that way in '96, when you were there. This is how ridiculous it is between us and the Koreans. I've made many Asian friends since coming to the U.S. Chinese, Phillipino, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Laotian, Guamanian(I had to look this up!), etc. Not one Korean. It's like as soon as they sense my nationality, they start hating me immediately. My mom has some Korean friends, but she is Jehovah's Witness, and so's her Korean friends. :D
