The other day I bought a brand new playstation 2 (the small one). When I tried my Gt4 game my playstation 2 didn' t wanna read it. Then I looked at the cd and the cd was ok, there were no scrach . What's the problem? The playstation is ok and the cd is ok, so what's going on...

GT4, since it is crammed so full of data, is very very prone to Disk Read Errors (DREs). For some reason, the skinny PS2s have more trouble than the older ones. If the machine is new and not having any trouble with other games, it could be some very small scratches on your GT4 disk.

It might be the distance between the laser and the disc. If it is, I could tell you exactly how to fix it if that's the problem if it was the fatter PS2. I never took the skinny PS2 apart though. If your up to it and you find a guide on the internet, it might help.

Although you said that there were no scratches, did you buy GT4 used? If thats the case it could be what Duke said or it could of been scratched then repaired using a disc cleaner/disc doctor. I had my GT4 brand new and it didnt work on my fat PS2 (although i did have it from 2000 to early 2006) but it did work on my slimline PS2.So either its bad luck or your disc is faulty.

This is weird, yesterday I have exchange my new playstation 2 (the small black one) to a silver small playstation 2.My gt4 game is now working. I was just wondering, is it that the silver version is better than the black version?

Just to tell you, yes there is a silver version.:)

this IS odd, though it's most likely to be your ps2. Previous Slimlines ( now is the ONLY existing PS2 on the market), have been quite a hassle, because they are so thin and cannot support a cooling fan, they have a tendency to overheat, hence reading discs doesn't function. NOW, that the Silver Slimline exists, it is an improved model of the previous, and has a MUCH less tendency to overheat.

Edit: It's DVD Discs, not CDs..

I have still never heard of any slimline PS2 overheating, and Famine will likely testify at this point that it can run for a week without a break.

My GT4 disc has never encountered any problems whatsoever, nor has my PS2 (which is about four years old now, and the original design). But this doesn't sound like a DRE as Duke describes - aren't DREs usually behind the red spinning dial on GT4 loading screens, rather than the PS2 refusing to recognise the disc at all?

I think this is more a problem with the disc itself than the PS2, perhaps an invisible flaw or crack in the surface of the disc that is making it unrecognisable. However, if you have access to any other PS2, testing your disc on that would go some way towards finding the problem.

I've been leaving my black slimline PS2 on for weeks at a stretch with no real problem. Every couple months it gets a few DRE's or fails to boot GT4, I just clean the laser with 91% isopropyl alcohol and it's fine again.

Well to tell you it's not that great cleaning the laser with alcohol:) , take an example on me, my fat PS2 actually started to do the DRE and I started cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol.Sure the game was working great but after some time the laser could not read a single game because of the alcohol, this is why my fat PS2 is'nt working anymore. All I can tell you is to take an alcohol bot less % if you know what I meen.:sly:

Make sure you use a clean soft lint free cloth with just a drop or two on the cloth. Don't use a tissue or paper towel, they're too abrasive. Cotton swabs can leave fibers behind. Personally I'd prefer to use a solvent with something with 9% water in it than 30% water.

They do have a fan on the slimline it cuts in when the console gets hot and they don't overheat easily mine has been on 3 or 4 days straight no problems in summer.:sly:

I had a DRE GT4 problem before and bought a new GT4 disc and it still wouldnt read on my fatty PS2. All I had to do was re-adjust the laser and polish it with some rubbing alchohol and it read again.

Although I have only used rubbing alchohol once, and not had the same problem as Fireblast

So if the CD is not scratched than you should try that
