I heard the Hauppauge brand is good, but is there anything I could get that's cheaper than $150-$200?

Maybe something in the $50-$100 price range(US currency)? That's still decent too?

And sorry if this has been posted before, or if it's the wrong place to post it.

It's just I really would like to be able to record my replays, to watch without having to boot up my ps3 and the game all the time. Also so I could edit them and then maybe upload a video or two to youtube...

oh wait, so a capture card is the kind where you have to install it on the motherboard of your pc, right? and a PVR is the kind that you just hook cables up to it and don't have to install it inside your pc?

if that's the case, then I'm looking for a cheaper PVR, not capture card...

sorry, this kind of thing is all new to me.

hmmm... so how exactly does something like that Pinnacle one work? How do you hook it up, how do you actually record, and where does it save the videos, etc?

The signal goes from PS3, through the capture device, and into your TV.

The capture device is attached to a PC and the PC uses the capture device for recording and saving of the resultant video.

Here's a page I created ages ago and it needs updating for new equipment, but it gives you an idea of how it works.

I currently use an Hauppauge HD PVR.

Hi, Daan i see you live in scotland, you do not by any chance live in the glasgow area, because i could sure use some help setting up this hauppauge HD PVR unit i bought from amazon, i aint got a clue i set it up as shown in the manual but i still cant record or do anything with it, £160 just sitting there doing nothing .

Here's the top 3 for gaming, IMO:

1. Hauppauge HD PVR - Records in HD (1080i) while you play in HD with no lag. Encodes in an unusual file format which will require expensive editing software. Best quality and most expensive $200 brand new.

2. HAVA Platinum - Records in DVD quality (480p) while you play in HD with no lag. Encodes in MPEG4 file format so virtually any video editor can be used. $150 brand new.

3. Pinnacle Dazzle - Records and plays in Standard Def. (360p I believe) Worst quality. Any video editor can be used. $90 brand new.

Or you could just setup a camera on a tripod behind you. LOL

is that what you were referring to as the Pinnacle Dazzle Recorder? Because this one is only about $50, not $90....

No, this one. I don't like that they added HD to their packaging and marketing. You can't get true HD from an S-Video input. What a bunch of crap.

Edit: Also, I forgot to mention that you need a piece of hardware to split your signal with the Dazzle.

PS3 --> Splitter --> Simutaneous CPU & TV output

That link isn't working for me... Sorry...

It brought me to the pinnacle website, but it said,

"Sorry, we are unable to locate that page.
Try retyping the URL or visiting another page on our site."

Mcjoz88, on second thought, just go with the $50 one. This $90 "HD" Dazzle captures the same quality as the $50. The $90 one just comes with HD editing software, which is a complete rip off.

oh, ok then. that last link you posted wasn't working either, but yeah I'll probably get that $50 one. I also saw one on the pinnacle site for $99, and it said you didn't need a pc to hook the device up to, but for some reason, they aren't selling that one right now....

Thanks for the help though, I appreciate it man!

I've got my ps3 running through a led monitor. Am I able to set up a capture with that or do I need a TV?

Are you using HDMI output with your PS3? IIRC the HDMI capture cards aren't viable for gaming because of the lag on the playback.

If your monitor has a component and/or composite input, you should be alright.

But it has inputs so you can record off things like a Playstation

The S-video input? Might as well get the Dazzle for half the price if you're going to roll with that type of quality. It has an S-video input too.

I know that it has S-Video and will only record at 480i, but you also get a TV tuner with it which is handy.

I used my HVR-2200 to record the Tuscan Night Challenge before they changed the track and the looks are fine just for basic uploads.

I'm sure they look just fine. But if you're in the market for a capture card only, then a TV card is not what you are looking for. Really, a TV card is used when you don't have a cable box. Otherwise, with the TV card, you're paying to much for the quality you are receiving as a capture device if you have no use for the TV tuner.
