I don't know what happened, but my computer just went from 42Gb to 10Mb. But I haven't installed anything....

All I was doing was playing CS:S, when I decide to quit. I get this pop-up then, that says, "WARNING: LOW DISK SPACE". Google hasn't been helping, so I'm hoping someone here knows what the heck just happened. I did a disk clean up, but now I have 752Mb....

upon restarting, when the windows logo comes BACK up, hit F8 or F10 till the cow's come home... than you'll restore your computer ;) You really don't lose as much as you'd think...

None of my music was lost, just the random important files... lmfao

Try running CCleaner.

Or checking your temp files.

Virus scan.

Restore.

Somethings I do when my computer isnt working right.
Did a virus scan and didn't find anything, and currently running CCleaner. It's just strange. I wonder if it has anything to do with my CS:S suddenly slowing down for a minute before working again.
CCleaner only removed 3,510Kb....

Problem found.
I downloaded DiskView, and went through my computer when DiskView's Pie Chart showed that FRAPS had 97.1Gb. I looked in it, and nearly every video had 4,000,000KB. Deleting all the videos, I came back up to 133Gb of free space.

What on earth is FRAPS?

Its a game screen/ video capturing software.

Although now I can see the flaws of FRAPS. I did try to record a minute of my lap time on rFactor with FRAPS, the file was about 300+MB!! I don't understand why does it record so little, but uses up so much memory. Well *McLaren*, did you try to record yourself while playing CS:S? Also, how do you get to record the video? I did record it, but the video didn't appear (only sound), so do I need to get a codec for the video to work? What format did you use to convert your videos for hosting on youtube?

I you running vista by any chance?

Vista system restore backs up the entire contents of the HDD stupidly everyday so it doubles which is why you get a low disk error so fast. Go into system restore and delete every restore point except the last one and that will solve the problem..

Ive had some many people ask me why that happens and its always Vista system restore..

97 GB's of CS videos? :D

A good lesson learned would be to search for media files > 1000mb for example.

hey, thanks. now I know what to tell my cousin. they have a perpetual case of "out of disk space", with vista. thanks for that.
also, is XP vulnerable to that?

No, XP just backs up an image or a changelog file which is only afew 100KB's I think...

It meant that it was less effective at restoring than Vista but on the plus side it wasnt a pain in the *ss! You should always remove old restore points anyway after a while if they are not needed to free up disk space. :)

My guess is that the raw captures are stored in an uncompressed form, probably something proprietary, but similar to uncompressed TIFF. That way the program doesn't have to spend time and power with the extra step of compressing them into something like JPEG. It's busy enough as it is.. I see notes on Youtube all the time where people are pointing out that FRAPS is taking 10-15fps off of their usual play speed.

Let me give you an example... When I'm rendering files out of LightWave, I usually use TIFF for the raw renders, so I don't lose anything. I have one image I made a couple years ago. The TIFF file is 1280x960, the size is 3.5MB. The same image, converted to JPEG format for the internet, same dimensions, is only 182KB. That's around 5% of the original file size.

So, if you're using FRAPS to capture video at, say, 1024x768, that's roughly 2.3MB per frame... times, say.. 45fps. That's 103.5MB per second of video. 6.2GB per minute. 372GB per hour. It adds up really quick. Granted, those numbers may not be entirely accurate, depending on what formats FRAPS uses, but you get the idea... all those still-frames add up in a hurry.

Videos recorded with FRAPS use up so much space because the computer can not handle a game and compress a video file at the same time. Therefore, the video is saved uncompressed, which takes little processing time, but loads of space.

EDIT:
Jedi beat me to it by 3 minutes.

j/k mate! :P

You need download a codec as I had the same problem with GTR2. When my comp. gets done doing a disk clean up, I'll give you the download link I used to get the codec.

@Robin, no, I am not running Vista, just XP.
