Nice episode that was, and a good write up again! 👍

Desmond seems to have gained the ability to look into the future, and he's just exploring it. How cool is that? And what is he going to do with it?

@ "the sub is back!": yeah, I understood sub as well. And it may well be a submarine, cause when the others entered the boat Sun was on, they didn't come by land, nor did anyone notice another boat. They just appeared out of nowhere, so why not from a submarine?

@ the spine: I also think it's Bens spine, so he has a tumor. Maybe Jack can get some info out of them for the offer of removing it.

Just for the sake of argument, I think they are talking about substitutes. Replacements coming in an ruining their plans, maybe?

But yes, my first reaction was "If they have a submarine, why does Ben want the boat so bad?"

He doesn't. He just wants to keep the boat away from the Losties. As Colleen said, "They might find us." With a boat, they could explore the other islands. With a boat, they could return to the Pala Ferry whenever they want, which probably nice a nice little trail running to the Others' village.

By taking the boat away, it's forcing the Losties to say confined to their little part of the island, safely away from them.

Well, he tells Hurley he is performing an experiment. I think it is to see if he can change the outcome of his vision. He can't stop lightening, but he can redirect its effects. From his conversation with Claire I would assume that he saw the lightening hitting her hut. Now he knows he can change the outcome. Now he knows he can avert disaster. Now he knows he can join the cast of Heroes :sly: Sorry. I imagine this will play a role in something picotal, whether it be saving the captives or just convincing people to walk a different way, saving lives.

This makes total sense to me now. Of course I have to ask what kind of submarine are we talking about? Is this a scientific little three man sub that they are overloading or is it a large sub that they run on a skeleton crew? The amounts of pepel they move around seem too big for a research vessel and too small for a military type vessel. Perhaps it is the Nautilus.

Now that everyone just said, "WHAT!?" Just read the Wiki summary to "The Mysterious Island" by Jules Verne, which was a sequel to "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysterious_Island It even mentions a possible Lost link at teh bottom. Perhaps Him is Captain Nemo, which is Latin for No Man, by the way.

Wow, I'm not sure how your comment led me down that path, but oh well. Anyway, if when this is all over the island falls apart in a volcanic explosion I will requote this post.

@ the spine: I also think it's Bens spine, so he has a tumor. Maybe Jack can get some info out of them for the offer of removing it.
I think this is what Ben is wanting Jack to do in exchange for sending him home. The negotiation has already been laid out, Jack just has to accept. I think Ben forgets that Jack takes his Hippocratic oath seriously, which is why he tried to save Colleen without hesitation. I believe that now that Jack has shown he will try to save the Others and has shown he is interested in trying to save the patient. Jack has shown he is a doctor first.

This could also be why Ben has never left the island. If he does he dies. The island's healing properties keep him alive and well and now they have a spine surgeon at hand, whether on purpose or by accident doesn't matter, they have him.

It is a reaching argument at best as I relistened to the line a couple of times and he says sub (no S). Ben is very articulate and it is easy to tell the difference between "the subs back" and "the sub is back" when he speaks. Plus the subs back is very poor grammar and not Ben at all. If he did say it as "the subs back" it would be "the sub's back," as in "the sub is back." I just can't see the grammar fitting for subtitutes. Now, if this wee Tom or Danny/Pickett I would say it is easily poor grammar, just like Hurley.

But yes, my first reaction was "If they have a submarine, why does Ben want the boat so bad?"
Two islands. Which, if there are two it is a safe bet that it is an archipelago, unless whatever geologic force formed them went dormant relatively quick. But look at pretty much any Pacific islands, they come in groups or chains. I'm not stretching much farther than this at the moment as an archipelago doesn't mean that they ar all habitable. It could be that just the two are life bearing, which makes the others pointless. Even Hawaii has a few lava rock, unfriendly islands that you can only see form helicopter. This is probably no different.

He doesn't. He just wants to keep the boat away from the Losties. As Colleen said, "They might find us." With a boat, they could explore the other islands. With a boat, they could return to the Pala Ferry whenever they want, which probably nice a nice little trail running to the Others' village.

Bingo! I also wonder if the hatch being gone didn't release something that was keeping them there. Remember, Desmond said he just ended up sailing in circles. So you have to wonder how come he never saw an other island. The only thing I can figure is that there was a working hatch at that time. My only other thought is that it is possible that whatever keeps them on the island and confuses them hides the world from the island.

Imagine it like an ant in a snow globe. He would go around and around, never realizing that he is being turned. The refelctiveness of the glass hides this effect from him. Now, we look into the snow globe from the outside and because it is not reflecting back in at us we can see through it.

It's just a thought. But if whatever the hatch was doing was creating this effect then it is very dangerous for the Losties to have a boat. Or if the effect is still going on then it could just be that Hurley was able to hear them tell Michael where to go to find help. The "door," so to speak. Or they could just be aware that random chance seems to happen a lot on this island. Perhaps it is powered by the Heart of Gold? (Last lame joke, I promise)

Now, I have one other thing, since I am on the hatch. The Others seemed very unconcerned when the hatch imploded and there was the crazy noise and the sky turned purple. Well, Ben did at least. But when they had Sawyer on the table we overhear Tom telling Ben that since the sky turned purple their coms have been down. Thsi brings two points top mind here. 1) Their connection to the outside world is not so much anymore. This could just be temporary though. 2) While Ben (and the Others) probably knew what it was they weren't aware of all its side effects. Knowing they were unaware of Desmond and his boat means that they definitely have no clue he is psychic now.

And one other thing. I was going through the season two DVDs special features and making of stuff over the weekend and I came across the Adrift episode, where Michael and Sawyer are on the raft remnants. When they created the shark they decided to throw in an easter egg and put a DHARMA logo on it, just for fun. It was supposed to be a dark scene and only HD viewers would see it. Well, in order to see Sawyer it had to be made lighter and everyone saw it. It wasn't supposed to have any importance to the story. One writer talked about how the story explains it while a producer was just writing it off as a goof. We may or may not ever get an explanation for the shark, as it wasn't supposed to be that obvious. I found that there are quite a few HD easter eggs that no one else gets to see until they watch the show on DVD. They have no importance to the story, but they are there just to mess with thos who do see them, or to create a red herring.

So, I got two things from this: 1) Give up on the shark thing. 2) Not every visual "clue" means something. They might just be F-ing with our heads.

Well, that's my morning ramble.

Rethinking (from almost a week ago now) the episodes timeline, was the sub comment made after sharpshooter Sun did her thing and before Jack tried to save Coleen? If so, then I totally agree with it being a submarine. Of course, I only threw out the substitute comment as a point of discussion. :D

On the other hand, maybe they are out of Miracle Whip for their sub sandwich.
*tucks his tail between his legs and slowly backs out*

Yes. It was done at the very beginning when Juliet first brought Jack food and he tried to mess with her by talking about Ben being in charge. Just then Ben comes running in and says that he needs her. She tries to tell him that it can wait and then he says "The sub is back. We have a situation, so come with me now." The next scene is Danny/Picket coming out to get Kate and Sawyer when he gets the radio call about Colleen being hurt, and then we see Ben and Juliet coming out to help Colleen.

