Basically it's a globe (somewhat like the music visualizer, and in a way it is, because you can create music playlists to fit your mood), with Real-time satellite imagery (that means the clouds you see will move depending on data from weather satellites), and weather for any location in the world, as well as news headlines, web browsing, and even runs F@H while everything else is going on.

Edit: Here's another link with a bit more info.

A translation would be cool 👍 (Anyone??!) But I do wish Sony would hurry up with some basics first, before farting about with somewhat less useful things, like real time satellite imagery - great if you are a weather forecaster, but all I want is a decent music player frontend, which the PS3 is currently sadly lacking.

I would like in Game XMB music please, time wasted on this could have gone else where to be honest

As has been discussed over the last few weeks in the Playstation 3 System Update Thread, it appears they have "wasted" time (as you have chosen to put it) doing both, so no need to get upset.

see but time put into this could have gone into in game XMB instead and once that is done (because it more important and what everybody has been asking for , for a while) they can do this weather thing.

You mean to say a huge company with thousands of employees should only do one thing at a time?

Do you even know or understand the process of implementing in-game XMB music? Or what Sony has done already, and when they first started working on it?

Are you aware that Sony gave developers the ability to support in-game custom music quite a while ago?

BTW: Just because you feel in-game custom music is more important, please don't try and suggest your opinion is the exact same as everyone else. I know for a fact that several people, including myself could care less... not that I mind having it as an option, it's just that it would not add any value to my gaming experience.

Besides the fact that if I really wanted to listen to my own music while playing a game, I have a lot of choices, including turning off the official background music in the game settings and playing my music on my stereo or even use my iPod.

If anything, what appears to be the feature that is most wanted right now is in-game XMB access, or more specifically, in-game XMB Friend's Menu access.

The point though is that when you say "everybody has been asking for it" you are in fact not speaking the truth.

In fact, I'm curious if you have even seen a poll on how PS3 owners feel about having in-game custom music? I would not be the least bit surprised to find out less than 20% of the current 13 million or so PS3 owners care about custom in-game background music.

Look, I get it. You feel having custom in-game music is a huge deal, but before you go jumping to some pretty wild conclusions, and pointing the finger of blame and anger, you may want to do a little more research on exactly what is going on and why it took longer than expected.

My main grumble with Sony is that they've been too slow to bring us the goodies, but I always knew that the PS3 would be a slowburner - whether it be availability of decent games, or cutting edge features with the XMB etc. It is still lacking in many respects, esp. as a media player and internet browsing tool - which is what I use my PS3 for the most. The fact that my crusty old Creative Labs mp3 player has a better music file system and playlist controller is embarrassing...

I just don't understand why the PS3 can't have something as simple as Winamp or iTunes compatibility, for example... even my ancient PC (bought in 1998) can still outperform the PS3 (in terms of variety of frontend function), which is something I didn't think I'd still be able to say after more than a year of PS3 system updates...

Nevertheless, I look forward to what the PS3 promises to deliver... but I think PS3 users - especially those of us who bought it at launch, are being kept waiting a bit too long for some of these features, alot of which are surely not too much to ask... at let's not even mention Home :ill:

Sorry if this sounds impolite but which one of you guys was the one who said way back that they loved the Nasa earth satellite image thingy on the PS3 so much that you emailed Sony to ask if they could expand its use or maybe add fly pasts of different planets...

Whoever it was they clearly listened to you! I also loved its visualizations and now that you can do more with it im really pleased!

Robin

That seems pretty cool, any release dates? Is it free?

From what I've seen, it's free, and it seems I saw something that said Summer or September, but I can't find it, although I'm suspecting a ton more information at E3.

Chris.

 It looks too awesome at night! with all the lights and stuff... It would be cool if they made a Google Earth kinda thing, just in real-time...

2 things worry me about this,

1. It might just be a ploy to fill the gap because Home is taking bloody ages...

2. This app itself might be years in coming (you know what they are like)...

I hate waiting for all this stuff which seems clearly complete when they demonstrate it on the screen at events... Home looked finished a year ago and so does this so just release it already!

Robin...

For that thank you! Usually, Google is not large with translation of the web sights, but I really understand many of that, for a modification!

It is still lacking in many respects, esp. as a media player and internet browsing tool - which is what I use my PS3 for the most.

Interesting observation, as I too bought the 60GB PS3 at launch, and primarily use it as a Blu-ray player, DVD player, and use many of it's video and audio codecs to play home movies, watch videos downloaded off the internet, and listen to music from SACDs, CDs, MP3s, and even right off our iPods, and have had little issue with it.

In fact, for the last year the PS3 has been arguably the best performing and full compatible Blu-ray player on the market, despite being half the price of many of the stand alone players.

It took only a few months for Sony to unleash the full scaling capacity of it's video processor, making the PS3 one of the best 1080p upscaling DVD players.

As anyone with a collection of SACD discs will tell you, it also is a great SACD player. Late last year Sony even added the ability to output the signal via TOSLINK.

Simply put, you won't find a single video game console that supports more media formats than the PS3:

Current Compatible Media Formats for the PS3

    • GIF
    • JPEG
    • PNG

(although I wish it would support FLAC, but I also understand why that is very unlikely to happen)

Nevertheless, I look forward to what the PS3 promises to deliver... but I think PS3 users - especially those of us who bought it at launch, are being kept waiting a bit too long for some of these features, a lot of which are surely not too much to ask... at let's not even mention Home :ill:

Again, as someone who has had his PS3 since launch, or more specifically since early December '06, I have not felt as if I've been kept waiting. Nor have I felt that Sony has been slow to add features and updates to the PS3... especially when you consider they have had more than 25 updates already!

