LightScribe?

I was thinking about getting an external DVD drive, so I went to newegg and looked around for a while and saw that some of the drives had "LightScribe" on them. I know what it is, I just want to know if anyone here has had any experience with it. I was looking at this drive in particular:

Not bad for 70 bucks

But I really wanted this:

But its a little out of my price range

suggestions and help?

Lightscribe is a technology which allows you to burn onto the disc an image and text using its lazer, is much like making your own CD labels and how retail discs are made BUT it only does it in grey scale and doesnt use ink... basically it just adds abit of aesthetic appeal but you do have to remember that if you want to use lightscribe alot your going to have to buy special lightscribe disks... but thats only if you want to make labels, you can use normal disks in it aswell. Its quite a neat function which can produce stuff similar to the windows XP disk art.

I personally havent had any experience of using one but I have seen lightscribed disks and its basically a lazer etched in image on the top of the disk...

Heres some more information, it can probably explain it alot better.....

LG drives are really good, ive had alot of experience with them, another brand to check out is Liteon... they are really great for burning drives.

Ok, I just need to know if the lightscribe software is compatible with vista

Does anyone know of any known vista compatible drivers?

In my opinion, lightscribe is really quite pointless. Unless the price is the same as a normal burner, I wouldn't bother. I prefer my labels to be printed off a high quality color printer on the rare occasions that I need them to have a fancy label. Besides that, I hear that getting a quality image off a lightscribe label takes a long time. Technologically, these burners aren't superior to the normal ones, and depending on the situation (the need for ultra fancy error correction) a standard burner may be better for the task.

I've only burned one label, but the image turned out pretty good. It was a backup of Oblivion, which I used a screenshot overlooking the Imperial City (similar image to the intro when the camera is heading towards your cell window). It looks good but next time I need to darken the image a lot.

Ok, so I bought the LG one in the first post. I didnt buy it off newegg, but at (not the)best buy for 96 bucks. Then I bought a 20 pk. of Cd's and a 20 pk. of DVD+R's for a total of about 35 dollars. Not to bad so far. Only one coaster due to user error. To really get the good images onto the discs, it take about 15 minutes. For a semi-decent disc, about 7-10 minutes. And for a quick thing (haven't tried it yet) should take less than 5 minutes. This plus nero premium, well, kicks major arse! Ill be writing a product review in the right section soon.