So the sub comment was made after last week's episode and just before we see them carry Colleen, already shot by Sun, being brought back to the camp.

So, unless this episode had a Pulp Fiction style disjointed timeline (possible, considering the Pulp Fiction reference) it was timed with when the Others raiding party returned.

Um......just when I had gotten focused on Others mysteries they bring me back to Season 1 stuff. That was a monster of an episode.

Write-up forthcoming. We are implementing new software at work, so I don't know how long it will take. It may be without pictures, although I will include one for sure, just because it is an important visual for anyone keeping up with the show vicariously through the write-ups.

Some of the things on the Wiki I'll agree with. Others are a bit of a stretch. Good reading, regardless.
Which may be why I didn't catch some of their connections.

The basic plot of an island with strange goings on, an orangatan named Joop/Jupe, the castaway that has been their 12 years and helps out but refuses to be part of the camp, and the mysterious sub all seem too coincidental.

But of course, you cannot confuse coincidence with fate. That said, I can compare it to show writers trying to be sneaky. The producers back in season 1 said the island is somthing we have heard of, but is obscure.

Now if the Others play the role of the pirates and our recently seen eye-patched man plays a Captain Nemo-type role then I will be positive. Otherwise it could all just be literray references, like so many other things. For instance, the white rabbit with a black 8 painted on it is a reference to a comment Stephen King made in his non-fiction book about writing. "The Mysterious Island" could just be such a fitting story that there are more connections that can be made.

I'll be honest, the theory sounds good, but I hope you're wrong. Mainly because I don't want to know what the island is yet.

Well, the schedulled ending is six seasons. I am sure that three years from now we will be on so many other tangents we'll have forgotten.

That's true. I wonder if the premise is always going to be "what/where/why is the island?", or if we'll eventually find out most of the "mystery" answers and the show turns into more action/adventure.

A friend of mine said something last night that I think is true, though: they need to stop asking questions and start answering some.

Before I get to the latest episode, I want to answer an older question:
Of course I have to ask what kind of submarine are we talking about? Is this a scientific little three man sub that they are overloading or is it a large sub that they run on a skeleton crew?
I think it's the latter. All the tech stuff they have seems to come out of the 60s or 70s, so I think they have like a smaller military submarine from that period that can be run by a few people.

SPOILERS AHEAD! If you haven't seen the episode (s3e05), stop reading here!

So anyway ... ECO! I think I'm right in saying we're done with his backflashes for two reasons:

1. he's dead now! (which is sad, cause I really liked his character)
2. we've seen his whole development.

I found the black fog particularly interesting. He's met it on the island before, and now, it killed him. I understood this as being his "executioner", observing his behaviour on the island from day one, to see if he would confess his sins one day. Obviously he did, but not the way you would expect him to. So, the fog decided to execute him. I understand it like one of these fate things. We know there are many strange things going on on this island. I have no idea what this black fog is, and maybe it was only connected to eco and will never appear again. It could well be a judge over others sins as well, who knows. Oh and by the way, my sister brought up that it was the fog that ate the pilot out of the plane hanging in the top of a tree many episodes ago - remember? Could well be the case if you ask me.
And what was that Locke asked Eco? He knew Eco had seen something, and Locke asked him if it was a beautiful, bright light. It seems that was what he saw when he stared onto something big right in front of him also many episodes ago. They never showed us what he saw, and now we know. I have no idea what that could be though. Maybe it's the opposite of the black fog, the good white bright thing that opposes the dark black one, the other side of the equation to speak in Matrix terms. Who knows?

Ben! How cool was that? That man is a brilliant actor. Did you see his face struggling for composure when Jack confronted him with the tumor thing? And that video the woman showed him, where she secretly asked him to let Ben die during the operation. "Some of us want a change" - trust issues, eh? It seems the organisation of the others isn't as thight and as professional as it seemed. This promises to get seriously cool in the near future I believe.

Great episode that! 👍

And that video the woman showed him, where she secretly asked him to let Ben die during the operation. "Some of us want a change" - trust issues, eh

I have to say, the first thing i thought when i saw that was that she was lying to Jack, and that Ben really deserves to live but she just wants him dead - she's been playing Jack from day one and now she has him hooked she wants Jack to kill Ben so that she gains control. Or similar. I haven't really thought it through yet, but i do think that something wasn't quite right about that. Maybe i'm just looking too much into it, who knows, we will find out sooner or later.

A great episode. Shame about Eko, couldn't believe it when i saw it.

OK, here we go. Work has been hectic. We are supposed to switch to a new system and our IT department decided to take the day off.

SPOILER WARNING

Episode 305: The Cost of Living

This episode is Ekocentric.

As usual my comments will be in blue.

Flashback: Doing bad to do good

We see Eko and his brother Yemi as young boys in Africa. Eko is trying to steal food for Yemi. A nun catches him and takes him into the church to tell him to confess. Eko looks and sees the legs of a priest behind the curtain. The nun tells him he must go and confess. He tries to explain that Yemi was hungry but the nun says it doesn't matter. They stole and stealing is a sin. Yemi grabs Eko's hand.

Next we find Eko just after the drug plane took off and he is in the truck with the soldiers. They arrive at Eko's childhood home, just outside the church where Yemi was a priest. Eko goes into the church and picks up The Bible from the confession bench. He opens it to find a picture of himself and Yemi as boys and has to fight back tears. Just then a woman with a young boy walks in looking for Yemi. Eko explains that he was called away suddenly and he would be replacing him. The woman introduces herself as Amina and her son Daniel. She works in the clinic and Daniel is the alter boy at the church. Amina asks if Yemi is still going to London and explains that he was going to London at the end of his week to finish his studies. Eko says that he will be taking his place.

Eko returns home.

Later Eko is in the church washing his hands from a bowl. Daniel looks up and tells him that he isn't supposed to do that, it's holy water. Eko explains it away by saying that he is washing away his sins. Daniel says that Yemi would never do it, but Eko interrupts him saying that he is not Yemi. Just then gunfire erupts outside and Eko tells Daniel to stay inside as he goes out to find men with guns driving up in a Jeep. One of the men asks where Yemi is and Eko asks who wants to know. The man steps up asking again where Yemi is, but at that moment Amina comes running over saying that the shipment is late. Eko asks what they are talking about and the man tells her to explain their arrangement. Amina tells him that they receive medicine from the Red Cross and they keep 20% and give the rest to the men. The man looks at Eko and says, "In exchange protection," and then says that everyone benefits and he hopes they can keep up their arrangement. Eko just says, "I am not afraid of you," and turns to walk away but the man shoots a woman standing nearby and tells Eko that he doesn't want anymore lives on his conscience.
normal_costoflivingcap268.jpg

I didn't know Blade had a brother in Africa.

Eko finds Amina at the clinic and asks her how often they receive the vaccines. She says it is six months , if they are lucky. He asks about them giving it to the militia and she explains that before Yemi they had none and it fetches a high price on the black market. She then tells him that he reminds her of Yemi, he is a good man too.

