New 2 door suv. That's something hard to come by. I don't think those FJ Toyota trucks are anything great. To me it seemed not that much larger inside than a Scion.

If you want a reliable 2 door suv and that's that. Look into the 2 door Chevrolet Tahoe. 2 Door XJ Jeep Cherokees. Why not get a full size pickup truck and get the best of both with an extended cab?

Tahoe ('97) Really nice truck, hold it's value well, reliable as well.

Two door XJ Jeep Cherokee- Built up to 2001(?) Straight six is just about bullet proof, 4 wheel drive is overly capable, smaller but still seats 5.

Or just go for a full size extended cab truck.

05+ F150 FX4- Nice truck, can be bought new nicely equipped in your 30K range. You can even get the new SVT Raptor F150 supposedly under 30k.

03+ Silverado/Sierra. DON'T get the cloth interior, other than that I've got nothing to really say bad about these trucks. Can be had for under 15,000 in TOP trim (Used obviously). Even an AWD Silverado SS extended cab can be had under 30K.

Hope that helps, I know you didn't say you were looking for trucks, it's not far off a 2 door suv. I say that because aside from the Tahoe, there aren't really many with much room.

Why on earth would you ever consider an SUV for "mostly highway driving"? Terrible idea.

Agreed, Keef. I can understand the "comfort," especially if there is a need to tow or haul anything, but its otherwise ridiculous when there are much better alternatives available for much, much less.

I don't think anyone makes a two-door anything these days that is remotely capable of towing or hauling much. Sure, there is the Toyota FJ, but you may as well buy the 4Runner its based off of to increase the practicality and save some cash in the long run. Part of the problem is that, in the SUV market, there hasn't been much investment from the automakers lately. Toyota has a new 4Runner showing up later this year, but that's about it. We haven't seen anything totally new since 2007 that fits into the aforementioned price range.

I'd personally go with a softer crossover or some kind of tall-wagon. Things like the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox wins on fuel economy (32 MPG Highway!) and build quality, while something like a 2010 Ford Flex EcoBoost brings the turbo powah (!) to get the extra work done. Being more personally inclined to performance with a focus on fun-to-drive factors, the VW Tiguan and a used BMW X3 should make the list.

Yeah, apparently they aren't massive inside, but I suspect they're more than big enough for four people and a fair bit of luggage.

To be strictly accurate the FJ is based off Toyota's Land Cruiser Prado platform. You get the LC/Prado in the States as the Lexus GX, but the GX doesn't come with the 4.0 V6 that's used in the Prado and the FJ. The 4-Runner is also based on the Prado though, so I guess I'll let you off ;) Prado begat 4-Runner and FJ rather than any other way round :p

Great car though, built like a brick out-house. Not sure the "new" 4Runner will be significantly different given that we've just received an updated version of the Landcruiser that's essentially just a facelift. They've not changed the platform so it's basically the same car.

Incidentally, the Prado is available as a two (well, three) door in some markets:

Mmm, I'm surprised nobody's cow-tipped one yet.

Don't forget the similarly disproportionate SWB Shogun:

I was in a car park the other day and saw one of those heading straight at me. I felt fairly intimidated, until it turned 45 degrees and I realised it was the pint size version.

I've always wanted one of those. My dad once owned a Dodge Raider, which was essentially the same thing. He loved it.

Short wheelbase = even more awesome off-road. The first car I saw dune-bashing when I was in Dubai for the second time was a SWB Prado. Whether V6 or V8 they shift like crazy through the sand, and they've got great approach/departure/ramp angles.

Here's the one I drove when I was out there:

I know I like my small, basic cars but there's quite an appeal to driving a large, 4.0 V6, automatic, air-conditioned SUV around for ten days... most relaxing thing I've ever driven. Incidentally, I'd recommend a Land Cruiser to anyone. It's not for no reason that a huge proportion of the SUVs out in the Gulf are Toyotas of some description.

No mentions of the Suzuki X90?

Being that the 4Runner existed long before the Prado, i'd say bollocks to your assertion. You would be correct in saying "in this iteration, the Prado came first." It certainly didn't "beget." It is definitely the other way; if there had been no 4Runner, there would be no Prado.

You do realise the Prado (or "Land Cruiser") line has been around since 1951, right? And the 4Runner since the 80s? The current 4Runner is based on the Land Cruiser, as is the FJ.

So yes, the Land Cruiser/Prado came first

YOU also do realise that at some point the Landcruiser line split and that the Prado is just one branch?

This is a current Landcruiser.

So is this.

Lo and behold, so is this

The branch of the Land Cruiser that the Prado is derived from is the 70 series, which came out in 1984, same year as the 4Runner. However, it wasn't known as the Prado until 1990, 6 years after the 4Runner came out
