like a quote button

Not to sound stupid on this, but I have a question about the "like" button.

We all have heard that the "like" button on Facebook is contaminated with malware / spam, sore of a feeding frenzy for scammers who take advantage of the Javascript. Has Facebook cured this or is it still an issue ? I don't know, I don't Facebook and have not seen or heard of an update or fix about this.

If implemented - would it be on a different platform, or something more updated than what Facebook is using ?
The scammers/spammers you're referring to actually abused Facebook's sharing feature, which typically made it appear that you had shared or "liked" some type of salacious content; and when your friends inevitably clicked on it, they were infected as well.

A "Like" system on GTPlanet would not function like this at all, and would be completely separate from Facebook. There would be no security risk.

And this is why we can't have nice things.

If one child spoils it for the rest, daddy takes the toys away. I guess it's too much to expect people to behave themselves on the internet.

Thanks for the positive response Jordan. 👍

Do you/we really need a "like" feature implemented into GTPlanet?

Not really.:(
It can have a devastating effect on how people can build there own egos by there internetty friends boosting what system is set in place, Making them look like they are the best thing since slice bread on GTPlanet?
Simply boosting each others "likes" which shows any other members an untrue perspective of the real person you may be dealing with?

Then you have the negative side of it where someone you may know who is a friendly active person of GTPlanet receiving negativity.
Once again thats some one being punished falsely by others who see fit to vote someone down? (Just for the fact it could have an adverse effect on how others see them when they have been voted down?)

I have witnessed in other forums the vote up, like this and big up the person?
Speaking from my own experience,s it always end in an unfair system open to abuse.

Nothing up with the good old messaging someone in thread saying you like that post.
Anyway thats my rant over with. And thats just my opinion? :D
Bye for now.:)

Just my two cents;

I've seen this feature many times over the course of quite a few message boards (not all of them related to racing.) In every single one, there was at least 10 or more cases of abuse of the system (It was very much like the "Profile Magnet" award for mariokartwii.com - people abused it to no end - or at least tried to.)

If you do implement this feature, I can nearly guarantee that you will have problems with people abusing this. I know that many of the people here are honest, upstanding posters who regularly make quality topics or posts. And then there's the people that appear to think that just having more posts than someone else gives you more power and status (especially in the Marketplace section of the forums.) or the people who are very popular, and they use that popularity to make their... (insert anything here) better at the expense of others.

If you, Jordan, and the dev/mod team decide to implement this feature... can you please have the ability to disable that function? (Especially if it is set to notify your e-mail address that your post has been 'liked'.)

Seconded.

Would like this feature. But maybe a daily / weekly / mothly limit for likes could be good. 👍

I'm on a forum where we only have a "Like button" and an "Unlike button". The function of the latter is pretty self explanatory.

Sure, some posts have a huge amount of likes (over 30), but that's usually the case when it's one of the firsts posts of a heated debate, or when it is usually a very funny one. Other than that, the feature works fine: no e-mail notifications, only profile notifications, such as when someone posts on our profile here at GTPlanet.

The problem with this feature is knowing what are you expecting to get from it. It's true that I don't see "+1" or "^this" posts on that forum, in case you are thinking of using it as a post-moderator feature, expecting people only to "like" posts instead of quoting them pointlessly. However, that depends on the people. Some are not satisfied with just "liking" the post.

Because there is no benefit from having your posts "liked", I see no reason why this feature should be abused.

Sometimes, I just don't post in the Funny Pics Thread because, even though I find the pics funny, I just can't bring myself to post "".

And this is why I should be elected President of the United States of America. God bless you.

I'm on two other forums with a Like button and a Rep system respectively and I don't actually use either since I'm so used to not having one here

Unless people start seeing their like count as a psychological benefit, and posting things that will get them tons of likes rather than things that actually contribute to the topic.

I know on one forum I go to that has it, people are at times complete dicks to each other for no other reason than because making someone look like an idiot with a pithy and/or smartass response gets them a dozen+ likes; which is incidentally about the same they would get if they wrote a detailed response to actually rebut what the other person is saying. It visibly changed the perception of what is a quality post when they went from the old reputation system to a Facebook-esque "like" system, and dilutes the friendliness about the forum in the process. And considering the crap the moderators sometimes get over there, I wouldn't want the GTP moderators to have to go through the same thing.
