Lap Time challenge penalty

When I go past track limits or bump a wall, my lap time for that lap is void (red, dsq, invalid, w/e), and crossing the finish line starts a new valid lap time. However, sometimes finishing with an invalid time, the new lap begins in the red also. I can't tell what determines whether I am penalized for the current lap or current lap and the next lap.

I've tested this and it's not my imagination. Why am I getting a fresh lap voided out?

I assume that it happens if the infraction could give you an unfair advantage at the next lap, i.e. letting you cross the start line at a higher speed than normal. Don't know if it actually checks your speed though or if it just defaults to invalidate the next lap if an infraction occurs close to the end of a lap.

Thanks for the response. You are correct, it happens only in the last section. I tested the speed/advantage and the answer is no, it doesn't check. If I bump the wall and cross the finish at deliberately low speed, it still invalidates the time.
