i know opening a laptop is like pandora's box, but are video card exchages possible?

even if it was professionally done?

Depends on your laptop. After nVidia introduced the MXM standard which is a PCI-X standard for notebooks, replace (by you) graphics in your laptop will be an option.. ATI has something on the way as well which probably won't be interchangeable with the nVidia standard even though the specs are not owned by nVidia and can be used by whoever decides to built a graphics card for laptops...

Guess the answer is no - not even by a professional...

My brother can change his, he even modded his. He has a Dell Inspiron 9100. He's taken everything out and modded all the heatsinks. He is going to replace his 9700pro with a mobility 9800pro.

cool.

yeah i have a compaq r3000 with an athlon 64 and the works...except for this 32mb card. <_<.

i can live with it just fine, but if its upgradable then i wanted to know.

Well, if you must have a laptop, Alienware is developing an upgradeable laptop, with a removable Video Card. It looks much like a slot for a CD drive, but it's your VC. I'd say other than that, you're in trouble trying to upgrade cards. I have a 1-year old Alienware, and I can't even upgrade it. :(
