Like black cars? You might have to act fast...

I have no A/C in my car. So I have to roll down the windows and let my music play as loud as I can ^^.

When you do that, you let out all the heat that has gathered inside your car from sitting in the sun, which contributes to global warming by letting more heat into the environment.

Great...I should just bike to work and to school in this weather. 👍 Thanks PB

One of the dumbest things I ever heard! The color of the car has zero to do with how hot it becomes inside it. The color and fabric of the interior is however a different matter.
And why, I wonder, does the beduins have black robes? Because black clothes do not reflect the sunshine, and it also provides a better protection from the sun. So if we follow the (stupid) logic of California, a black car gives you better protection from the UV rays! Bollocks!
The paint has nothing whatsoever to do with the usage of AC!

To be honest, that's not strictly true - there's a reason why people buy predominantly white cars in Arabic countries and it's certainly not to do with not having the money to opt for fancier paint shades. White does reflect light and heat much more than black does - and indeed lighter colours versus darker colours in general. You can test this theory by going out on a hot sunny day in a white t-shirt, and then trying the same thing in a black t-shirt. I guarantee that you'll feel hotter in the black t-shirt, as it doesn't have the reflective properties of the white t-shirt.

The beduin's black robes - tradition, perhaps? No different from the black robes and veils worn by Islamic women. You can bet the guys are feeling the heat in their white robes than the women are in their black ones.

There is some basic science behind this, they haven't just made it all up.

However, don't get me wrong - banning black cars is a stupid idea. People tend to use aircon the same way every time - ticking away at a certain temperature to keep the car cool the whole time. People would do this regardless of how hot the car was inside initially - sure, a white car would probably be cooler by a few degrees than it's black equivalent, but someone's still going to get into it and immediately turn on the aircon. So banning black cars on the premise of saving energy makes no sense.

Brilliant idea. They should get everyone to stick a parasol out of their sunroof too. That's gotta shave off a few more grams of carbon, right?

But yeah, I totally agree. The problem's not the Yukons, Suburbans and Hummers driving around the place - it's all those evil, planet hating, black Yarises, Fits and SX4s.

So kids, if you really care about Steve the polar bear, what you need is a nice white Durango. Mmm. Yep. Scientific, that is.

Damn racists.
I'm assuming you're referring to my comment.

It was sarcasm, I hoped the "" would have given that away.

EDIT: From what I heard, people in Dubai and stuff just had white cars simply because they didn't look dirty as much.

SUPER NUMBBER, how is that so, California has the most forclosures of any state and rank second most forclosures per household. Seeing that home forclosures put this country in an economic bind, selling California to Mexico would be in the US best interest. Sorry to rant, back to topic now. I believe banning black cars is just another freedom trying to be stripped from honest taxpayers.

If you go to L.A, there are small pieces of paper that say " Take back L.A from immigrants" They may have to clean that up though.

I was referring to California.. or whoever thought of this

And I live in Walnut btw -______-

damn paranoid GTP members named Perfect Balance...

I'd be willing to bet that a white car with a bloody huge glass roof (Like an Astra or even my car) gets hotter in the sun than a black car with a solid roof. When did people stop just....thinking? It's not hard.

By their logic then cars that are light in color, mostly white, during the winter take the longest to get warm...therefore logically the car has to warm up longer using more heat. Why not ban white cars then by their logic with their 'problem' during the winter?

I think the only one with an actual heater was an old Chrysler that my College Department Head had...it had a seperate Gasoline heater. But, yeah, even aircooled VWs took heat off of some part of the engine. Usually water-cooled cars run coolant through a heater circuit.

It's why most cars start to warm up as the temp gauge rises off of "C."

Some F-series truck has a separate electric heater that works before the engine is warmed up so you don't have to wait.

Maybe California should require everyone to have a white car and a black car, and use each during the other half of the year? And if your car has no AC (and a special sticker or license plate proving that) you could run any color you please?

Do California winters ever get cold enough to allow driving with the AC off? Especially in the LA and San Diego area where I would think this legislation would be targeted at...

It's nice to know that California's politicos go out of its way to make Florida look purty durn smrt.

Then again, it doesn't have a chance in hell of passing; it's obviously discriminatory and promotes segregation.

Tell me about it. Atleast you don't need to get smog test to pass inspection here, heck my car is old enough not to need one :D

In cases like those, the average temperature will be around 40 degrees F. So no, though people do try to stay cool in the winter.

Yes. A friend is in Fullerton and the temps right now are dropping into the 50's at night and low 70's for a high.

Its about 89F high and 49F low in Fresno, though we do get the pollution from both LA and the Bay Area.

The reason why many cars here in Israel (and Israel is just as eastern-desert hot as it's neighbors) are white is for financial reasons: Plain white, sometimes Champagne-gold, is simply the blandest, most inoffensive colour - one that sells well to the masses of leasing customers which are 70% of the market.

With the ambient outside temperatures we have here, even a car parked in the shade gets quite hot (summer temps in the shadow are around 40c), and in the sun, any car gets steaming hot - and colours really don't matter. The interior, which is still almost always black, becomes untouchable - putting on a seatbelt without allowing it to cool off first will leave marks on bare skin.

Black or white makes a huge difference when the timeframe is short - like the bit with the shirt. Leave your car for more than a quarter hour, and the differences will disappear.
