A couple of days ago I tried to log unto my account on Windows XP Pro and it took about 5 minutes. I have no clue why this is happening and I want to fix it ASAP. Before it only took maybe 3 seconds from typing my password to being in my account.

Has anybody had this happen to them? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

You don't have any viruses? adware? Of the like? Do a scan if you suspect that. Even if you don't, do it anyway.

I have the same problem as you. I have Win 2000, and it is slows down badly. On startup.

Although, their arent any viruses or adware on mine. I was thinking about buying another stick of memory...But I don't think that was going to solve the problem.

i doubt this is a ram problem...it might be a virus but it sounds like XP is searching different network locations for remote connections....try to get rid of that..

my computer slowed down a TON becasue all the programs you "uninstall" are still in the damn registry as start up files. buying memeory will help but it better to just go clean out your startup files by going to the start menu, then run, then type msconfig.exe

that helped out a bunch with my PC :)

yea, I would be very surprised if this was a ram problem since the computer was working perfectly two days ago. I haven't done anything big to it, except defragmentation, but nothing happend right after I did it.

How do I make it stop searching?
Thanks,

I'd recommend a full reformat of your HD and reinstall everything. My system was incredibly slow like you say yours is now and it sped up tremedously. Defragging also helps.

If you have a recovery disc that came with your computer, then use it. I was up and running in under 6 hours using a recovery disc(I had to reinstall everything).

Also, be sure you back all your files up to another drive if you want to keep them!

I would have done that...backing up...the problem is that I have well over 150GB of stuff and I dont have enought money to get another drive for a while!

Thanks for the suggestion though,

My systems isnt slow...
its just my logging in time. Everything else is running at the same speed as it used to. That is why I am wondering whether or not something got enabled and if it is something I can turn off.

Ive recently had probs with a slow pc - which included slow logging in time. I D/L adaware and it seems to have blocked out pop-ups which slowed it down, I also defragged but havent tried whats mentioned above so I'll give it a crack tonight.

You have too many programs running at startup. Go to Start > Run > type in msconfig > Startup.

I've always wondered why when I type "msconfig" or "msconfig.exe" I get an error message saying it can't find it.

Why might this be?

This is what it looks like with the start up items when you type in msconfig, then click Selective Startup and uncheck Startup Items like this and that'll speed it up much quicker.

I, would also like to know this, as I am running Win 2000.

It turns out 2000 doesn't have msconfig built in, but if you download the XP version(which can be found here) you can use it. Once the download is complete, just double click the .exe.