Later Eko, dressed in regular clothes, meets a man. The man inquires about Eko selling vaccine and Eko tells him it must be done by Sunday because he is leaving the country.

Back at the church Eko is looking up at the crucifix on the wall when the militiamen come in. The man from before tells him that he hears he has vaccine for sale and if he thought he could do this he was mistaken. He goes on to explain that he is superstitious and can't bring himself to kill a priestÂ….so he will just cut off his hands. Two of the men hold Eko's hands down with a rope. As the knife swings down Eko moves quickly, grabs the knife and kills the two men, leaving the leader begging on his knees. Eko raises the knife and says, "You do not know who I am," and then kills the man. When Eko walks outside he is still holding the bloody knife and has blood splattered all over himself. Daniel and Amina, among others, are out there and look at him. Eko drops the knife.
normal_costoflivingcap440.jpg

This guy apparently doesn't watch Oz.

Eko is leaving the church with a suitcase in his hand when Daniel comes up and asks where he is going. Eko says that he is going to London. Next Daniel asks if he is a bad man because his mom says that he is a bad man. Eko looks at the crucifix and says that God only knows. Once outside he sees Amina with the vaccine shipment and mentions it to her. She is far from grateful, explaining that other men will come. Just then Eko hears hammering and turns to see them boarding up the church (Even though Daniel never left?). Eko asks what they are doing, it is Yemi's church. Amina says that it is no longer sacred and then lectures him about how he will one day be judged and that when he is in London he needs to repent because he owes God for every life he has taken. She then tells him that if he truly believed that this was Yemi's church then he owes Yemi one church.

And this explains why Eko was building a church. He owed one to Yemi. So, was he never really religious? Was it all just for his brother?

Side Story - The Test of Hippocrates

Jack is sitting in his cell when Ben comes in. Ben ins wearing a long-sleeved white shirt and invites Jack for a walk. Jack says that Ben says that as if he won't just throw a bag over his head and drag him out if he says no. Ben suggests that he not say no and then lays a shirt identical to his own and asks Jack to put it on. Jack then asks Ben if he has pain and numbness in his fingers and toes. Ben asks Jack why he is asking him these questions and Jack explains it is because he has an aggressive tumor on his spine that is going to kill him. Jack explains that unless the x-rays he saw were very recent he won't be talking walks for very much longer. Ben says that he has no clue what Jack is talking about and Jack finishes putting on his shirt and says it is his mistake.

Ben leads Jack outside to the shore where Colleen's funeral is beginning. Ben tells Jack to stand near the back and goes forward to lead the procession. Juliet comes up next to Jack and says that she hates funerals and asks Jack if Ben let him out. Jack says that he did and then gives her a smart comment about getting a new shirt too. Juliet's response is to just say, "Goodbye Jack," and walk to the funeral. Colleen's body is set afloat in the ocean on a floating funeral pyre, much like a Viking funeral, as Brenda Lee's "I Wonder" plays over the intercom system. As they walk back Ben asks Juliet why she showed Jack his x-rays and Juliet explains that she didn't tell him whose they were, but she guessed Ben did.
normal_costoflivingcap151.jpg

Others Funeral

Later Juliet brings Jack a cheeseburger and fries to his cell. (It appears to be a Ruby Tuesday cheeseburger, possibly Applebee's) m she makes a joke about having to slaughter the cow and process the meat as well as the process for making the French fries. She tells him he should try rendering animal fat. Juliet sits cross-legged on the table as Jack asks if there is no ketchup. Just then Ben walks into the room. Ben says that he would like to talk to Jack and Juliet says OK, but Ben says he wants it to be alone. Jack plays up the tension by saying that he doesn't have a problem with Juliet being there, but Ben says he does because of doctor patient confidentiality. Juliet walks out.

Before Ben starts Jack asks if he can eat while Ben talks, showing Ben little of the respect he was just showing for Juliet. Ben starts by saying that they had a wonderful plan to break Jack. They were going to convince Jack that they weren't his enemies and that he actually wanted to perform the surgery. He explains that this was all based on the assumption that Jack would become invested and points out that Juliet looks a lot like Jack's ex-wife. Jack asks Ben while he is telling him all this and Ben explains the plan got shot when Jack saw the x-rays too soon. Jack asks if this is all just so that he can operate on Ben, and save his life. Ben says, "No, I want you to want to save my life," and explains that they are beyond that now and that he wants Jack to think about it. As Ben walks away he turns back and asks if Jack believe in God. Jack asks him if he does and Ben says, "Two days after I found out I had a fatal tumor on my spine, a spinal surgeon fell out of the sky, and if that's not proof of God, I don't know what is," and then walks out.
normal_costoflivingcap348.jpg

Do you believe in God?

Juliet comes in on the opposite side of the glass from Jacks cell and Jack makes a comment about her not trusting him anymore. She explains that she trusts him she just wants to put in a movie for him. Jack explains that he doesn't want to watch a movie but Juliet says it is "To Kill a Mockingbird," it's a classic, and then she rolls the TV up against the glass. Jack explains again that he doesn't want to watch a movie and Juliet says she will turn the sound down then. Then Juliet says, "I'm sorry for bringing you here, and for everything that's been done to you and your friends. You have to know that we were desperate. It was also so we could save his life."

On the TV screen, Jack sees a video of Juliet holding a card that says: Ignore everything I'm saying.

"Ben, he's a great man," Juliet says.

On the TV screen, the next sign says: Ben is a liar.

"I know you find that hard to believe, but he is."

Jack looks at the security camera briefly and then back to the TV.

The next sign she holds says: And he is very dangerous.

"You probably feel like you don't have a choice, but you do, Jack. Free will is all we've really got, Jack."

The cards say: Some of us want a change. But it has to look like an accident. It has to look like you tried to save him. And that's up to you, Jack.

"Anyway," Juliet says, "I just wanted to put in my two cents. I told you before you can trust me. I want you to trust me now when I tell you that doing the surgery is absolutely the right thing for you to do."

On the cards: It's a complicated surgery. No on would ever know. And I would protect you.

"It's the right thing," she says, "because he deserves to live."

Cards: Now tell me to turn off the movie.

"Turn the movie off," Jack says.

She takes the movie. Before walking out she says, "Think about what I said, please."

The question here is: Is Jack being conned so that he is being tested to see if he fits their definition of good or bad? Of course does that definition fall under the willing to kill for the greater good or not being willing to kill at all? Jack has yet to kill. (The marshal being an exception that was more Sawyer than Jack) Is this a test to see if he will kill?

Main Story - Monster of a Confession

Eko is lying in a shelter recovering from his polar bear wounds when Sayid looks in on him. (I assume Sayid returned with very little fanfare Hurley explains that he has been like that for a couple of days. Sayid tries talking to Eko but gets no response. Sayid then asks Charlie what happened to him and Charlie asks if he means before or after they saved him from the polar bear caves. Hurley then tells Sayid to come on because Locke will want to know that they are back. And then tells Eko to stay alive.

