Lightweight, Music Playback Driven Linux Distro

So right now I'm taking an old p3 1GHz /384mb/SoundBlaster Live!/GeForce2MX and pretty much letting my friends use it as a music playback system for the parties they seam to have, everyday. Rightnow they are running an old old old windows 98 system and WMP for playback but ever since I've dropped 90% or my 50gig music collection onto it (as they requested) it seams to be too slow for any sort of playback.

So is there any linux distro you guise know of for music playback with a visualizer, that runs pretty well on a 1ghz system? Slackware and xmms looks to be a good choice if not.

Have you tried using foobar2000 on the machine? It should run pretty good on there.

Foobar2000 for windows. Should work, its extremely lightweight, and its fast.

I love it and it is greater than anything ever.

Slackware is not an easy distro to deal with, my friend used it for a while.

I'm just curious as to why it must be a Linux solution? If your friends are using WMP, that already tells me they are going to have issues with Linux.

It the only choice I have right now, Win98 on their PC is loaded with spyware and only 500mhz with 128mb of ram. While I on the other hand, Have a 1ghz 384mb ram, at that the only OS I have that can run on it decently is a linux based one, tried xp on it and it was too slow for basic tasks. But I used linux on the system for a long time as a 12 player cs source server and it ran like a charm.

Edit: Why are you guys so uptight about it being a windows system anyways? I've already stated that Im going to use linux.

No, you asked about a Linux distro. You did not say "I am going to use Linux." You implied you will use Linux if you find an easy to use setup for it.

98 will run fine on an older computer like that. I ran it for ages on a 233 MHz with that much ram (128 megs). I used Winamp 2 or 3 way back in the day.

Clean the spyware out, kill non essential tasks, modify the virtual memory setup, and other tweaks.

Foobar is absurdly lightweight. Version 9.4 or so used about 7 megs of RAM when playing. It is the single lightest weight audio playback program I have ever used. And I have tried a lot. It also supports every single format I have ever jammed into it, from .flac to .ogg, .aac to .wav

I'm not against Linux. But your friends probably have no idea how to work in a non Windows environment.

I'd put Win98 on your machine (use their license after downloading the disc, which isn't illegal) and use Foobar.

They actually do know how to use Linux quite well, and their exact words were "we want computer just for music and nothing else". Windows, even 98, is a bit too bloated for that. Seeing as I have the necessary hardware for this, and I need a reason to get this system out of my house I saw it as a perfect opportunity, to use this box.

Anywayas I've actually already found Mythbuntu, and some other Linux distros now, that are built just for that. I was really hoping you guys could have been more helpful though, instead of going in the opposite direction of what I was asking.
