Hey guys, I have about two weeks to find a car. I don’t really have the security to take out a big loan at the moment, so a second hand car will have to do. Specs:

Budget: 8,000–10,000 AUD (About 7,000–8,500 USD). Insurance is also a factor. I’m not sure if I should get comprehensive insurance, but I guess for 10K I probably should, so something fairly affordable in-terms of insurance would be a real plus.

Power: Doesn’t matter, my old car had less than 50 BHP and I have kept up with cars such as a Porsche Cayman on twisty roads (including passing it around the outside of a hairpin), so I don’t need power to have fun.

Handling: Handling must be good. A car is nothing for me if it can’t corner quickly and respond to my input. My old car lacked quite a lot in this department, but since it was light I was able to do things such as in the above story. RWD would be preferred, but probably isn’t realistic for the budget.

Weight: Again, has to be pretty light. I want something nimble.

Reliability: I want this car to last at least 4 more years, so something that isn’t too old would be preferred. I really don’t want to buy someone else’s problem, so if you could give me things to look for to see if I’m buying a lemon or not would be really appreciated.

Most important factors (in order): reliability, budget, handling.

Completely bias, but I have to recommend a SEAT.

You can pick up this SEAT Ibiza GTi for under 5k

115hp, 6L/100km, around 10 years old and less than 100,000km on the clock. Want something slightly bigger and you can get a Cordoba (My Cordoba's boot is only 20L less then the new 5-Series) or Toledo for around the same price. Go look at VWs from the same time and they'll have twice as many KMs and cost twice as much, yet are pretty much the exact same car.

My Cordoba handles fantastic since I put a decent pair of tyres on it. Reliability wise mechanically my car has never had a puff of smoke and started first time every time, and I only get the oil changed once every 10k-15k other then that the bonnet never gets opened. I also only pay 50$ a month of insurance. Another thing is they generally haven't had the daylights trashed out of them.

If you wanted to go something safer in terms of cost of parts, you could pick up a pretty decent Swift GTi for 10k too, which would do the same job.

How about the FIAT Punto GT?

According to PD this car was inexpensive back then (1998 when it came out.) but it has 130HP and a turbocharger, so welcome to a world of wheelspin. :) It manuevers well, and has low insurance costs too.

This has performance that rivals the Peugeot 106 S16, so maybe this should be looked in to also. It is the Citroen Saxo 1.6 VTR with 120HP.

Both of these cars are light and quick, but also FF. They still turn pretty damn good. 👍

The price for these two cars must be lower now, as I see Peugeot 206's for the price of 4 grand, even though they are really rare in the US. Both 1998 models I think.

All of which might be super awesome if any of them could be brought in Australia....

Kinda far fetched but what about an older gen Corolla? If your lucky you can get a 98' Conquest (what we got) for around 6-8k. Everything is good but im not sure about the handling.

And i found this:

A Pulsar SSS. Im not sure about the car too much though.

I'm not sure if 'Skyline', 'Turbo', 'Under 25' and 'affordable in-terms of insurance' will ever belong in the same sentence....

Snooping around has led me to quite a few skylines (R34 even) that are going for less than $10k. It wouldn't surprise me if they all had blown motors or something though. Insurance might be an issue though.....

Just thinking up ideas here, but what about an old Mercedes? I took a quick look at a australian used car site, and possibly with the exception of being nimble, they seem to fit the description of what you're looking for. Also, I have no idea how much they insure for down there, but others here can help you with that.

Should probably mention that I'm myself starting to look for a new car, and very recently discovered that old S-classes (300SD's) were in my target price range, so that might have something to do with my suggestion. But still, give them a thought.

Wow, weird - I'm also looking for a car for about $10K AUD after I wrote my corolla off just over a month ago.

If you go private sale you should be able to pick up a 2000 model corolla, astra, lancer, pulsar for about $7K - dealer sale will be 1998-99 model of the same for about $10K. If you're anywhere near Parramatta forget about 'Auto Alley' - there's not much there. Head out to Parramatta Rd at Homebush -> Five Dock. More cars in that price range out that way.

Or even a Vectra....

My first thought was old-school Holden Commodore, but I've got no idea how expensive they are. Plus, it doesn't even sound like it would be of interest to you anyway...

My suggestion?

MKII Golf GTI

Cheap. Light. Easy to work on. A blast to drive.

...Its as simple as that...

I'm not sure about prices on insurance or cars down there, but I'd say an S14 silvia.

And if they sell them there, a Miata/MX-5/Eunos roadster. Great, awesome, fun, cheap, reliable car.

A golf was the first thing that came to my mind aswell. :)

And a Commodore will be around 5-10k depending on whether the owners (usually teens about 20years old) would've done anything to the car or not...

That car is illegal for him to drive (being a P plater)

While it is out of my price range and completely stupid, I can drive it. I got my license before those restrictions came in, so V8s and Turbo suggestions are welcomed. ;)

Thanks for your suggestions guys. There’s some really interesting ideas.

And the MX-5 would be awesome, but I doubt I can find a decent one for 10,000.

Well here are some searches of MX-5 around NSW:

Well can i recommend something? Why don't you get a Proton or an old 90's Mitsubishi. I think they are quite cheap there. The car has a good amount of HP and of course they handle quite well. :)

How about a early 90's Toyota Soarer. You should be able to pick up either the V8 or the Twin Turbo for less than $10k. Being a Toyota they are pretty much bullet proof and are fun to drive.

It seems that the seller of the ER33 made a mistake when posting it, as when I put it up he was selling it for $9,900AU (I thought there was something suspicious about the price). Seems he fixed it.

Honda CRX?

5-sp manual. As far as I know, these are reliable (much like the Civic) and, being a 1.6l 4-cylinder, should be cheap to drive. There's also another for sale here at roughly the same price.

Those Soarers (Lexus SC300/SC400 in the US) are fantastic cars. I'd get the Turbo model over the V8.

What about a used older Monaro? What do they price out at?

I'm getting ready to dodge the bottles thrown at me

But you can get a 2005 model Hyundai Getz for under 10,000 now. They're not by far the worst cars on the road (It won Australia's small car of the year in 2003 and 2005), and they still have 2-3 years warranty left on them. As well as being ridiculously cheap to run and insure.

Holden Barina's are slightly more 'sporty', and you can pick up a low km 2002-2003 model for around the same price. 2.

The previous Monaro went out of production in 1979, by now they are mostly restored and go for quite a bit of money, or a complete bomb, laden with rust driven by old men who haven't got a new car in 30 years.

The old Monaros cost HEAPS. Im pretty sure they go for like over 50k these days. Well i was WAY wrong.