Eko dreams of the situation leading to Yemi's death outside the drug plane. Eko then hears a voice telling him to wake up and when he opens his eyes a small lighter is lighting Yemi's face. Yemi tells him that it is time to confess and be judged, he knows where to find him. Eko wakes up. At that moment Hurley asks if the others smell smoke and they turn back to find a fire in Eko's shelter. They rush to save Eko and put the fire out. Charlie rests Eko against a tree and Eko tries to say something about his brother but Charlie tells him he is fine. Charlie goes to help fight the fire as Locke comes up. When Locke asks where Eko is Charlie points towards the tree but Eko is gone.
normal_costoflivingcap034.jpg

Boo!

Later we find Locke, Sayid, and Desmond sitting on the beach together and Locke is discussing how he thinks they might be able to find Jack ad the others. Sayid questions their letting Desmond in on it and Desmond just asks if it was intended to hurt his feelings. Locke then asks Desmond to explain to Sayid how the computer was for more than just pushing the button and that it was connected to other stations and could be used for communication. Sayid points out that the hatch is exploded (I guess exploded/imploded are used interchangeably on Lost) Locke points out that one hatch has but there are others that they can investigate.

At that point Hurley and Charlie walk up saying that they have looked everywhere and can't find Eko, there is no trail, not that they know what a trail looks like. Locke asks if he said anything and Charlie says it was nothing coherent, just mumblings about his brother. Locke quickly stands up and announces they are going to the computer. Charlie asks about Eko and Locke says they are all going to the same place.
normal_costoflivingcap160.jpg

Why can't my meetings be held here?

We find Eko stumbling through the jungle. As he moves forward we can see the black smoke whisping by in the background. Eko doesn't see it. Eko makes a stick into a walking stick and starts to move but suddenly a man throws a knife at his head, just missing. Eko pulls the knife from the tree and goes to kill the militiaman from his past, who is once again begging for his life. Eko goes to kill him but the man turns into Daniel, the alter boy. Daniel raises his finger to his lips and shushes Eko and then says confess and disappears. (OK, so that was weird.)
normal_costoflivingcap211.jpg

That was close.

Back on the beach Locke is packing a bag in the kitchen area and informs every one of his plans, inviting anyone that wants to come along. Hurley questions this because Jack usually goes off with just one or two people and keeps everyone out of the loop. Locke explains that he isn't Jack and the more the merrier. Nikki volunteers to go and Locke tells her and anyone else to meet them in ten minutes. Paulo asks Nikki what she is doing and she says that he always complains that he is left out, but now is his chance. Desmond walks up and asks Locke if they are going after a computer or Eko and Locke explain that Eko is heading for the plane that crashed where the pearl station is located. Desmond comments that it is quite a coincidence and Locke reminds him not to mistake coincidence for fate.

Eko is wandering through the jungle when he comes to a stream and kneels down to drink from it. He uses shreds of his clothing and mud to patch up his wounds, which have begun bleeding again. While bent over he hears the monster sounds and sees a reflection of the smoke in the stream. He spins around to face it and it disappears into the jungle. At that moment Locke appears on the other side of the stream and says, "Hello, Eko."
normal_costoflivingcap279.jpg

You have to be tricky.

As they are walking through the jungle Locke asks Eko what it is that he is doing. He says he knows he is looking for the plane wreckage and then asks if he is looking for Yemi. Eko grabs Locke and shoves him against a tree, with a knife to his throat and tells him to never mention Yemi's name again. Locke calmly asks him what it is that he is afraid of. Eko backs down and keeps moving until they find the plane.

At the wreckage Locke shows Sayid the hatch entrance and tells him to take everyone down, he will be down in a minute. After everyone is gone Locke helps Eko remove rocks blocking the entrance to the plane and asks him what he saw back at the stream. Eko doesn't answer him and so Locke explains that he saw it once too. Eko asks him what he saw and Locke explains that he saw a beautiful light. Eko tells him that is not what he saw. (Could we have a light vs. dark monster thing going on?) Eko then climbs inside the plane and finds that his brothers' body is missing. Confused Eko pulls the picture of himself and Yemi as kids from his pocket and looks at it. Locke tells Eko that when he was tracking him to the polar bear cave he found his crucifix and hands it to him. As Locke heads down into the hatch Eko looks up at the sky.
normal_costoflivingcap368.jpg

Someone needs to relax

Down in the pearl hatch Nikki is watching the orientation video while Desmond and Sayid try to find a way to connect the computer to other hatches. Sayid gives up, explaining that the system is only one way and it can't be done from there. Nikki asks about the other stations and shows them where the orientation film mentions projects, plural, so Sayid decides to route the video signals to the working monitors. At that moment a toilet flushes and Paulo steps from the bathroom, saying that the toilet still works. Sayid gets the signal for the monitor to work and they see another computer. Suddenly a man with an eye patch fills the screen, looking into the camera, and then reaches up for the camera and it goes to static. Locke says, "I guess he'll be expecting us."

Are you looking at me?

Outside Eko is sitting by the plane when he sees Yemi. He goes after Yemi and eventually catches up to him. He asks why Yemi wants to hear his confession now and Yemi asks if he is ready. Eko says that he is ready and hands Yemi his cross and says that he does not want forgiveness for he has not sinned. He explains that he only did what he had to do to survive. He tells Yemi how a young boy once asked if he was a bad man and if he could answer him today he would tell how he killed a man to save his brother's life and that he is proud of this. Eko then drops to his knees and says that he did not ask for the life he was given, but it was given nonetheless and with it he did his best.

Yemi's face turns to a scowl and he says, "You speak to me as if I am your brother." Eko suddenly looks horrified and asks who he is, but Yemi runs into the jungle. Eko follows him but he has disappeared. The monster passes behind Eko who turns at the sound but it is already gone. When he turns back the monster is raised up large in front of him. Eko begins to recite the Lord's Prayer. The monster grabs him and throws him against a tree.
normal_costoflivingcap620.jpg

It's a bit late for prayers.

Inside the pearl they hear the sound of the monster and quickly run to see what is happening. (Since when did they run towards the monster?) Meanwhile the monster is tossing Eko about like a rag doll, slamming him against trees and into the ground. By the time Locke gets to him the monster is finished and drops him to the ground, disappearing into the jungle. Locke finds Eko and rolls him over trying to talk to him. Eko begins speaking very quietly and Locke leans over to hear him as the others come running. Eko remembers walking arm and arm with his brother as a boy and smiles, then dies. Sayid asks what Eko said and Locke says, "He said, we're next."
normal_costoflivingcap665.jpg

Eko dies.

normal_costoflivingcap672.jpg

And we're next.

So, some questions:

1) Is the smoke monster actually all the visions people are having on the island?
2) Is there a light and dark monster, as Locke saw a beautiful light?
3) Could that be the good and bad of the island?
4) Is Juliet lying to Jack?
5) Is anyone telling Jack the truth?
6) Is Jack facing a true good/bad test?
7) WTF is going on?

