So, my Samsung 17" CRT is dying. It flickers sporadically and turns everything a light shade of turquoise when it feels like it. My eyes hurt. :grumpy:

I've been looking at Newegg all day trying to decide which LCD monitor to buy, but there are just way too many choices. What should I be looking for when buying an LCD monitor? Dead pixels? Response time? Ghosting? Huh?

I'm probably going to go with a 17" again and am hoping to keep it under $250. ANY help would be much appreciated.

You can get a downright awesome 19" monitor for $265 with $10 shipping.

I know you want to look for a low response time, 8ms is perfect for gaming but you'll pay more for it.

Thats about as far as my knowledge goes. I have that monitor and a friend of mine has two of them. We both love them and are very happy we got them.

Yep i'd advise getting a 19" LCD over 17" LCD too. My parents have a 17" connected to their PC and i have 19" connected to mine. They both run at the same resolution of 1280x1024 but the 17" displays it in a smaller area so IMO everything looks cramped. On my 19" i get 1280x1024 but it's nicely spread out and everything is easy to read. The screen is actually so big on the 19" that i have to move my head to look around!
Will look for a few good bargains later :)

I've got a LG Flatron 17" with a 12ms response time and I game all the time. At first you may notice a bit of ghosting, but in a week or so you won't notice a damn thing. Don't be afraid to save a bit of cash and go with a 12ms LCD.

I'd highly recommend a Samsung monitor, even if they cost a little more than the others. I have the Samsung SyncMaster 913B myself (19" 8ms) and it's great. A lot of people rave over the Hyundai L90D+ (which uses a Samsung panel anyway), and that monitor VTGT07 linked to does look nice, but I've never had any problems with Samsungs and they have and awesome dead-pixel warranty.

Basically, if it has an 8ms response time you should be good. You can get 4ms and even 2ms monitors, but the colour quality is lacking on those. 8ms gives you an optimum quality/speed ratio (and there's no ghosting, so they're perfect for gaming).

:)

Are Viewsonic's good? I'm planning on getting a LCD since my 19" CRT crapped on me back on Friday. I currently using this pos 17" crt. I hate it. Everythings blurry and dark.

The Samsung SyncMaster 913N is one hell of a monitor, it has an excellent picture and an 8ms panel. Also due to the fact that it doesn't have a DVI connection it is now quite cheap.

Thanks for all the great feedback, guys. 👍 👍

So, after browsing for the last hour or so I've narrowed my choices down to the following:

Shannon - I looked at the Samsungs, but the ones I liked were a bit out of my price range. :(

antihero - Same as with what I said to Shannon. LG has some great looking monitors, but the ones I like are a bit pricey. For example, I really like this one, but it's 17", has a Response Time of 12ms, and costs $263.99.

Tell me what you guys think. I'll keep looking around in the meantime.

I honestly wouldn't go with a 17" LCD. Unlike CRT monitors, LCD monitors can't really go above 1280x1024 so to be honest, bigger is better in the LCD market.

My parents have a 17" LCD and that thing is tiny compared to my Sceptre. Everything is so much smaller on a 17" LCD than it is on a 19". It'll be a whole lot easier on the eyes.

The Hyundai one looks nice, but how are you supposed to control the contrast and so on? There's no buttons on it. On the upside, Hyundai do you use Samsung panels, as I stated earlier.

Any chance of spending a few more dollars on the L90D+ ($289.99)?

Wow. I'm still alittle confused as to what to look for when buying a LCD. This is my first time really looking at LCD's and its a bit confusing. lol. I thought about Samsungs but the ones I like on Newegg cost to much for me. The Hyundai's look good. That L90D+ got a few wierd reviews on Newegg. This ViewSonic looks nice. Its a good thing the tax check doesnt arrive for another 2 or 3 weeks. I'm gonna need that time to decide. :)

Why I looked at them in the first place. Thanks! :)

Nah, I actually like the B90A better and am probably going to order it tomorrow night.

Viper_Maniac - That ViewSonic is nice, I was looking at that one, too.

Thanks to everyone that replied and helped me out. I seriously appreciate it. 👍 👍

i highly suggest u try to take a look at the moniter at a electronics store before u buy it online. there are huge differences in display quality among different brands of LCD's. have u tried looking into dell moniters. i believe dell uses samsung moniters.

Swap the B90 for a Hyundai L90D+. It costs a touch more, but it has a better build quality, a height adjustable stand, and the reviews claim that it gets better performance :

Shannon has already suggested this, twice.

But yeah, I'm really liking the B90A and have already placed the order. Thanks, though.

FaLLeNAn9eL - I've tried checking it out at a store before placing the order, trust me. I've looked at:

  • Best Buy
  • Staples
  • OfficeMax
  • CompUSA
  • Fry's

NO ONE sells this particular model.

but...but... tilt AND height adjustability!!! That's like mandatory if you plan on sitting close to the monitor or else the colors go all funky if you can't get the right viewing angle.

Anyways, enjoy the new monitor 👍

Yeah .. retail stores only sell the brand name models. However, many of the not-so-brand name models ( aka Hyundia and Sceptre ) produce superior monitors.

Dell monitors are good, but they're over priced. I'd rather stick with my good old Sceptre :D.

Get the monitor yet tabs? I've been looking at the Hyundai L90D+(I know its not the one you got but its a Hyundai) and just wandering if you like it.

I just hope the L90D+ will be good for gaming.

So, I’ve been using the monitor for the last 2 weeks or so. I intentionally waited this long to post in case anything came up.

For the most part, it’s been pretty awesome. It looks great (I love how slim it is) and the colors are very nice/vibrant (not too bright or anything like that). Another thing I really like is the fact that the buttons are on the back of the monitor; that, in addition to the thin border around the screen makes it look very slick.

However, it did come with 1 stuck pixel (a green one). I've tried a few things, but no luck... It's hardly a problem most of the time so I guess it's all right.

Again, thanks to everyone that posted and helped me out.
