Last winter I was on a quest to find a warm coat that I could go outside and do whatever in no matter what the temperature. I finally settled on one and I do like it. However, there is still a jacket I am missing from my range of cold weather apparel. I'm looking for a coat that will work from about 20-40 degrees, block the wind and be somewhat waterproof. My Northface Denali jacket keeps me warm but doesn't block the wind, while my Northface Apex Bionic jacket blocks the wind and rain but doesn't keep me warm.

I looking for suggestions, everything I've been reading points me Arc'Teryx stuff but I have no experience with them. I'm open to almost any brand as long as they are named and produce stuff that is made for climbing around on Mt. Everest. I've gotten cheaper brands before and they suck.

Any thoughts?

Wear a sweater under the Bionic.

Wear a sweater under the Bionic.

Then it would make it way to bulky and it wouldn't be easy to move in. I still want to hike until the snow falls and even then as long as it isn't too deep I'll go out and walk around the woods. Having something that's too bulky sucks for any outdoor activity.

When it comes to jackets I like to have the right application for whatever weather it is, I've been stuck way to may times with something that's either overkill or doesn't have enough cowbell.

wear a thermal undershirt and the bionic...

That wasn't nearly warm enough, the Bionic is not really made from temperatures much below 30 degrees. But I probably should have posted that my jacket problem has been solved. I picked up an Arc'Teryx Atom LT the other day it's probably the best piece of gear I've ever bought. I'm very happy with it.

I enjoy my [wikipedia]Pea coat[/wikipedia], (or at least, it's similar in style) but as you'd imagine, I only get about 2-4 days (rather, mornings or nights) a year to wear it where I live. When I travel to colder climes, its handles light rain and chilly stuff.

It's thick as a brick, so not what you'd use for anything "sporting".

Have you considered a snowboarding jacket? Obviously designed for snow weather temperatures and the sort of outdoor activity that allows plenty of movement.

I have a pea coat that I bought from a military surplus store, it's made entirely of wool and is pretty warm. I typically wear it when I go to the theatre or somewhere nice.

I also have a parka (ski jacket, snowmobile, climbing Mt. Everest) type of jacket from The North Face and it's excellent to wear when I'm outside for a long period of time. It feels about the same as a snowboard jacket, it just isn't hideous like most of them are.

As I've said though, I got something that meets my requirements for the time being, the Arc'teryx Atom LT. I'm thinking about picking up a Mountain Hardware Windstopper too.