I heard an interesting theory on the LostPedia forums: The idea is that we, the audience, is the monster, which is why we see their flashbacks and we only get a third person view when the monster acts as more than an observer.

While I think this sounds cool I think it is just someone with a good imagination blowing some smoke. Besides, if we were the monster we would have killed off Paulo or Nikki.

As for Eko's death. There seems to be a low tolerance on the Lost set for any cast members with legal troubles.
http://starbulletin.com/2006/09/05/news/story01.html
All arrested members have been killed off, as well as two with traffic citations. Arzt is the only guy that died without legal issues, but he was a red shirt.

Of course it could just be that they are all just tailies and their stories were merely there to bring Bernard back to Rose. I hope that isn't the case as that would mean that all of season 2 was simply an extended story to bring one character into the show who had a connection to a current main character. Of course it also creates the ability for many people to die, thus proving the severity of the situation, without killing a single main character. In other words, a season full of red shirts. The best way to test this is to see if either Bernard dies or Nikki and Paulo eventually die.

If Bernard lives and no one else dies or Nikki and/or Paulo die then we know season 2 was to get Bernard in with a group of red shirts. If they all die then we know that we can just expect to meet new characters randomly, and then we can expect them to die.

That's actually not the case this time. The only one that I'm aware of that was "forced" off the show was Michelle Rodriguez. Constantly late to the set, not a team player, holier-than-thou attitude, etc.

Adawale asked to be written out for personal reasons. The production crew has been quite happy with him, and he's had a great time making the show. He lost both of his parents last year, and he has some personal projects that he wants to do as a result, that a television schedule doesn't allow. Although Eko was one of my favorite characters on the show, I don't mind Adawale's reasons for leaving.

Don't forget Boone and Shannon, either. I don't know what Ian's reasons for leaving were, or whether the character was always meant to die early (hence his comparitavely frequent appearances in flashbacks and visions). Shannon, however.. I never had much respect for the character, thought she was completely useless. Felt nothing when she died, except the same relief that Boone felt when he thought she was dead. Maggie's reasons for leaving were stupid, though.. she thought she was a big "movie star" and couldn't be bothered doing a measly little television show anymore (despite the fact that Lost was the only reason she was even considered for a role in a feature film). Not much different than the character she portrayed, really.

I don't think Libby's death had anything to do with her legal troubles, either, although we don't know the real reasons she left.

Wow, you guys are REALLY intellectual about all this

Meh, this week's episode is the last of Fall... That sucks big time :(
But it will have Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity, Slither) in it and he is always a great addition to anything he does. Also, we will get 16 straight weeks when we come back in February.

Well, the producers claim that all deaths were planned and PR is a wonderful thing to play with. But then JJ Abrams is rumored to have a zero-tolerance attitude towards legal foolishness buy his cast and crew.

But, like anything it is all just rumor and speculation. And in all honesty, I am not about to try and debate off-screen drama. I honestly don't care. I only pay attention to it enough to try and figure out what clues it gives to future plot twists. I just found it a large coincedence, but I am not about to mistake coincedence for fate, or an angry producer.

I am more likely to believe that all the tailies were just red shirts so that as the drama of the Others continued we learned to truly fear them. The story of the Tailies alone let us know what the plan of the Others was and what may have happened had Ethan not been found out and killed. Their entire participation was simply a build up to what is happening now with Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. By having Michelle Rodriguez and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje you gathered more interest as they have a fan base from elsewhere, but neither need the show for their careers. Cynthia Watros is fairly new to the scene but she still has a recuring role contract as she is still an important part in multiple character's pasts.

This of course goes the other way as well. In the original script Jack dies in the pilot near the end, throwing the audience for a loop and letting us know that yes people will die. Instead they red-shirted the pilot so that he could go be telepathic on Heroes because they liked Matthew Fox and the character of Jack appeared to have much more depth than originally thought. Another character that was supposed to be small was Ben. He was supposed to be gone after only a few episodes but Michael Emerson blew them all away and they immediately knew that his character had to be given a bigger part.

DQ
That makes it sound like they are making it up as they go along.
Thinking all the way back to my creative writing class:

You can outline a storyline, plot, and basic important events to a story but the exact details on the page don't come out until you put pen to paper/hand to keyboard.

In his intros and different essays about writing Stephen King talks about unfinished stories where he knows how he wants it to end, but he can't get there. Many times he has gone back and reorganized these, getting less detailed, and puts them together as short story collections.

In a TV show you have about five or six writers, a few producers, and multiple directors to help fill in the details with ideas and so the problem an individual writer has is typically avoided. On the special features on the Lost DVDs they show the meetings where final drafts are being worked over in meetings a couple of weeks before shooting. Characters can be added and dropped, or even increased or decreased as needed or as they fit best, but the main story and plot are still there.

If Jack had died we would still be following Locke or Sayid as a leader with Sawyer still creating problems. Because Jack remained then they get to create tension with a Kate love triangle and it adds a new aspect not originally planned. If Ben hadn't been there more than a few episodes we would still have the Others and Jack, Kate, and Sawyer would still be imprisoned. But Ben hangs around and now it adds this creepy cool factor to the Others. His presence doesn't change who the Others are or what they are doing. Juliet may be soft with Jack but we have seen that she is just as cold as Ben.

For any writer it is great if the story can take on a life of its own. The trick is making sure that it doesn't get away from you. That is why television always uses multiple writers.

Let's outline unchangeable events:
I: Plane crash lands on mysterious Island
A: Group of survivors must stay alive long enough to get home.
B: The Survivors must face their past to deal with the present

II: There is a strange monster on the island.
A: It kills some without killing others
B: The monster seems to play a role in the hallucinations.

III: They find a hatch.
A: There is more than one hatch.
B: A button must be pushed in the hatch.
C: Eventually the button isn't pushed/hatch implodes.
D: Other hatches will be discovered.

IV: The island once housed the DHARMA Initiative
A: DHARMA was funded by the Hanso Foundation
B: DHARMA's remnants appear to play a role in the island's mystery.

V: There are other people on the island
A: These Others appear to be DHARMA remnants
B: The Others create trouble for the survivors
C: The Others eventually kidnap main characters

VI: There are actually two (or more) islands
A: A second island is where the captives are kept.

VII: We figure out what the island is.

VIII: The survivors get home.

And I am sure there is a lot more in between VI and VII. But does any of the above depend on who lives and who dies? All that matters is that the events happen in a believable order with the characters we have, and we have a good story and acting to get from one to the next. The life and death situation of the island makes it easy to merge the story with any character changes that must be made.

You have to remember: When Lost was first pitched it was just a story about people who crash landed on an island, nothing else. To be given a prominent time slot and faith from ABC JJ Abrams and Damon Lindelof had to lay out the story for three seasons. This is when it became the sci-fi mystery thriller that we know today. Once it was apparent that it was more than just an average show, but it would be a big show, they added to make it six seasons with a solid ending (and possibly a rumored movie afterwards). Outside of this outline, which only maybe five people have seen, is a lot of flexibility to go from point A to Z.

