Mafia 2 (demo is out for 360, PC, PS3)

This does look good. The era is perfect, and will aways be the coolest for gang stories in both film and games. What we need is a GTA-style game but a bit more serious and engaging, and this looks like delivering. I loved 'The Getaway' on PS2, because it had an edge to it that GT:Vice City (it's competitior at the time) lacked. And the developers Team Soho(London Studio) showed real guts by being the first (in my experience) to use the F-word in a way that mirrored how people talk in real life. Pity the sequel 'Black Monday' sucked.
Bring on Mafia II!

Ow yes the first Getaway game was brilliant. Not much freedom, but the script and action and cutscenes where brilliant.

I found it a shocker when the cutscene where a human was used as a boxingbag. That was quite sick.

I downloaded this earlier, I kind of thought it was 'meh'. The whole movement of the character felt a bit clunky and I found myself struggling to move around often hitting into items of the environment. I didn't care much for the mission, so much so I gave up with it and just mucked around (which essentially is what people do on these kind of games). The cars kind of feel awkward when driving them they don't seem to feel right in comparison to other games that I've played. I preferred GTA IV's physics. I also didn't like the way that the public didn't react to me holding the gun out at people, unlike GTA where people would but their hands up, these people would just carry on walking then a cop car would appear out of the middle of nowhere. The cops are ruthless on this game, not only does it take a short time for the pursuit to escalate from a 1 star chase to a 4, and then I died. Because they simply don't stop. Perhaps because I've been playing GTA recently I also missed the ability to shoot from inside the car.

On the plus side, the cars look great. The rest...not so much. It reminds me of Destroy All Humans (1) in terms of environments. I may play it again, the petrol station thing Tommi mentioned sounds interesting. Won't be buying it though.

This, with GTA physics would make this a must buy for me but I am not understanding these physics at all. I have played about 2 minutes of it but once I am finished here I will jump on and see what I can do. As Speedster said, the graphical detail of the cars is amazing!

EDIT: Ugh, so I was doing a speed run for the speed thread and the police jump to 3 stars, I shook them and somehow they still got me. Failed.

I will buy it when I get back from holidays. I love the demo. People, Mafia 2 is not your next free roaming game. It will be very scripted with beautifull cut scenes and dialogs. A game to be enjoyed on your own while zipping whisky in the evening.

Everyone who likes gangster movies will buy this game.

Exactly this. Also, this game is probably going to be a lot longer than GTA IV and maybe even have more things to do then GTA San Andreas. From what I've heard the original Mafia was long as heck. One of my neighbors played it a lot and had it for like 2 years and he never beat it 100%.

I'm just excited to think there is a game coming out that will offer a huge variety of things to do, just like GTA San Andreas, for this generations consoles.

Running through demo game w/ physx on high. everything maxed. tried to shoot my buddies, but it wouldn't let me. :/ its still procesing, so quality is not good, but it should be in a few minutes.

This might just be the best demo i've played on PS3. I've played it for hours and I now love the Simulation physics. Took some getting used too but now it feels natural.

you can change driving physx to "simulation" i just noticed this in options

I noticed that before I played the game, on the main menu.

Anyway got any fun things to do in the demo? Or a way to breach the demo timer for PS3 like you could with Just Cause 2.

EDIT: The fat guy got OWNED!

EDIT 2: What a cliff hanger!

Like the demo, kinda better than GTA4 for me. The city looks better, gameplay more realistic and driving is better.
Pity you can't go into the water!

PS3 version is a bit jagged and framerate not that smooth...

PC version much better, and surprisingly smaller. Anyway seems like there is already an update for the demo on steam

I put a nvidia 9600gt in my rig as a dedicated physx card to assist my ATi 5850, and now I am getting over double the average framerates :D so i can run physx on high easily along with everything else! Love ati! so if you are an ati user, you can slap in a cheap nvidia card if you have a lot of physx games.

YouTube- MAFIA II PWNT HIGHLIGHT.avi

YouTube- Mafia II Benchmark Physx High run.avi

the game should have a 4x AA option... 2x isnt enough

Nice to see Gabbicks.
As you have nearly the same specs as mine i can expect it runs also 30+ fps on mine on high settings.
(got a 280gtx + 10gb ram)
Did you OC you 920?

I so can't wait to buy this game. I played the demo on my PC somehow with my specs. Managed to make it through the demo the first time. Just crashes after a few minutes now of trying to explore things. Runs really slow obviously but I plan to upgrade my computer hopefully within the next two weeks.

I take that back, Mafia 2 looks pretty good on the PS3 and runs well enough. It looks about the same as my PC

Given that my PC is a 4 ghz i930 self built quad core 12gb machine at 5x the price of the PS3, It barely gets over 20fps.... I think I need a video upgrade, ATI radeon 4670 here

The 4670 is more of a lite-gaming, HD video card.

beat the game, ending was kind a meh. game needs a dedicated physx card if you are using ATi to run w/ maxxed out physx, or a higher end nvidia card. Funny thing is, the game still runs off the CPU for the clothing.

I Finished it also, felt a bit like a prologue though. Way too short, bummer you cannot roam when done.

I am running at @ 3.8ghz. The game runs clothing and other things off of cpu phsyx reguardless of if you have a dedicated physx card or not, it seems.👎

i still not done with the game
chapiter 14

got mine OC'd at 3.3 (166mhz*20) and the benchmark gives me a D but an average of 36fps :D but the games runs +- smooth enough

heard about the ending being "meh" but till now it's great fun

Love Joe the drunk

This game must be one of the biggest cock teases in gaming history. Promised everything, delivered not much. The story is as cliche as you like, and the glitches and graphical issues are pretty bloody pathetic. Now they're releasing DLC that was already in the game to try and make some money out of this sinking ship. I hoped when 2k took over they wouldn't rape and pillage the game so that they could extruded every last cent out of it but it seems I was so very wrong. I'd trade this game in, but its worth more to me owning it then i'll get for it.
Want to see what was left out, google the real mafia 2 wiki.

It was on sale on PSN last week and i picked it up for 7 bucks. An undiscovered gem indeed! Graphics are so pretty and atmospheric, story is top notch and i love collecting those vintage playboy pinups too :D

Character of Vito is also cool, and it's nice that the weather changes each time you get to a new chapter + there's the storyline in 1945 in the snow and the one in 1951 in the spring. Prefer this above GTA5 actually, i think in GTA5 i lost touch with the characters because there's 3 of them so you bond less emotionally and they weren't as convincing neither, a bit cheesy sometimes.

Looking forward to Mafia 3 and i hope it will be like 2.
