What is an SVG?

First, let's start with the basics.

300px-Bitmap_VS_SVG.svg.png

What are the differences between Raster (for example BMP, Bitmap data) and Vector(SVG)?

The BMP format generates an image using groups of dots. If this type of data is enlarged, the small dots will start to be stretched, making edges of curves jagged or blurred.

On the other hand, the SVG format converts images to numbers when storing them. The advantage of vector data is that even if an image is enlarged, the image quality will not deteriorate, and the data size will not increase either.

The diagram below shows a comparison of an enlarged BMP file (left) and a SVG file (right). On the SVG file, the sharpness of the edges is maintained.

But remember guys and girls! We have a size limit of 15KB!

The data size of a SVG file depends on how the image is created, even if the end results may look identical. If an SVG file size is too large and the image cannot be uploaded, you can reduce its size by editing the anchor points and path data of the SVG image. Specialised optimisation software for SVG files can also be effective in these instances. If you use Illustrator you could try to click Object > Path > Simplify. If that doesn't work to well, try this online optimizer to get the size down!

Let’s take a look at a comparison of two SVG files generating the same image.

On the left there's an SVG file that was generated automatically using a non-structured Bitmap image (a collection of dots) as a base, using the auto trace feature of an editing software: unnecessary anchor points can be clearly seen, and they are not accurate either. As a consequence, the file size becomes large.

On the right there's an industry standard SVG file created by manually editing vector data of a Bézier curve: it consists of the least number of anchor points, and each applied with high accuracy. Because of this, its file size is also small.

Company Logos

If you are trying to find a company logo, the obvious place to look is the website of the company. Sometimes you will find that the logo at the top of the page may already be an SVG, and can just be saved and used.

Company logos on Wikipedia are quite often SVGs too.

Other site to use are Brands of the world, WorldVectorLogo. The images here will be vector images, but may not always be SVGs.

WIPO Global Brand Database are not SVGs, and are usually quite lo-res, but this is a useful site to find images of older logos.

I can't find my image/logo there. What do I do now?

Find the largest, clearest image of the logo itself and attach it to this thread. The image should be of the actual logo and be square on if possible.

No one has made my logo. Help!

Making an SVG from a bitmap (JPG, PNG etc) is not just as simple as JPG > Save as > SVG. This does not work. Many programs will allow you to that, but all it does is put the JPG inside the SVG file. This will result in a file that is too large, and will be blank in GT anyway.

Also bear in mind how SVGs work and try to not ask for detailed photos/anime etc, as these probably won't get done as they take too much time to "convert" and some images are just impossible to do due to the 15kb size limit. You may be lucky at get someone who is willing to put in the time (many hours in some cases) and end up with an SVG that is split into more than one file.

Some logos may just not get done. Repeatedly asking will not help.

GT Sport had a 15Kb size limit for stickers.

But in GT7, is somebody can confirm the size limitation is 15Kb?

Raikkonen_WC
Hi, when making logo's for GT Sport, I used a site called DVG Editor alot, just to get the image cropped enough to get it under the 15kb. Sadly, the site is down. Andy tips for a new easy SVG resizing website?
Same to me, last year the site I used was down.
I found a relative good one to resize some decals (vecta.io). In practice, I prefer to resize myself decals. Usually, some decals are over 15Kb, and it just needs to delete some vectorial points.

Hello all!

I am asking here but when will the decal page for GT7 go live, I can only find the option to upload through Sport at the moment...

Will have some requests in due course for the thread, I have a few ideas this time!

Hey guys,just a quick question.

Can we upload max 100 ?

That would be a bummer :(

Hi everyone! I finally got to the part in GT7 where I can do liveries....I've found that not all of my liveries and/or decals have been ported over. Some were my fault, I forgot to share them before Feb.15th. Anyways I have a few requests on some things I'm working on in GT7.

Would one of of you far more talented than I folks be able to do these?
I would greatly appreciate it!

Also, is it better to have these in .jpg or .png format? I have these in both.

Another also, I would need clear backgrounds on all of them. Thanks again!

@ROLOY I don't know if you need the stripes transparent or white, so you get both

What you've done is awesome! Thank you soo much!

That last undone one...I know it's not the greatest quality, but the only other one I could find like it was on the bottom of a poster, with a bunch of background stuff that would need to be removed to make it look right.

Is that even possible?
