It's probably happened to you all more than once (and probably a lot bigger too) but about 10-20 minutes ago i just experienced my first Earthquake.

It was quite quiet, except for the humming of the computer and PS2, then suddenly it sounded like a very heavy truck driving past, then someone thumping around the floor, then everything just started moving. (there was a constant low rumble too) The walls, door, computer stuff... and i felt as dizzy as hell. My heart was racing and i came close to either fainting or being sick (because the ground was moving so much).

It lasted for about three minutes and i think i've felt a couple of aftershocks. (or it could just be my head)

My verdict? I do not like Earthquakes now.

And earlier on this morning...

Well it rated 7.1 on the Richter scale and was kinda close:

Aftershocks from a large earthquake that shook the lower South Island early Friday could continue for several days.

The quake struck just before 12.15am and measured 7.1 on the Richter scale. It was centred offshore about 70 kilometres north-west of Te Anau and was 12 kilometres deep.

An aftershock of 6.2 on the Richter scale hit just after 2am and hundreds of smaller aftershocks have hit the lower South Island since.

Dr Warwick Smith, of the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences , says the aftershocks will become more frequent as they get smaller and could be felt for some days.

The series of earthquakes is the largest in the area for decades.

There have been no reports of major damage so far, but shops in Queenstown faced a clean up job after stock was shaken off shelves.

There were power cuts in Tuatapere and Waikaia and the quake set off building alarms in Te Anau, Gore and Invercargill.

Transit New Zealand says crews are out on the roads checking for any damage.

Transit spokesperson Murray Clark says a full inspection of state highways in central Otago has been carried out, and there is no sign of any rockfalls or roading cracks.

But he says slip prone areas such as the Nevis Bluff, between Cromwell and Queenstown will continue to be monitored throughout the day.

The quake was also felt as far away as Sydney, with guests in the upper floors of the Hilton Hotel reporting tremors.

The quake, at 7.1 was one of the largest to hit New Zealand - the earthquake that destroyed much of Napier in 1931 was 7.8, Inangahua in 1968 was also 7.1 and the Edgecumbe quake in 1987 was 6.1

This earthquake was the fifth biggest in the world this year...

7.1, that's a big one. I should know, take a peek where I am from. Been here my entire life, so I know what EQ's are like.

The local triple A baseball team are called the Quakes, and their stadium is called the Epicenter. No joke.:D

I didn't feel it up here in Wellington, I supposed if it was during the day not at nght I may have felt a small shiver but unlikely non the less.

I would have seriously freaked out and jumped around in cirles, much like M5Power does.

Kinda morbid isn't it?

7.1 is pretty big. We had a 6.8 when I was living in Seattle. It was sorta fun. :D That is, until I noticed my friend was crying her eyes out right next to me.

I've never experience an earthquake. I probably never will if I stay in the North East United States.

It isn't an Earthquake unless it registers over 9.0.
