Okay...

I don't know if vB will allow it, but it would be nice if externally hosted images could be resized automatically to fit the pixel size requirements and/or downsized to meet file size requirements.

If it's bandwidth issues/speed issues/etc, I understand completely.

Great idea. 👍

If the resizing makes the image look awful like you resized it in paint, it might be better to use Photoshop and host the file yourself via photobucket or imageshack.

Still a great idea though. 👍

If you just Google “resize image”, you’ll find a gazillion online tools to do that. And if you need something more precise, there’s the free Photoshop Express.

That's the thing...

Resizing would be a moot point as the forum autoresizes uploaded photos. ;)

I know that on my SMF forum, there's an option to "resize using Java" and to have the "URL handle resizing". And that allows a "randomized" avatar to be used (IE it changes on each refresh).

I guess if it could be done practically, it would be done already, eh?

After reading through this thread I'm feeling a bit confused. The software already attempts to re-size avatars upon upload, along with any images that are attached to a post. If you're referring to "hotlinked" images from other sites (which I presume you are), that is another story (which has actually been brought up several times before). However, I've never really considered it to be that big of an issue and prefer to leave the images untouched.

No, I'm talking about the option to link to an avatar hosted on another site.

For whatever reason, it will kick back if the remote image is larger than 100x100 or 120x120 as opposed to finding a way to resize it.

But yeah, no biggie. I assume it's at the root of vB.

Why don't you resize the image from that site using giftools, save to PC, then upload it here?? Took me about 2 minutes today with my new avatar and you can keep the image for other sites rather than the link.

The thing that really takes time is just finding that right image. :sly:

No, I want to use an image randomizer which changes your avy every refresh.

Otherwise I'd be happy with my current avy.

Oh, my apologies RJ, now I understand what you are talking about. However, I'm afraid this idea cannot be implemented. From a technical standpoint, it would require GTPlanet to send a request to your image host, wait for the response, and then perform the necessary computations and checks on every single page that your avatar was loaded. Obviously, this is not a practical implementation.
