Looking for a Blog type interface....suggestions?

Greetings,

I thought I would help a friend out and setup a little site for them but started running into some issues. They want to be able to update their site without using a WYSIWYG editor like Dreamweaver or other remote software solutions. There will be some static content but I was hoping for an "administrative" type of area where certain elements of the site could be updated via a web based interface.

I can support Apache, PHP, MySQL. Any thoughts, idea's appreciated.

BTW, custom PHP scripts are out of the questions, just not enough time in life to learn that stuff (I've tried and failed miserably).
 
I can't think of anything other than using ftp to retrieve the page for editing (in notepad or other program), then upload it again.

But then i'm not very webdesign savvy.
 
So, you’re asking for blog software that allows the templates to be modified through a web interface? Or are you asking for a Control Panel type software that allows web pages to be modified with a web interface?

If the former, then WordPress allows this, as long as you fiddle with the permissions settings. If the latter, then why not just use FTP?
 
I found Exponent very easy to use on my old site (Version 1 of Nitro RC Car Central). I now use phpWCMS for my site because I am used to it (I have used it for 1 1/2 years), and you can see that on my site if you view the source of it, but phpWCMS is harder to use, and some people couldn't figure out how to use it on opnesourceCMS. ;)

Both of the CMS's I have listed have WYSIWYG editors (html area), and both are free. ;)

If you do not like any od them, then you could try opensourceCMS. That has user comments and demos of lots of CMS's. :)

I have installed WordPress and the format is a little scattered and not quite what I was looking for, of course a different theme that could be edited might suffice. Joomla, on the other hand, looks to be more of what I was looking for. I need to finish reading to see if Joomla supports file uploads, etc.

How hard is it to change the look "Theme" of Joomla? Is it pretty easy to adapt your style to it?

Really quite easy. There is a theme manager built in, where you can easily install themes from a nice GUI. As far as building custom themes is concerned, there are just a few required pieces that you put into a PHP file and it's a go.

By the way, it supports file uploads. 👍

You are able to download the software for free, and its fully modable through the use of widgets, and you dont have to be totally mad about PHP :) you are also able to user the free hosted version like I did. hope you get it up and runing soon, easy updatable too, here is a friends blog used as his own portfolio and side.

What a dumb ass i am, i posted this then looked at your last post stating that you used wordpress, damn im useless.

So does phpWCMS....

It has a full file management section, and for big files, It can take them over from FTP. It also resizes them and make thumbnails/smaller copies of one image. ;)

That looks neat, however, Joomla has all of that as well.


I'm sure either would serve his purpose, however I've found in my experience in CMSs that Joomla has an easier looking interface (for the begginers), while still retaining just as many advanced options as it's competitors, if not more.

How do you go about customizing the look of Joomla? Is there an easy way to get away from the cookie cutter layout? Changing graphical as well as content layout? What do you use for your clients? Is it easy or are you pretty well stuck with available templates?

Joomla has a great interface IMO. I just never got the hang of skinning it...

Pako: If you want something simple, head for subdreamer. There's a free version available too :)
 
Subdreamer's online demo of "Offline" at the moment. Not a good sign.

Do you use Subdreamer currently? Care to share some examples if you do?