So, I guess you can say each episode is made up as they go along and the details of each season are, but how the main story and plot progress is laid out. If they were making things up all the way then I don't see how it could be this good.

Well, the producers claim that all deaths were planned and PR is a wonderful thing to play with. But then JJ Abrams is rumored to have a zero-tolerance attitude towards legal foolishness buy his cast and crew.

Wasn't the producers that said it, it was Adewale himself in an interview given the day after the episode aired. :) Not trying to be argumenative, just defending a guy that I believe left the show for legitimate personal reasons, and no reason to think he was ousted just because he got pulled over.

Not all deaths are planned, though, we know that. I don't take everything the producers say at face value.

I do agree with you about the storytelling thing, though, and I issue the same response whenever they say that events like the characters' deaths are a sign of "not knowing where the show is going". There's a big difference between a story arc and an individual scene. Anyone who's done any writing (and I have) will know this. I've written several stories that end up having almost no similarity to what I originally planned, yet I'm still happy with the way they came out, and I feel I accomplished what I wanted to. Happens all the time, to pretty much any writer.

And this was an interview I did not see, so I may stand corrected. Mayhaps I should open the current Entertainment Weekly instead of letting it sit on the living room floor. I did bring it with me to work today.

In my defense, I was referring to the producers defending Ana-Lucia and Libby's deaths last season as having nothing to do with their DUIs and being planned.

Not all deaths are planned, though, we know that. I don't take everything the producers say at face value.
They have thrown out some red herrings so that the fans quit sniffing around the right areas before.

I dare anyone to write a quality (<- keyword) story, but give me a detailed outline in advance so I can see how well they kept to the small details while making the general plot work. A truly imaginative person will have 20 ideas on how to get from point A to point B and find the one they chose doesn't work as well with how they get from B to C as another one does.

OK, read the article. Eko left of his own accord. he doesn't like getting stuck on one character too long, his parents are sick, and he wants to make an autobiography of his childhood.

And now for why you are all really here.

This was an interesting episode, and it allows me a "I told you so" moment.

SPOILER WARNING!!!

Episode 306: I Do

This is a Kate-centric episode.

As usual my comments will be in blue.

FLASHBACK - 'Till Criminal Pasts Do Us Part

We are following Kate as she walks down a hotel hallway carrying a package. She enters a room and sets the package on the bed and opens it. It is a wedding dress. Just then there is a knock on the door and someone saying that they are the police. He says they are doing a room-to-room search because they believe that there is a dangerous person in the building. Kate tries to get him to go away but he threatens to break the door down, so Kate opens the door. It is a police officer (Played by Nathan Fillion) and he looks at her and then asks, "So, you wanna get it on?" Kate smiles and says yes, jumping into his arms, kissing him.
normal_ido-cap0014.jpg

Wanna get it on?
normal_ido-cap0020.jpg

Yeah baby!

After the deed is done we find Kate and the officer cuddling in bed and Kate tells him that he shouldn't be there because it is bad to see the bride the day of the wedding. He tells her that it is bad luck to see the bride in her wedding gown before the wedding. He then looks over at the wedding dress now hanging up and asks if she has tried it on yet. Kate says that she has to suck her breath in to get it on but it fits and it will take her forever to get it on. He tells her that she only has 12 hours to get ready so she had better get started. He then tells her he loves her and calls her Monica (This is while she is on the run? How do you manage to settle down long enough to fall in love when you are on the run?)

Next we find Kate just before the wedding in her dress in front of a mirror. Her mother-in-law comes in to the room to check on her and then gives her a necklace, which her mother had give to her, and explains to Kate that she doesn't have any daughters so she is giving it to her. Kate thanks her and tells her that mothers-in-law aren't supposed to be nice. When Kate tries it on she says that it is perfect.

We jump to the ending of the wedding ceremony after the rings and the vows where the priest is telling them that a marriage is about honesty and how Kevin Callis (her groom) said that he loved her so much because he knew that with her what you saw was what you get. He then pronounces them and they kiss.
As they begin to walk out Kevin's mother gives her a little wave and Kate smiles. She appears to truly be in love and happy.
normal_ido-cap0251.jpg

Kate makes a beautiful bride.

An undetermined amount of time later we find Kate shopping in a grocery store when her cell phone rings and she answers it. It is Kevin. He asks what she is up to and she tells him that she is at the grocery store getting stuff for supper; it is taco night and he better like it. He says he will and then they get off the phone. When Kate finishes buy groceries she goes to a pay phone outside and makes a call. As soon as she dials the number she sets a kitchen timer on top of the phone. On the other end of the line the marshal answers. He signals for another man to trace the call and then tells Kate that he hasn't heard from her in a while. She calls on Catholic saint holidays and a couple had gone by without a call. Kate explains to him that she is tired of running. He immediately asks who the guy is. Kate explains that she has fallen in love and wants to settle down but feels that she can't do that as long as he is chasing her. The marshal tells her that he will make a deal with her: if she quits running he will quit chasing her, but they both know that isn't going to happen. Kate begins to say more but her timer goes off and she hangs up.

Stepford Kate

Next we find Kate and Kevin sitting down to eat breakfast and she makes a smiley face on his pancakes with whip cream. He laughs and then tells her he has a surprise for her and she needs to look under her placemat. She pulls out an Oceanic envelope and Kevin says that the honeymoon he has been promising her for six months is in the envelope. She is holding two tickets to Costa Rica. (I bet passports are a pain to get when you are using a fake ID[/clue]) Kate frowns for a bit and Kevin notices and asks her what's wrong. She says it's nothing she was just thinking about how great of a husband he is and then gives him a big hug and kiss. As she hugs him when can see she looks scared. Then Kevin leaves for work and after he is gone Kate stares after his police cruiser with a worried look on her face

Later Kate is in a bathroom taking a pregnancy test. She looks at the result and it reads negative. She begins crying and sits down on the floor. (Does anyone get this?) Later on she brings Kevin a glass of tea as he is sitting in their home office doing typical police paperwork on a fugitive case he is working on. Kate asks him what he would say if she told him that she were a fugitive, that she was wanted for blowing up her father and had been on the run. He calls her Monica and she interrupts him saying that isn't her name. She explains that she nearly had a child and taco night and all of this stuff is not who she is. She tells him that she truly loves him but she has to go and is sorry. As she leaves he stands up to stop her but he gets wobbly and asks what she did. She explains that she drugged him so that they wouldn't think he knew and lose his job. He passes out on the floor and she puts the necklace his mother gave her on her wedding day in his hand and then leaves.

The truth comes out.

Side Story - Locke finds his direction

Locke is covering Eko's body with a blanket and Niki asks what happened to him. Locke tells her that it must have been an animal, maybe one of the bears. Niki asks if they are going to carry him back and Locke tells her that they will bury him there, the people at camp have seen one too many funerals. He volunteers to sneak back to camp and grab a couple of shovels and Sayid says he will come with him, but Locke tells him no and that eh will be back in an hour. Sayid pushes the issue, saying that it isn't safe and so Locke allows him to come with him.

