Lap record on HUD -- what's the point?

I haven't really delved into this too much yet but I'm wondering what the use is of having a lap record readout on the HUD if it can only be updated during a time trial and not a race, and only takes into account your fastest ever lap (obviously using your fastest car) which makes for an unfair comparison to 99% of the cars in the game.

Even then I don't know for sure if it's linked to time trials specifically, I just did a couple of them last night and will see if the records carry over to simulation mode.

I can't remember how this works, but you might be right. Fastest Lap might be updated during Time Trials. I have a memory back in the day, whenever I got a new lowest time in some race I would later go into Time Trial and set an "official" fastest lap in that mode.

This was being shared between multiple memory cards, too.

No idea, it would take a fair amount of reverse-engineering just to find the code and see how patchable it looks.
