Alright, so I'm looking for a new MP3 player, since my last 2 got stolen. I'm looking for something in the price range of under $200. Cheaper is better. I'm not a person who buys into names, so if there is a 40GB Generic MP3 Player for $140, and an Apple iPod 5GB for $250, check please.

Currently, I'm looking at this:

INOi MP-180 20GB MP3 Player (External HDD Compatible) -- $170 ($140 after rebate).

I probably won't be purchasing in time to get the rebate, so ignore that if you wish.

Also, I'm looking at a pair of Sennheiser CX300 Ear-Canal Headphones.

Keep in mind that I won't spend over $50 on headphones. I want a pair of good-brand headphones that will deliver great quality. Changeable ear adapters are a big plus.

Any suggestions? Comments?

iRiver H120/H320 20GB players that can be picked up cheap nowadays. Very good SQ, and it has ROCKbox. I have a H320, hasn't missed a beat in over a year. Here's some more info, taken from another thread, so it won't make much sense in terms of continuity:

If I were in the market for one, these would be my picks:
1) iPod 5G 30GB + ROCKbox
2) Creative Zen Vision:M
3) Cowon iAudio X5L (getting old now though) + ROCKbox

Throw in a pair of decent headphones and you're set.

iRiver have been coming out with crap recently, so they're the only other choices I would seriously consider. But wait 'til Christmas there may be some new players coming out.

EDIT: If you don't mind an older player, check out the iRiver H100 and H300 series, which are iRiver's sadly discontinued audiophile players. The H100 has optical out, and line out while the H300 has line out and a colour screen. Both can be picked up at around £130 on eBay. I myself have a H300, and it's build quality is second to none, one has even been run over by a bus and it still survived. The H100 is probably more durable with it's metal housing. Both are ROCKbox compatible.

If you're wondering what ROCKbox is, check out this:

Yes, I use it on my iRiver, massive improvement in battery life (I used to get like 8 hours previously) I have done a battery test recently here:

While I can't fully comment on the iPod, the user interface is mostly the same in terms of functionality, with the added plus of being able to make your own themes. Battery life is about 11hrs, since ROCKbox hasn't been fully optimised for iPods yet. But IMO, it's still worth it for the extra features such as:
- Gapless playback (listening to Pink Floyd and live albums is pure bliss!)
- Wider format support: FLAC, OGG, WAV. I could go on, but I've forgotten :p
- Lots of games. Doom, Pacman, and a Gameboy emulator
- Replaygain support
- UMS capability, this is a big reason for me, you can totally bypass iTunes and organise your music your own way. The player will just show up as a HDD so you can organise folders in a file tree format and you can put anything else on it. I've once installed Photoshop on my iRiver so I can plug it into any PC and work on my magazine design.

Extra views on ROCKbox + iPod are here:

It's also open-source, so it's constantly improving.

Just replace "iPod" with iRiver H100/300 or X5L

Well. I think I have betrayed myself.

Considering I won't be paying for it (Christmas present ftw), I am looking at a 30GB iPod video. I can get This one for $294.99 brand new. I can get a refurb'd iPod video 30GB for around $249.99 or so. I don't really like refurbs, so I'm probably going to go with the brand new iPod video and save up for some Sennheiser's later.

I've been a fan of the iRiver Clix myself, but I don't own one (still have that 4GB iPod Mini). From what I understand, the 2GB iRiver S10 is supposed to be a pretty good option to the iPod shuffle, but the iRiver will be a bit more like it's bigger brother, the Clix. Unfortunately, I have no idea when it is supposed to be out.

The iPod is always a safe bet in most circumstances, as I would go for the cheaper Nano models myself. I'm not into the whole video thing, particularly when the iPod really only supports it's own stuff... So I'd be more apt to go for an iRiver or SanDisk model that is a bit more "open" to other formats with music, photos, video, etc.

The new Shuffle is outrageously small! You don't really have to worry as much about having it stolen as you do losing it!

iThink that the whole video thing could be useful on very long trips. iTend to get quite bored from just listening to music (even if iHave over 20,000 songs at my disposal). Plus, the extra features, games, and the overall awesomeness increases the coolness factor, which is great for impressing people .

iCan't wait until Christmas :)

It makes you think how small these things will be 10 years from now. I wouldn't be surprised if you could implant them by then.

i got an 128mb mp3 player for $30AU:)

128mb is good enough for me:)

it has voice record, FM radio and stuff like that:)

are you talking US or AU

:).

No more suggestions. It's final that the 80GB iPod is going to be mine :D.

Overkill? Not really. Considering I'll bne buying about 3-4 iPod games for it, a few videos, and a load of music and maybe some pictures :).

Then you can fill the next 50GB with pr0n.

Yes. It's like the adverts, all silhouette!

I don't know how large the games are, but unless the videos are movies, and you have 15,000 songs, it's overkill. I'd say, at most, you'd use about 30 GB of space. I could be wrong though.

do you really have 80GB worth of video and songs?

that would fill my entire74GB HDD:eek:

OMG REPORT!

just kidding .

Yeah, I don't have 80GB worth of anything to put on it, but hey, I'm not paying for it, so I might as well go all out, right?

True. But I'd rather get the 30GB iPod and $100 in cash. I don't know if your parents would do that though.

Naw. Usually if I ask for cash, I only get $50 or so. If I ask for a $350 present, I usually get it. They have odd ways of working.

*bump*

Can anyone tell me if the iPod comes WITH the dock? Apple sells a universal dock seperately from the iPod on their site, and then they sell "Dock Adapters" seperately, and one comes with the iPod. Can anyone verify if I need to buy the dock seperately?

It doesn't come with the dock, but you don't need it. It's for looks, unless there's some unknown purpose to it. The connector cord works good for connecting your iPod to the computer.

EDIT: The only real feature it adds is that it makes the iPod controllable with the Apple Remote so you can change music with the remote. But it's not worth the money IMO.

Well the dock has a number of features in addition to the aforementioned remote connection. You can charge your iPod from an AC source instead of the computer, you can connect the dock to your stereo and play your iPod through it, or connect the dock to your tv to view the photos, but if you just want to connect the iPod to your pc and upload music than the normal USB cable is good enough.

I think the dock is about $40 or so.

$39 :).

So, is that the only way to charge through an AC power source, or is there an alternative?

Edit: Found this.

That lightens about $20 off of the total load (I was going for a Dock ($39.00) AND a car charger ($19.95), but now I pretty much have everything I need).
