light braking / acceleration - broken control?

I'm having trouble becoming a "good driver". I don’t' know that it's so much the driving lines I'm taking, but rather it's either all brakes or no brakes, same with acceleration. I find that I either fly off the track going to fast, or slide through the corners because my brakes lock up. Occasionally I'm able to get the half braking through a corner or something, but not usually. Any suggestions?

I noticed this first when playing GT3, and thought maybe it wasn't possible to do, but now with 4, I'm still having the same problem.
 
You don't break through the corner. You break before the corner and accelerate through the apex of the turn.
 
Braking points on a given track vary with every car in the game to some degree or another. The only thing you can do is practice with a given car to determine where that optimal point is. I personally do a little trail braking into corners with much success. Trail braking requires some good fine tuning, which is another whole story.

Dont play so many arcade games where braking is an option *cough NFSU cough*
 
Try driving on the high speed test course in practice and see if you can get the throttle and brake meters to read part throttle/brake inputs. (Press the buttons very lightly and increase pressure slowly.) If it just jumps up to full, or only has a teeny range, your controller is probably worn out. And if you're not using a DS2, get one! Mad Crapz and other knock-off DS2's SUCK! :crazy:

Start with lower power cars first to really get used to the physics. (The Honda S800 racer is good for this.) GT4 is NOT and arcade racing game and will only make you look foolish if you treat it like one. It's a sim. If you wouldn't try it at 70 on the freeway in the car you drive every day, don't expect it to work at the track. :)
 
Here's one to remember -

"Brake on the straight before it's too late..." (Peter Brock)

Brake before you enter the corner, maintain speed to the apex, then apply gradule power and accelerate away.

The best appraoch is "slow in, fast out". This will get you nailed by the AI cars though so you need to be aware they will shunt you out of the corner without warning or provocation.

Once you've mastered these techniques, you can work on trailing the brake into the corner, and even helping turn in with light brake application, but we'll have to save those for another day... :)
 
what you can do is go back to License Test Domastic A and B, press right joystick, you can see the perfect race line flatted on the track. Blue means to accelerate, red means to brake and white means to just cruise. it will helps you alot i think

Make sure you can get at least silver on the Domestic B and Domestic A licenses. The licenses are there to help you learn how to drive and you cannot get gold/silver with bad technique.

Once you have mastered those go and race some then come back and learn advanced techniques in the international licenses.

Remember the bronze does not count - if all you can get is bronze then you cannot drive properly - the bronze times are there so people can easily pass the tests with very little skill.

Remeber to use the demos - after you have completed a few runs, or a run you are happy with, run the demo - your car will appear as a ghost and you can see where you need to make up time (ie improve your technique &/or line). This helped me a lot on A13 and 14.

You posted this while I was writing - I found those racing lines hugely distracting and of no use whatsoever, however I am sure that this is not true for all. The demo with ghost was my most useful guide.

Enter one of the missions where there is a wait time.

Fiddle with the buttons. Press very slowly gradually increasing the pressure. I have heard how many levels there are (256 I think) but I think realistically you can get about 6. But 0, half and full are very useful to learn and they are very possible and necessary if you are to gold the Nissan at Le Sarthe test in one of the later licenses.
 
gah! gumpy got it before me.

if you are using a dual shock 2 controller the buttons are presure sesitive. press down gradually and you will notice next to the tachometer a white line that goes up and down. that shows how much accelerator you are using. try to learn how to use this :)

oh and next to the speedometer is you braking indicator which works the same :)

its what doesnt happen when you crash.

Oh! You mean the rear end of the Mercedes SLR McLaren. The part that totally by accident hits the fence at Bergwerk, Karrussell and opposite pit entrance at Nurburgring in my victorious run at Mission 34.

I don't know what came over me. I went into the corners too fast and sensed an emergency. What do you do in those circumstances - reach for the "emergency" brake. I still thought I could get around the corners so still steered the right way.

Amazingly it was only the back end of the car that hit anything no penalty and nothing braked (If others can spell brake pedal=break pedal then I can do it too).

Accidentally I got around the corners a little quicker than if I had prevented the emergency in the first place.

a) Take your diving boots off before driving with wheels / pedals

b) brake sooner.

the new NSX is absolutely excellent at that.. ^^.. its standard suspension seems to have trail braking in mind..
 
I will also state that I abandoned the buttons about 5% into GT3 and never went back. I've used the two analog sticks ever since.

GT4 is also much more rewarding to drive with a wheel, it has to be said. GT4 is very hard on big control inputs and the wheel/pedals really helps you be smooth.

you abondened the buttons!...tisk tisk..lol.. i also ditched the buttons around the same time as you in the start of the gt3 revolution, mainly because it was alot more difficult to control the cars using the digital buttons. But now with gt4 ive now gone back to the future ..kinda... and i use the anologue steering with the digital go and stop buttons ^^. I find the car a lot easier to control this way, you can much easily balance the car because you can use both accelerate and brake at the same time.. maybe its just me being weird, but i much prefer this.

I suppose that I may have phrased my question incorrectly, although I see that a few people gave me some answers to the question I was trying to ask.

I know how to drive, I race on the weekends (in my car, legal and sanctioned), and I realize this is a sim and not an arcade game.

What I was trying to find out was how to achieve partial braking and acceleration in the game. I'll try the analog stick, I didn't realize that it worked for those functions.

I am too cheap to buy DFP, but with DS2 Controllor, you can place your thumb on both brake and gas.
 
GT4 is not a button mashing game. You have to have a VERY light touch with the buttons to get partial accleration/braking. Difficult to master, but very nice once you get it right.

I am too cheap to buy DFP, but with DS2 Controllor, you can place your thumb on both brake and gas.

I have a mate who does this and I mock him about it all the time. He tries to hide it, but with the throttle and brake application meters on the screen, there's no hiding it.
He think's it the best way to drive, yet I own him every time, so what's that about? :)
