Omg OMSI!! XD That is so damn classy =P

Sounds to me like you havent driven in real life.

Everybody else has been rather polite, congratulations on being the odd one out.

I have driven in real life, your failure to understand my point is astounding.

The wheel in my race car is smaller than the DFGT/G27 wheel.

Not sure what you're getting at?

If you learn how to countersteer with your DFGT, it will definitely help prepare you to countersteer IRL. IRL is much easier to countersteer, but has a much higher penalty for making a mistake.

Really? I've never come across such a small wheel personally and I'm finding it difficult to adjust to. But this is becoming more apparent that it's a me problem and nobody has any solution other than getting used to it.

I can countersteer IRL just fine, I'm finding it difficult in the game which is what I was getting at.
I just wanted to practice driving my MR2 in the game as I've never driven an MR car past road speeds IRL so I'd like to get some practice in before hitting it for real, but as of yet the difference feels so vast it's just not going to help me as far as I can make out

If I remember correctly the 2004 Honda civic hatchback's steering wheel was the same size or smaller (pretty sure it was smaller) as my DFGT steering wheel

Wow O_O
My wheel is easily half the diameter (or there abouts) of every car I've ever owned.

Then again I've had Holdens which have notoriously large steering wheels but even the MR2 and Celica has a much bigger wheel

I'm so confused! XD

You have to realize that you're pushing the cars in the game much harder than real life! Its hard to compare the two unless you have track experience IRL.

Bottom line is practice, this is motor sports not your average video game!

Thanks Blunt, that seems to be the general consensus so I must just be a big girl complaining over little things, the difference between positions on the wheel compared to a real one is just so drastically different but I'm sure I'll adjust in time.

The first attempt was merely an exercise in frustration and patience so it put me off.

Incidentally I try to push the cars about as far as I would IRL, IE keeping a decent margin of safety through every corner so I can recover if I make mistakes. Works well for online since you can't exactly restart the race ;)

Also - Though I don't have track experience I do have rally experience, but in very different cars. This is my first time with a MR car so I'm being extra careful because I know what I'm like and I'll try drive it like a FR car since it's second nature and end up in the sandpit or worse.

I wouldn't call it being a "big girl complaining", rather a frustrated player ;). Trust me, it sucks for everyone (I mean everyone!) in the beginning, it takes time to adjust to make it feel "right"!

I've had a DFGT for a while now and I know exactly what you mean. I've just about given up trying to drift with it and if I want to drift I go back to an old "toy" wheel with about 270 degrees rotation. You don't make it clear whether you want to practice for racing or drifting IRL. If it's drifting then all I can say is keep practicing and make sure your wheel is on a really sturdy stand. If it's for racing then you really shouldn't be getting into situations that require that amount of countersteer. It may be fun and spectacular but drifting is very rarely the quickest way round a corner. Keep it smooth and clean on GT5 and do the same IRL. I hate to think of you putting your real MR2 into a wall.

First off - I'd like to thank everyone for their advice, I've stuck at it constantly for a few days now and I'm really getting the hang of it quite quickly. Turning the FFB down from 10 to 5 made it more manageable as I adjusted to the wheel radius, I'm far from mastering it but I'm learning how to apply what I'm achieving in the game to my real driving. I can't thank you all enough

I'm practicing to drift in the safe environment of GT5 because frankly I can't afford to hire skid pads and I don't care to wreck someones parking lot to practice maintaining a slide when traction is lost.

The purpose of the exercise is due to the twisty nature of NZ back roads and their tendency to be coated in loose gravel, I need to know how to control a MR car in a slide. So while my objective is to drive with a mixture of drift and grip (dependent on what is the fastest solution in a given corner) I need to master sliding the car safely before going full out in an unfamiliar layout IRL.

I'm aware GT5 isn't a substitute for real practice but it's better than nothing

... no comment.
:grumpy:

Did I do something to offend you? or do you just dislike MR2s?:nervous:

Glad to know that it's possible to drift with a DFGT, I was thinking it wasn't happening when I first tried a few weeks. I shall certainly spend more time practicing with it because I see it as a lot of fun, or it would be if I could do it consistently, lol, because when I did get a slide and I could hold it I had a massive grin on my face because it felt awesome, driving in GT5 doesn't usually do that for me.

So I just thought I'd say well done for persevering, it's given me an incentive to try a bit harder as well. 👍

Hey husky. Just letting you know i will be online most likely within the next week or two. Still moving here. Got to drive another 12 hours here in about a hour or so.

Glad to hear you are getting the hand of it. 5 FFB level is great that's what I use.

Keep it up just be patient

I'm just glad something good came of my little cry :)

It took some serious patience, sitting there spinning around several times for the first few hours really took it out of me. But I took a break, came back to it with a fresh mindset and.. I don't know what it was but I suddenly started getting it.

Once you figure out where on the radius you need to be it gets a lot easier, then you start feeling what the backs doing and anticipating your next move rather than reacting.. it's odd to explain but once I started getting the rhythm of the car and when I needed to begin countersteering to catch it in time it just fell into place.

Long story short - I've never felt more satisfaction than when I finally cracked through that wall and started actually getting it :)

I'm glad to hear, that you're getting better, Urie! Just keep praticing!

