Is there a way to improve the lag with the wireless xbox controller?

If you're playing at 30fps and 60fps is an option (I'm on PC so this would mean selecting 60fps as your frame rate cap but I think you can do the same with an Xbox One X?) that would help, otherwise all you can do is plug it in.

I was not able to locate the 30fps and 60fps options with the xbox. I will have to buy a 30 feet long USB charging cable.
