Hey guys,

Just got my new laptop in, and was wondering if there were some nice titles you guys could recommend me?

Since my other laptop is three years old I only played rather old games on it. Here are the specs of my new system:

Intel i3-350M processor (~2.4 Ghz)
4Gb DDR3 RAM (or something similar)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 1Gb VRAM
HDD: 640GB
Windows 7 64-BIT

I've always been an incredibly big fan of the Fallout 3 game, but I'm awaiting the verdict of you players to see if this system can run Fallout 3.

If you have any good shooters to recommend, preferably with a trial version available, that would be awesome. The only benchmark I have is a low of 30 FPS in crowded areas and a high of 65FPS~ in World of Warcraft on ultra settings.

Cheers!

you might try Crysis, you might have a fast enough computer to handle it...maybe. but the old Quake games and Unreal games should be pretty good. You can also try Half-Life and half-life 2 with Team Fortress.

I have played Crysis with a GeForce 9300 so there is no question about it that he should be able to get medium to high graphics. I would be able to get very smooth fps in low graphics.

Also here is the specs you need for Fallout 3:
Minimum System Requirements:

Windows XP/Vista
1GB System RAM (XP)/ 2GB System RAM (Vista)
2.4 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 256MB RAM (NVIDIA 6800 or better/ATI X850 or better)

Recommended System Requirements:

Intel Core 2 Duo processor
2 GB System RAM
Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512MB RAM (NVIDIA 8800 series, ATI 3800 series)

It's like a stroll in the park compared to some of the newer games.

Will try out that Crysis demo later 👍

Nick, is there a Fallout 3 demo available? I tried to visit the official website but there was nothing there so I figured there wasn't any.

Kind of disappointed with the lack of demos for games lately. I remember several years back in the days when pentium 4 processors were the latest thing, demos would come out for every single game being released. I always loved how you could give the game a personal test before you would buy it. Now you almost have to go and torrent games to use that as a demo run.

No there is no demos available for Fallout 3. One game I do recommend is Just Cause 2. There is an demo online here. You can have some of the most fun ever possible because it is not meant to be realistic. I would not be surprised if I have already clocked in 40 hours doing random stuff and generally having way too much fun.

Man, I took a look at Crysis on ultra high settings and it's mind boggling how good the graphics are. Without any doubt still better than any other game, and that for a 3 year old game!

Anyway, are COD:MW2 and Battlefield: Bad Company as good as they say or shouldn't I be bothered being interested in them?

Here is an earlier post I made about a user with the exact same laptop who played these games. Note that the FPS rate you see in those videos are fraps included: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=128910&page=2#post3933844

Downloading the Crysis demo right now, if I like it I might purchase the Crysis Maximum package which is going ridiculously cheap right now.

It's still one of the toughest challenges for graphics cards.

Team Fortress 2, BioShock series.
I believe that there is a test performance site somewhere around the site for PC games.

I'd say get COD4 before MW2. It's far more balanced for anyone coming in late to the party. I'm not sure how the players are on PC but there are loads of new people in PS3 lobbies, you could fit in and not get slaughtered by the guys that have been playing since it's release.

And there are Mods on PC than PS3.

Can you RUN it? A website to see if you can run certain games like Counterstrike before buying it or checking it requirements!
What it does

This site provides a One-Click solution that looks at your computer's hardware and system software to determine whether or not your current system can run a product. Each of your computer's components is evaluated to see how well it meets the minimum and recommended requirements for specific products. Recommendations are made on how to update or upgrade each component which does not meet the listed requirements. Sometimes, a simple, free software download is all that is needed. Sometimes you'll find that you need a different video card to fully experience what the game has to offer.

Counter Strike Series..... DUH!

No thanks, been there, done that. I'm looking for a good singleplayer shooter as most online people aren't fun to play with, and it gets very repetitive fast.

I've installed the Crysis demo with all settings on high and it ran very smooth. I'd say around 25-35 FPS. Smooth enough for me, I was blown away by the graphics of this game.

Definitly going to buy this game! 👍

Search for Crysis demo at Google, the official Crysis website has dozens of links to websites that offer the demo :)

Also found out that my local Gamezone store will be offering a Fallout 3 package with all 5 DLCs within 3 days time, together with Crysis Maximum these will be my first FPS games. Thanks for the suggestions and for stopping by guys 👍

wow, 1.77gbs. that'll take a while.

It's manageable if you start the download and you go to bed. When you get up again, the download should be finished so it's quite OK. But then again, it's not fun when Windows Updater updated your OS and decides to re-start the computer without even asking you, terminating your download :irked:

The first FEAR, far cry 2 (just for the shooting), brother in arms, max payne 2,....

that's why i'm using getright

If you're considering Fallout 3, make sure you take a look at Mass Effect - just like Fallout it's a FPS (uh... sorta... ok, not really.)-RPG, and it's an amazing game. I think Mass Effect runs better than Fallout 3 as well - I can run ME1 on full perfectly fine, but Fallout 3 on max isn't quite so rosy (have to make do with medium/med-high detail intead).

Specs are in my sig, and although your system uses a Mobility graphics chip (compared to my desktop's proper card) you should get fairly similar performance :)

Hey fellas, to which degree can I use Crysis as a benchmark to determine how other games will run on my laptop?

Crysis is running on high settings, and even though the framerate isn't sky-high, it's edging the consideration of trying out very-high settings, although this will probably be a bit too heavy. Even though it was released way back in 2007, can I use this to say that I can run games like Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Dead Space, Far Cry 2,the COD games on high as well? I'd imagine the newer games of these not to run so smoothly on high perhaps.

Also, since I'm more into single-player campaign shooters, I've scrapped COD:MW2 from my list since I've heard the singleplayer campaign is way too short.

Far Cry 2 and COD should both be easily smoother than Crysis. Oblivion is a bit old so it should be okay too. Fallout 3 is just Oblivion with guns.

The story didn't make any sense anyway. Skip Far Cry 2 as well and try Mass Effect.