While they are walking through the jungle Sayid asks Locke what really killed Eko. Locke says that the people at camp call it the monster even though he doesn't have a name for it. Looking at Sayid he notices he looks doubtful and comments that he doesn't believe in monsters. Sayid says that he only believes in what he can see and since Locke has seen it he should tell him what he thinks it is. Locke says that he thinks it might be whatever brought them there. Sayid asks if he thinks that the monster decide Eko was meant to die. Locke explains that Eko died for a reason, but he doesn't know what it is yet. Sayid asks if that is why he lied and why they aren't headed for camp. Locke says they are, but they have to make a detour first.
normal_ido-cap0159.jpg

What killed Eko?

Locke, Sayid, Desmond, Paulo, and Niki stand around Eko's grave and Locke begins to say a few words saying, "When the hatch exploded, your prayer stick fell out of a tree, right on top of me. So, Sayid and I went out to get it. It didn't feel right to bury you without it. I'd like to think you died for a reason, Mr. Eko. I just hope it's not too long before we find out what the heck it might be. Rest in peace, Mr. Eko." After that he begins to pound the prayer stick into the ground using a rock and says, "Thank you for helping me--" but he is cut off because he caught the most prominent verse on the stick; Gen 13:14 Lift up your eyes and look north.
I called it!!! To make sure everyone remembers let me quote myself from Post 47/Episode 3 write-up.
me
(The actual verse says, "The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west." (NIV). Is the lack of the three other cardinal directions on purpose and a clue? I checked multiple versions, and they all include all four directions, essentially saying look around you. Eko's version just says look north. Are the Others to the north? Is there something that must be done to the north?)
BOOYAH!!!

Funeral for a friend.

Quick reminder.

Main Story - Jack Grows a Pair

Kate wakes up to the sound of Sawyer throwing rocks at the food button, making it give the warning message and send out electricity. Kate asks what he's doing and he says that he is throwing rocks. She tells him that she thought he had to pull the lever and he angrily says that he knows how to get a fish biscuit. She asks him to get her one. He asks if she is trying to make him feel productive.

Inside Jack is looking at the x-rays and medical file for Ben's back. He asks Juliet and Ben about the OR situation and what kinds of supplies are available. He asks if Juliet took all the blood tests and made all the notations and she says that she did. Finally he asks how old the x-rays are and she tells him they are a week old. Jack looks to Ben and tells him that at the rate his tumor is growing it is borderline operable in the x-rays and after about a week borderline goes away. He explains that he needed to be in surgery yesterday. Ben agrees and says he can have whatever he needs; he is ready now. Jack says that Ben doesn't understand. He isn't doing the operation he just wanted Ben to understand how he is going to die. Juliet begins to say something but Jack interrupts her, yelling. He says that they must think he is stupid to think that he believes he will do this and they will just let him go. Ben tells Jack that he is very disappointed and Jack says, "Well, Ben, at least you won't have to be disappointed for very long."
normal_ido-cap0082.jpg

I will smugly watch you die a slow and painful death.

Outside Danny/Pickett (Someone pick which name we are calling him) goes to Kate's cage and opens the door telling her that it is time to work. Kate asks about Sawyer and Danny says that he has the day off. Kate says that she isn't working if Sawyer isn't. Danny menacingly comments on this but Sawyer interrupts, telling her to go. Kate still refuses saying that they are a team; he breaks the rocks, she hauls them. Danny gives in and says that he wouldn't want to break up the team.

While Kate and Sawyer are working the speakers begin saying "compound breakthrough" repeatedly and Danny yells into his walkie-talkie asking where someone is and then orders Kate and Sawyer to get down on the ground. Danny then walks away saying, "Yeah, they're here. The doctor get out again? You sure? Well does he know? How the hell did she get over here?" (I think Alex has her own water transport) Alex pops up with a slingshot and shoots one man, knocking him down and then shoots another man while yelling at Kate and Sawyer to get up and run. Danny points his gun at Alex and asks her what she is doing. Alex asks if he plans to shoot her and Danny just tells her that she isn't supposed to be there. Alex then asks what they did to "him" and asks to talk to Ben. Danny says sure and starts to ask her to lower her slingshot but she just asks where "he" is. At that moment someone sneaks up behind her and grabs her. As they drag her off she looks at Kate and yells that she shouldn't listen to anything they say because they plan to kill Sawyer, just like they killed her boyfriend.
normal_ido-cap0188.jpg

Alex pwns with a slingshot.

As they get back to work Kate keeps watching Sawyer worriedly. She looks over and sees Danny arguing with Juliet, saying something about it was supposed to be two weeks. Once they finish Juliet walks over to Kate and asks her to put on a hood and come with her, she even says please. Kate asks her if she expects her to actually put the hood on just because she said please and Juliet says no, it is because Danny is going to kill Sawyer and if Kate comes with her she may be able to do something to save his life. Kate looks at Sawyer and then puts on the hood.

Juliet takes Kate in to the room opposite Jack's cage and then leaves them alone to talk. Jack asks her how she is doing and where they are4 keeping her and about Sawyer. She tells him that they are making them work on something big, but she doesn't know what it is. Jack asks if they hurt her and she begins to cry. (Is this about Sawyer or did something happen before she was put in the cage. Remember her wrists were bloody.) Kate calms down enough to talk and tells Jack that he has to do the operation. Jack looks at the camera and then back at Kate and asks what they did to her or offered her to make her do this and she said that they are going to kill Sawyer but Juliet told her that if he did the operation soon they would let them go. Jack is stomping around his cell by now and asks her if she believed them and she says that she has to. Jack says they are done and then looks at the camera yelling that they are done. Ben is watching on the monitors and tells Juliet to get her out of there.
normal_ido-cap0415.jpg

Baiting Jack just makes him angrier.

Juliet takes Kate back to her cage and Kate asks where Sawyer is. Juliet comments that she really cares about him and apologizes that Kate couldn't help them. Kate is starting to freak out when Danny and Sawyer come out of the jungle and Danny puts him in his cage. Danny takes a few cheap shots at Sawyer and Juliet reprimands him and he apologizes to Juliet, but not Sawyer. Before walking off Danny tells Sawyer that if he has anything he wants to say to Kate he had better say it tonight. After Danny and Juliet leave Sawyer looks over at Kate and says, "And how was your day, Honey?"

Kate explains to Sawyer that they took her to see Jack and to try and get her to convince him to do surgery on Ben. Sawyer, having never heard the name Ben, asks who that is and she explains that it is the man they knew as Henry. Sawyer says that he was glad Jack wasn't dumb enough to do the surgery and Kate says that she told him he had to because it was the only way she could save Sawyer's life. Sawyer says that he doesn't need saving, but Kate tells him that Danny wants to kill him, you can tell just by the way he looks at him. Kate begins climbing out of the top of her cage and Sawyer tells her to stay put but Kate tells him to shut up, calling him James, and says that if he doesn't want Jack to save his life then she will. Sawyer tries to get her to go back but she runs to his cage and breaks the lock open with a rock and tells him to run. Sawyer tells her that she is free and if she wants to run she can but he isn't because there's no place to go, they are on a separate island like Alcatraz and unless she is a mermaid or has a boat there is no where to go. Kate shoves him asking when he planned to tell her and he says never. He explains that he wanted her to think they had a chance. Kate kisses him. Sawyer asks what that was for and she says she doesn't know. Sawyer kisses her and then...You can see the picture.
Now all the women can quit debating who she chooses.

normal_ido-cap0644.jpg

Passion ignites.
Lost Media took screens of this scene nearly frame by frame - pervs.

