Big hits and big plays are made in baseball... even when no one is playing. Sometimes, the off-season can be just as competitive as the regular season. This thread is to discuss all the off-season moves as well as look forward to the upcoming 2015 season. So if you're willing to discuss the off-season and think about Spring Training for 2015, here is your thread. Have at it.

Stanton signs 13 year, $325 Million contract with the Marlins. I hope for the Marlins sake this is NOT a backloaded contract (unless Stanton is an idiot).

A Double helping of stuffing for the Boston Red Sox this week. They have signed both SS Hanley Ramirez (Los Angeles Dodgers) for 5 years and $80 million. They have also signed 3B Pablo Sandoval (San Francisco Giants) for 5 years and approximately $100 million.

Any GTP baseball guys want to weigh in on the Jays signing Martin and trading for Donaldson? I know I'm supposed to feel bad because Lawrie was the Canadian future of the team but from what I've read about Donaldson it seems like a huge upgrade.

With Martin I just wonder about age, that seems like a lot of money to put on a guy on the wrong side of 30. Then again maybe it's just me not being as acquainted with aging curves in baseball, in hockey putting 5 years and big money on a 31 year old is a huge risk unless he's a top tier all star.

The year is 2009.... wait, no it's not. Forgive me for being confused since that's the last time these 3 teams had a deal together.

Detroit trades RP Robbie Ray to Arizona, New York Yankees trade SP Shane Greene to Detroit, Arizona trades SS Didi Gregorius to New York.

And now Montero to the Cubs. Let's just get rid of all our well known players and start fresh shall we?

Except for Goldy, he can stay right? Or maybe let's get rid of him too and piss off all our fans...

We'll give you Duda and Syndergaard for Goldy. Deal

No backsies .

Looks like the Cubs "won" free agency by signing Lester to a 6-year, $155m contract.

Max Scherzer is looking for a $200m contract.

I feel like the Cubs are trying their best to make this actually happen:

2015 is the year...

Astros will gladly take Goldschmit back in exchange for Singleton and a potato to be named later.
Wouldn't surprise me with the new management and their need to ruin their fan base. And apparently a 5 year contract doesn't mean squat.

The Reds traded Alfredo Simon to the Tigers for Minor League pitcher Jonathon Crawford and infielder Eugenio Suarez. Simon had an incredible season last year, and there's no way he can repeat that. He's also getting up there in age, so I'm fine with the trade. I don't know anything about Crawford, other than he was a first round pick so has some promise. Suarez apparently batted .242 in 85 big league games. I guess he's a step up from Cozart? Thoughts, @AnthonyD1993?

We also shipped Mat Latos off to the Marlins, likely making @Omnis a happy man. I really liked Latos, but we do need some cash. Four of our starters would have been free agents at the end of this year, including Latos and Simon (I'm afraid to find out what Cueto will be asking for by season's end. He may be a goner, but I sure hope not.). In the Marlins deal, the Reds acquired pitcher Anthony DeSclafani and minor league catcher Chad Wallach. I really know nothing about either player. DeSclafani did make his Major League debut last year, with a 6.27 ERA in 13 appearances to show for it.

Despite all this, we still haven't solved a large issue...a left fielder. I hope Jocketty has something up his sleeve. But knowing how the Reds have been over the past few winters, I'm sure nothing will happen.

I've learned to always hold judgement on trades until games are played. The only thing I'll say is this- Boston should have a decent starter on their hands with Rick Porcello. However, the guy had a tendency to be really streaky- when he was pitching well, he could easily get on a roll. But when he was bad, he flat sucked like no other. He had a pretty decent season this year though so he should be good to Boston.

Mat who? I don't really care. All I know is Latos's wife is a whore. And he better wear long sleeves because those tattoos are a disgrace to the game.

edit: Ooh! Ooh! We got Dee Gordon.

Boston got something out of Cespedes. Since he will not get a DP compensation due to the unusual contract at the end of 2015.

The Houston Astros officially introduced two new relief pitchers recently- Luke Gregerson and Pat Neshek. I just hope they can be good bullpen help and relief pitching along with the likes of Tony Sipp and company.

That hasn't worked for Detroit or the Dodgers, so it probably won't work for SD either.

As usual, the Reds are trading away their players and continuing to ignore left field. Nothing new.

On this day in 1973, the MLB owners voted to include the Designated Hitter position to the American League.

Over the weekend the Tampa Bay Rays traded 2B Ben Zobrist and SS Yuniel Escobar to Oakland for INF Daniel Robertson, C John Jaso and OF Boog Powell.

The deal was possibly going to include the Nationals and the Mets, provided that the Nationals sent SS Ian Desmond to the Mets and the Mets sent P Noah Syndergaard and OF Brandon Nimmo to Tampa Bay/Oakland, but the Mets soured on the deal.

We shipped off Dexter Fowler recently to the Chicago Cubs. Even more recently, Colby Rasmus joined the Astros lineup. I think the Astros are sick of mediocrity and are looking to play with purpose and firepower. About damn time. I hope we can only get better after last season's 71-win season.

I'm so thankful that the Tigers didn't get saddles with the money pit that is Max Scherzer. Sure Scherzer is a fantastic pitcher, but there's no way he's a $210 million pitcher over the course of 7 years (or I guess 14 years). His mechanics are sort of odd and I fully expect him to blow his arm out in the next 2-3 years.

I'm upset that the Tiger's let Don Kelly go, despite not being very good he was still my favorite Tiger.

In addition to the Astros getting these recent players, I hear that we may even pick up Ryan Vogelsong of the San Francisco Giants. It would add some extra firepower to the Astros' pitching rotation should we get Vogelsong. He is a pretty good pitcher, so I would be excited for him to join our rotation.
