Hi Guys, Ive just applied for a loan to buy a Mac Book Pro, as im sick on Windows and PC's altogether, The MBP Offers great speed, nice OS and the software that I want.

The reason for going for a loan is two things.

1) I get payed a fair amount and my out goings are minimal, so I have enough spare cash (around £900) a month, but Im saving to go out to South Africa doing wildlife conservation, so saving my money and then plumping for a £2000 laptop will smash my funds back a bit.

2) I WANT IT NOW :D

Im going for the top 17" MBP with 2GB of RAM (photo editing & music production) but also im going for the faster RPM HDD insted of the slow/more storage option.

I have read great things about MAC's and the Photo handeling, so im also ordering Apature 1.5 too (already have CS 2)

Do any of you guys have a new mac-tel? and more specificly one as the same config I described above?

also Do you guys know of any cheaper places to purchase a mac in the UK?

BTW im still getting my 400D next week ;)

I believe Event is the only one here with a MBP (15"), though there are several more of us who have Mactels; I personally have a MacBook. :)

BTW, good call on the RAM – you’ll absolutely love the machine with 2 gigs in it. Mine also has 2 GB in it, and it’s a very notable difference compared to the stock setup. Oh, and, don’t ever ever ever buy extra RAM from Apple – they charge a ransom for it. There are many third-party manufacturers that supply RAM for half the price that Apple charges (I bought mine from Newegg, though I can’t remember the brand name).

I always buy from the online Education store, but since you’re not a student anymore, you’ll just have to do a lot of price-comparing at the many online retailers (Small Dog Electronics, MacWarehouse, Mac Zone, MacConnection…).

Welcome to the family. :)👍

cheers, just talking to a mate of mine on MSN at the moment and hes been a mac boy ever since ive known him. I am getting to the point where I hate windows so much I hardly use my pc at all, and I know that linux is the way foward for pc's but unfortunatly the amount of time needed to get siple things working isnt for me.

mac is the only way to go and get away from the C$*P called windows :D

Sheesh, Macbook Pro, and Aperture 1.5, and Photoshop CS2? You need to share the goods. ;)

But anyway, there's several Mac users sprinkled around here, including Sage and myself, so if you ever have any questions, feel free to ask. :)

<-- 20" iMac (2.0ghz Core Duo) & Mac Pro (Quad 3.0 Xeon)

I've been a Mac user as long as I've used computers. Started with a IIe waaaay back in the day, and have had at least one since then. I do use Windows, and get along fine with it. But, for everyday use, its OSX all the way. The iMac is actually my wifes, the Pro is my normal machine, and I'm going to be getting a Mini once Leopard ships. Hopefully by then the Mini will have the Core 2 chips, and maybe a decent graphics solution. I want to use it, and Front Row, for a media center hub. We'll see what happens in the next few months.

ha ha ha yeh, its costing me an arm and a leg, but I think the end results will be worth it, this is my first major software and hardware upgrade in over 4 years so its money well spent, I hope.

Ohh by the way im also going to get a WD mybook premium 500B external HDD, to keep all that music and photos on, thus keeping my laptop HDD clean from cr*p.

Would you guys recomend safari or firfox on mac? as im used to FF on the pc and I like the extentions.

I don't think Firefox is as bad as it used to be, and I'm sure improvements have been made to the upcoming 2.0 release. However, I still prefer Safari as my main browser.

There is also Camino, which I use as my secondary browser. Check out all three and see which one you like best. As Duck said, if you have any questions feel free to ask. Also, be sure to check back when you get it, and we can give you some tips to get started with your new Mac. 👍

yeh thanks 👍 that why I love GTplanet, people are so nice. Ive heard of Camino, but it slipped my mind :dunce: will look into it, hopefully I should get the loan by the 20th of this month so couple of days after reciving the money I will have a brand spanking new macbook pro in my hands.

By now, all the kinks that I have in my MBP are probably ironed out with the new revisions. But I recommend it if you wanna use OSX.

After 6 months, I've decided OSX really isn't for me, a power user. Too many wierd quirks with it that makes stuff more difficult than it could be.

Oh, and I think my airport is broken...

BTW, congrats on the Macbook, Sage.

Wouldn't count on it.

One of my friends just got one, top of the line (best 15.4" anyways). Long story short, after about three weeks she had to send it back because her display went whack, and it was overheating like nobody's business.

I think Camino is trash. It seems incomplete and featureless compared to Firefox and Safari. I personally prefer Firefox 2 RC2, since it has the spellcheck, extensions, better bookmarks system, a much better "Find" function (CTRL or Command - F, depending what computer you're using), extensions, much better adblock, customizable search engines, and did I say extensions? I thought it looked ugly at first, but with the help of this guide, it pretty much pwns Camino and Safari combined.

I've also got a Macbook. It really is all about the RAM, so yours should run pretty damn fast. I've got 1 GB in mine, but I'd love to add another sometime in the future.

I personally just use Safari just because I don't see any reason not to. It's far superior to Microsoft's built in browser, that's for sure.

Hope you enjoy it! And you definitely will.

I wanna buy a Mac Book but not a Pro yet, still too expensive. Saving for my car and then this! w00t!

That's probably a smart idea. I don't know if you've read Event's post, but it took him 6 months to realize that OS X isn't for him.

Make sure you keep this into consideration when making your decision.

yeh Ive actually used OSX before, and I quite like the mac os, granted the quirks are a little weird sometimes, but I think that living with these and over coming them just takes time.

Im still waiting on the loan, but as soon as I get it, out goes all the pc stuff and a clean desk await the beast. :D

I guess even if you don't you can just run Windows on it with bootcamp.

I saw an MBP in person yesterday. Damn they're gorgeous... 17 inch with 2gb ram - really put my compaq to shame...

Yeah, I was really thinking about selling this PC I have now so I can get money for it... But I'd really want a good PC for gaming and maybe a project of some sort.