Afterwards Kate and Sawyer are lying on the ground cuddling and Sawyer asks her if when "blockhead" was beating on her and she said that she loved him if it was really just to get him to stop. Kate doesn't say anything but kisses him. Sawyer says, "I love you, too." And it sounded completely awkward coming from Sawyer.

Inside Jack is sleeping in his cell when static from the communications box wakes him up. He goes over to it and asks who it is. The only response is "try the door." Jack goes to the door and finds it unlocked. He walks out into the hallway and wanders down to the observation room with all the monitors. He takes a quick look around and then notices a gun cabinet next to it in the hallway. He takes a pistol and makes sure it is loaded and then takes one last look around and is stopped by something he sees on one of the monitors. He sees Kate and Sawyer cuddle together naked, with only their clothes laying on them like blankets.
normal_ido-cap0763.jpg

Look for this video on Ben's blog.

Jack stares at the screen for a moment and is startled when a voice behind him says, "If it helps, I was surprised too." Jack spins around to find Ben standing there. He points the gun in Ben's face. Ben is completely unfazed and says, "If I were a betting man, I would have picked you and her." (I like the nod to the fans and message board speculations) Jack screams at Ben to shut up and Ben says that he supposes this would be the proverbially nail in his coffin. Jack lowers the gun and says that they will do the surgery first thing in the morning and he needs all the stuff he said before, including someone who can hold a clamp. Ben agrees, "Of course." Jack then tells Ben that he will get the tumor out and keep him alive but he needs what he promised him before, he needs to get the hell off this island. "Done," is all Ben says.
normal_ido-cap0793.jpg

Just click your heels together three times, remove my tumor, and say, "there is no place like home."

The next morning Jack and Juliet are scrubbing in for the operation and Jack tells her that this is going to be a complicated procedure and that he needs to know that when he asks her to do something she will do it. Juliet tells him that he may find it hard to believe but she is very good at following directions. Jack just asks her if that is a yes. She says it is and Jack says, "Good. Let's go."

In the operating room Ben is lying face down on the operating table being prepped by two nurses. Ben asks Jack if he gets nervous before surgery and Jack tells him that he used to, but not anymore. Up in the viewing room Tom, Danny, and a third man are watching. Ben comments that no matter what happens things will be very different and Jack says that there is no doubt about it. Ben then turns to Juliet and asks her if Alex asked about him she tells him no, that they took her home last night and she doesn't know where she is now. (What is Ben's relationship to Alex?) Then Ben says he will see them on the other side and that he is ready. Jack gives Ben the anesthesia and asks him to countdown from 20. Ben begins counting and doesn't get past 18. Jack asks Juliet for a scalpel and begins the surgery.

I'm ready.

In the viewing room Danny looks at the third man and asks him to come with him. As they are walking out the third man says that Ben just started surgery and Danny says that Ben just put his life in the hands of one of "them." Then as he draws his gun he says, "Shepard wasn't even on Jacob's list." (What the smoke monster?! Who the hell is Jacob? Anybody? And what is this list he has?) Danny goes out to the cages and finds Kate and Sawyer curled up together, dressed, in the rain. He comments on her getting out of her cage and then tells Sawyer to come with him. Kate jumps in his way trying to stop them.

In the OR Jack is working on Ben. He has Juliet swab for him and when she turns away to dispose of the gauze Jack looks around and then quickly grabs the scalpel and makes a cut. Immediately the heart monitor begins beeping rapidly. Juliet asks what happened and if he is OK. One of the nurses walks up and asks if he should be bleeding like that and Jacks says he shouldn't and then throws his elbow into the man's face. GO JACK!!! Jack then orders everyone back from the table and looks up at Tom and asks if he can hear him. Tom says he can and Jack says, "I just made a small incision in Ben's kidney sack. Now, if I don't stitch that up in the next hour, he's dead. Now get in here and bring that walkie talkie!"

I just grew a pair!

Outside Sawyer and Kate fight Danny and the other man. Eventually Sawyer gets Danny in a chokehold and the other man overpowers Kate. Danny tells Sawyer to let go or he will shoot her too. Kate tells Sawyer not to do it but Sawyer gives in. Danny takes him outside the cage and makes him get on his knees. Kate tells him not to do it, to stand up and fight. Sawyer gets on his knees and Kate yells that she will do anything Danny wants and he says that he wants her to watch. Then Danny cocks his gun and points it at Sawyer's head saying this is for Colleen.

Sawyer at gunpoint

Suddenly Danny's radio squawks with Tom yelling for him to pick up. Danny answers and asks what he wants. Tom asks if he is near the cages and he says that he is. Tom tells him to give his radio to Kate. Danny asks why he would do that and Tom tells him that if he doesn't the doctor is going to let Ben die. Danny hands Kate the radio and Kate yells for Jack. Jack takes Tom's radio and tells Kate that he has given her about an hour and she needs to go now. Kate tries to ask Jack where he is but he asks her if she remembers the story he told her when they first met and she was stitching him up on the beach. She says she does. He tells her that when she gets safe she radios him and tells him that story and if he doesn't hear from her he will know that something went wrong and Ben dies. Kate says that she can't leave without him and Jack says that she is and to go. She says she can't again and Jack yells, "Kate, damn it, run!"

To be continued…..In February. Go get some fresh air. Any shakes or odd twitches are normal. They'll go away in February.

First things first:
The story Jack was referring to is waaaay back in Ep 101: Pilot. Jack has a big gash on his back (but no scar now) and Kate has to sew him back together with a needle and thread. To calm her down Jack tells her about performing a surgery where he cuts open the spinal column and all the nerves poured out like spaghetti. YUMMY!

Now on to the discussions and questions:

1) Who is Jacob?
2) What is this list he has?
3) Who's giving me mad props for calling the prayer stick clue?
4) Do Kate and Sawyer get away?
5) Will a DHARMA shark eat them?
6) Who was Alex's boyfriend that they killed? (The guy in Ep. 1?)
7) What is Alex and Ben's relationship?
8) Did he kind of adopt a fatherly role for her?
9) Is it a crazy fatherly adopted/Woody Allen romantic relationship, which is why Juliet doesn't like Ben now?
10) Where is home for Alex? Otherville?
11) WTF is going on?

Discuss.

So I have called both the two islands and the prayer stick clue. 👍 Now, if only I had seen the sub coming.

Excellent write up FK. To be honest this episode wasn't the action packed hour of awesomeness I expected but it was still ok I guess.