Thanks! *obligatory first gen pokemon theme plays*

No, YOU did nothing at all! I didn't like the previous post about putting your MR2 into a wall. Seemed a little contemptuous to me.

Ooh I see now, I was rather confused and thought you might of had a prejudice against MR2, text can be confusing like that at times

Awesome! I'm really looking forward to driving with you, I hope I'll be able to keep up with you. Watching your videos really helped me get the basics down and motivated me. I couldn't of done it without you

Without all of you. I really can't thank you all enough, this is the best community I've ever had the absolute honour of being apart of :)

No problem just glad to help. Glad that the videos I have made actually help you. I am probably going to be struggling here after Christmas too... I am upgrading from the DFGT to a G27. So i will probably be a noob again hahaha

I was looking at getting one of those, but I decided on the cheaper wheel incase I found it un-usable. It seemed wise at the time but now I sort of wish I went in at the deep end. Although people were complaining about how unrealistic the clutch system was with it so I got put off.

It certainly wasn't meant to be contemptuous, more concerned. Now UrieHusky has explained the kind of roads he's practicing for I can see the problem. I had visions of an MR2 hurtling round a tarmac track with the tail hanging out on all the corners.

Yeah the clutch is ifffy. But the thing that bothers me is not having a clutch. The G27 i can actually engine brake and even turn the cars off. Little things like that really matter to me. Like i told my homies over at RedSuns my new look when I get done drifting for a minute I will cut my car off then cut wheels (hahhahaha boss status haha)

You can actually stall a car in GT5:crazy:? If so I need to upgrade my wheel(DFGT)

Yep the car will be completely turned off from dumping the clutch 0RPM. Then to start it back up push the clutch in and press the gas down.

So you can shift lock using the G27..?

Damn.. I really should of got one and ignored the people complaining..

Shift lock? Sorry I don't know that term. You mean like shift down say from 6th to 1st and the RPMs go sky high then the engine slows the car drastically down? If so yes. The G25 & G27 & Thrustmaster & Fanatic wheels allow you to engine brake (which I was describing above) and dump the clutch like in a real car resulting in it actually turning off.

The DFGT and controllers ect. If you shift down the RPMs just bob while the car coasts till you get to the top speed of the gear you shift down into

Yeah i am pretty sure you can. Basically he was doing a engine brake to slow the car down and turned it into a drift. To make sure I will ask my buddy later about it. I don't have a G27 yet. I know a lot about them and used them before but not that experienced in using it. But i will ask him in the morning I am about to pass out. I just got done driving 12 hours straight. So i am tired. And I'll ask him after i get some stuff moved in the house.

Heh, the joy and the curse of road trips. Awesome fun but damn exhausting.

There's no rush I'm not about to go and buy it tomorrow upon learning how advanced the clutch system is in GT5. I was just interested because it's a point I really need to work on, my clutch work in real life is.. less than perfect I'm embarrassed to say. But I'm getting there

My buddy "disassembled'' his Driving Force Pro to fix something to his break pedal and conveniently found out that he could not put it back together. So he found an excellent excuse to buy a G27 and in doing so he gave me a chance to compare it with my DFGT.
Sooo, the CLUTCH pedal. Actually I found it totally impractical to use since it really works as an on-off switch. If you make the mistake and touch it slightly, which is easy to do, the gearbox reverts to neutral and you have to depress it again, select gear and resume.
The one thing I am sure of, I (personally) will never be faster by using the clutch. I do not know if it has any practical use when one drifts but since I have not mastered the art of steering yet I didn't even try to use the left pedal.:sly:

After the latest update to the G27, people have been outright saying it's no longer competitive and it's simply not as fast as not having to worry about it.

But I think the value comes from the 'authenticity' (or as near as it can get) that it offers (I'd assume when you use the flaps you don't need to worry about the clutch like in a ferrari? guess work on my part *shrugs*)

It's something you need to worry about IRL so I can imagine it being helpful to practice it at speed, even with my DFGT I take my foot off the accelerator and simulate putting an imaginary clutch in simply because it's what I'm used to IRL and it seems to help me feel more at home. So the upgrade may be worth it after all.

I'm sure I can flog a near new DFGT for a decent ish amount.. at least I hope XD

Correct! I am copying from a friend who uses a Fanatec GT3.

"You should know however that the clutch system in GT5 is nor progressive like in real cars but more an ON-OFF system. In addition you have to time shifting with accelerating (you have to release fully the accelerator before shifting) otherwise neutral kicks in and if you get that in a pressing situation go figure.
Then again if you like the idea so much and you intend to invest a lot and a lot of time to get used to the clutch then it is definitely worth it since besides the realistic feel you get, expert drivers achieve somewhat faster times (a thing that will not be accomplished by me I am afraid)"

Yeah the linear on off system was what I had heard of it and how I understood it, that's why I never bought it in the first place because it seemed so off putting.

But frankly I'm already depressing my clutch fully so it shouldn't be too difficult to adjust to, it's a shame you can't do more advanced clutch work with it though :(

My thanks to both of you for the information :)

EDIT: Plus it means I can have the gear stick on the left =P Which is always nice