I guess it all depends on what you are trying to compare it with though. Looking over all the updates, and how much they have added to the value of the PS3 over the last 18 months (and not just the last few months either), and I think you will have an unbelievably hard time trying to find any other console that has even come remotely close to adding and offering as much versatility and multi media playback support than the PS3.

Sure... if it was a personal computer you could do all sorts of things with it to customize it, add support for specific codecs that you personally want to use, and add software to sort and manage it all... you certainly could have a more feature filled and faster web browser, but then you also have to deal with reliability and having an operating system that crashes on occasions, and worrying about your system getting hacked and infected with viruses.

In fact, if that's what you really want from the PS3, it supports LINUX and there are plenty of sites out there where people are showing off how they have hacked the PS3 and turned it into a personal home super computer.... personally I prefer having something that not only performs at a very high level, but is also very reliable and dependable.

BTW: In case someone is getting ready to blame Sony again for the lack of an update for the Flash plugin for the PS3... as I shared in the main PS3 thread, the problem lies with Adobe. They simply have not written a Flash 9 plugin for the PS3, just as they have not for various other devices other than PCs.

If anything, what appears to be the feature that is most wanted right now is in-game XMB access, or more specifically, in-game XMB Friend's Menu access.

see even though you have actually quoted my post I don't think you have read it well , my 2nd post points to in game XMB as a whole with all the functionality not just the in game music part :)

I like this convergence instead of a bunch of applications all over the XMB. It's something I would show off to my friends. Unlike the Wii's News Channel, which only makes my testicles smaller.

According to some tips at the official PS boards, a FW update is to come out in the next few days containing this, new way for Visualizers to work (Which probably has something to do with this because you can play music in LWPS), and ability to customize clock location and other settings.

Well, for those who own the PS3 you may be interested to know that Sony is coming out with a new firmware, 2.42 or 2.50. Well if the PS3 owners don't know yet why Sony release 2.40 or 2.41, any firmware that has 2.41 is for bugs in the ps3, while the firmware that is 2.40 is for the big updates. At the moment we don't know which firmware Sony's going to release, that's why it's a rumor. According Ninjaraiden89 a member on the official PlayStation Forum, it will be launched on July 31 and will be firmware 2.50.

According Ninjaraiden89 will include the following functions are occupants:

-PLAYSTATION Lifestyle a large globe where you play the weather and news on the whole world can see.
-The way how the visual player is used has changed
-The place and date of the clock in the XMB you can now customize.

Although there are some doubts as to the truthfulness of this rumor, specifically the person calls it "PLAYSTATION Lifestyle" while at every official Sony conference it's called "Life With PLAYSTATION"

The official online manuals also contain a section on "Life With PLAYSTATION" but the link redirects to Folding@Home, which seemingly indicates this replaces F@H in the XMB, which makes sense because whenever you are using LWPS, F@H is also supposed to be running.

Regardless of the truth in this rumor, LWPS is still supposed to release in the next 2-3 days.

Chris.

Yeah they did say the end of the month... the truthfulness of that post on playstation boards seems plausable because maybe thier english aint too good and they just called it playstation lifestyle accidently.

'The way how the visual player is used has changed' - that is also poor gramatical english which makes it seem more truthful.

'The place and date of the clock in the XMB you can now customize' - That would be something believeable because im sure people have been calling for it since the clock launched... I want an anologue clock like the one on the BBC website! :sly:

Well only 2 more days... its not Home but at least its something new!

This looks interesting, but is it basicaly just news and weather?

So far it looks like a much better looking Wii News Channel and Wii Weather Channel. I was expecting something more, but this is cool.

I think I have been crossing my Home desire with this.

Yeah its basically the same as the wii setup but it has real time cloud and weather patterns in 3D over that glorious globe we see in the music visualisations... Its going to be like being on the ISS! :sly:

Is it just me or does the Life with Playstation title make it sound like it should do more?

I can just imagine this coming out and the Interwebs igniting in tons of, "Is this it?" and "Wii did this a year ago" flame threads.

Not complainaing myself, as this looks nice, I just think the title could have been better to not create future confusion. Unless this is just Phase 1 and there is more coming.

I wonder if it can actually give me sever weather alerts for my area. This seems like it is supposed to be more real-time than the Wii (my newspaper is mor ereal-time than the Wii) so I think that having a message pop-up while you are gaming that says something like:

Severe Thundertsorm Warning - Click on Life for more information.

Would be awesome. At a minimum that would make me save at the next available point.

I suppose it does seem to be lacking on the features front but I think certain functionality will be added over time and this is just the start. I agree severe weather warnings would be excellent so that you know to turn off your console if lighting is predicted but unfortunatley I think its going to be a lot more vague that that.

I think over time they want to add information on local events and implement some sort of directory enquiries... I could just see it turning into a yellow pages, google maps, rss feed etc etc suite of functionality. Much like the Live and Google services offered on the web. Google earth for PS3 with Sixaxis support would be really cool!

Im just glad im getting something for the mean time but I do see flaming ahead when people realise its just a weather chart!

So we are out of July days. Any word on when this is hitting or did I just miss it somewhere? It looks interesting but nothing I haven't already seen before. I'll still be curious to dive in a take a look around at it.

Well, we've still got the rest of today, and knowing Sony, if it is to come in a FW update, it'll be at 11:30 EST, still no word on the PS blog (not even answering questions in the comments) about release and quite a few people think Jack Tretton misspoke at E3 and it's really not coming out till the end of the year, which is backed up by "testers" (G.A.P.) who said they heard 2009/2010 originally.
