I'm going to attempt the Le Mans 24 hour race soon and I've got the balance right in the dry so that the race is very close.

Problem is if it rains the AI starts pitting for rain tyres even when it seems like you don't need them. I know the RS tyres are the best even on the wettest of tracks but I know that the AI will use the full choice of wet weather tyres so I want to be able to mirror them when they pit.

On my dry run... until it got wet, the AI pitted when the water track percentage got to 25%.

Does anyone know what tyres they would have gone onto although I would assume it was the inters?

And does anyone know what percentage of water the track has to be before they pit for full wets?

Thanks for any answers. :)

When you go to pit the game recommends a set of tires for you that are the same as what AI is using. So if it gives you intermediate as default then that is what AI is using too.

There was no way of knowing water percentage back when I did the 24 Hr races, but it rained most of the time, with ocassional breaks, and this is what worked for me-
if I was currently on racing softs I stayed on them, even if it had been been raining a number of laps, until I noticed tire spray coming of my tires in the rear view, then it was time to change. I generally changed directly to wet tires and skipped the intermediates, but when there was no more tire spray and it seemed that the rain had stopped I would do one stint on the intermediates just to be sure before going back to softs.

OK thanks for that. I guess the best option is to see when they pit and then just go in the next lap if I'm in front or follow them in if they're ahead.

Has anyone else had this happen? Rain is pouring on the track (Le Mans or elsewhere) and yet it doesn't accumulate. As if the rain effect was there visually, but the track stayed dry.

I'm 2 hours 5 minutes into the 24h at Le Mans, it started raining at about a quarter to the 2 hour mark and the water meter is still showing 0%, I've been looking behind my car every other lap and indeed there is no evidence of rooster tails beginning to form, I'm on racing mediums and grip isn't getting any worse. If the weather is going to glitch like that I might just start over, doesn't seem much fun to not have the full weather effect for the remainder of the race.

I never ran either 24 hour races before Spec 2.0 came out so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I have seen this happen twice already though, at Suzuka also.

Edit: After saving on my last pit stop, exiting the game then resuming the problem seems to have straightened out... sort of. At 2 hour 15 minutes I'm now at 1% surface water, about 2 laps later it's at 2%. I'm just wondering if it's working normally, it's been raining with gusto for about 15 minutes (in-race time) and the track doesn't seem to get wet nearly as fast as when I did laps in the rain during practice mode.

Something worth mentioning is that I always chose 'Real' grip reduction in practice mode and it's my understanding that A-Spec races are all set to 'Low' grip reduction. Still, would that factor into how fast the track accumulates water?

I just want to make sure I'm not doing a "broken weather" race so to speak.

No, sometimes the rain is just light and the water doesn't accumulate fast enough to wet the track.

I thought about that, but then looking at how much water was on my windshield as I drove (using a Mazda 787B by the way) not just on the straights where I'm going fast and all, but in slow sections too, it was really coming down for about 15 minutes and the track stayed dry.

After resuming it seems it seems to be ok though, the meter is increasing by 1% every 2 and a half laps or so and there's a little spray behind the cars now, still seems a little disproportionate to the downpour but I'll see how it keeps developing.

Exactly what you said 👍 PD tried to make it realistic as possible so made it so the track gets more and more slippery as it rains.

Do you have to race for a total of 24 hours? as in, even if the AI plays do you have to leave ps3 on for 24 hours?

Essentially no, you just need to come across the finish line after the 24 hours are up. You can use the save feature to save in between stints. Some people bore themselves racing for 18-20 hours or whatever with the X2010, then leave the game sit there until it's time to wrap it up.

I, on the other hand, highly suggest picking an LMP or its equivalent and do the race as it's meant to be done. Watching the taillights of other cars in the distance at night and witnessing the sunrise the next day is really quite something. GT5 in its fullest expression.
