Making a ferrari

Oh well... I'm sure it can be done but there is one small problem.

How does the Ferrari handle? :p
 
I think you're pretty much there with the Spirra, at least I can't think of a better choice in terms of figures, layout and looks at the moment. When it comes to a setup though, that's a different story. I suppose that just putting in the original Ferrari figures won't be satisfactory, cause GT4 is more about the differences between cars than a 100% spot on natural handling.
If I were to make a 360 Modena copy, I'd equip the Spirra with some advanced or semi racing stuff and set it up so that it handles like you think the Ferrari does. In my book, that'd mainly be a very good balance when cornering, revving up vigorously (do some NA tuning, but not too much!) and a good sound (buy a racing exhaust!). Maybe I'll do some tests and post a setup here. Nice idea by the way! :sly: 👍

Okay, I'll be off to the F1 qualifying in a few minutes, but this is how far I got already:
  • I bought a ProtoMotors Spirra in red (obviously)
  • I searched the internet for the specs of the Ferrari 360 Modena (and found them here)
  • I searched rims that look as close as possible to the original 360 rims, and found the following: OZ 006, Enkei 024/048, Rays 008, Yokohama 013/015. I think it will be the Enkei 048, the Rays 008 or the Yokohama 015.
  • I noticed that the 360 Challenge Stradales rims are the BBS 018, so if you're up to make that one, buy those

I'll continue after the qualifying! 👍

I'm not sure if I should say this, but I think the Honda NSX is there as well. It's not a V8, but it is high revving.

Yeah, I'd like to see how this turns out. I can't help much, having never driven a 360, but I would certainly test the final results! 👍

Okay, I think I'm done with the Spirra. And it comes surprisingly close if you ask me. But for the beginners, here's some general information.

The task is to copy the Ferrari 360 Modena. For that, we need a mid-engined car that kind of looks like a 360, has a fairly high revving, spicy V8, drives very nicely and mostly neutral and is not too hard. SUROIKA, who had the idea for this, came up with the ProtoMotors SPIRRA, which is one of the few very close choices. It is available in red, comes with a V8 which is bigger than the 360s, but has less power. That's an advantage actually, because we can tune it to give us the 400hp the 360 has and make it more furious at the same time.
The Spirra drives fairly nice from the start. Only the brakes are a bit weak, and it has a fair, but controllable amount of lift off oversteer - nothing we can't handle.

Here are my upgrades and settings for the Spirra:
  • Enkei 048 rims
  • Semi-racing exhaust (great sound, thanks SUROIKA!)
  • NA stage 1
  • sports suspension (all stock)
  • Sports flywheel
  • Port polish
  • Engine balancing
  • Weight (plus 200 at the middle)
  • Medium sports tires for the back, the front gets hard ones
  • Upgraded computer type
  • Oil change after at least 30 miles / 50 kilometres
Looking at the figures, it comes very close to the 360. And it drives really well, revving up to screaming 7250rpm. I was hoping to get it up higher with the engine balancing, but it wouldn't. You can rev it to the limiter cleanly though. And you should make an oil change after some miles to gain the hp we need to reach 400. I think we won't quite get there, but like I said, the figures already fit very well.
Remember, this is no bone-shaking race car, it's "only" a very quick sportscar. Feeling-wise, I think this comes very close to the 360. Now, I'm gonna try the Honda NSX also.

It'd be nice if you copy this and tell me what you think. Of course, improvements are very welcome.

My Spirra has 396hp with a chip. It really depends on how much more hp it will gain through driving, but you can definitely level performance with that chip.

Here are my results with the NSX. I bought the standard model and did the following to it:
  • Enkei 048 Rims
  • Racing exhaust
  • NA stage 2
  • Semi-racing flywheel
  • Port polish
  • Engine balancing
  • Weight (plus 185 at the middle)
It's nice also, but not quite as much there as the Spirra is. The figures fit as well, but the NSX still feels too much Honda and not enough Ferrari. So, the Spirra with the described changes (I just added soft sports tires for the back by the way) is my recommendation. The NSX feels too artificial to match a lively prancing italian horse.

I bought one, it does sound the best with the semi-racing exhaust. It needs a better clutch so the gears change nice and hard/direct!
What time does the 360 manage on the Nurb? I want to make this Spirra do the same.
 
looks- and performance wise I'd say that Tommykaira ZZ-II is closer to a ferrari.. but, awd and turbocharged inline 6 don't fit into ferrari.. too bad, because this car could whoop any Ferrari if it would had gone production as it is.. but instead it came out as ASL Garayia..
 
@ James: I intentionally left that out, because I didn't want to make it too sharp. The Ferrari has one of those beautiful open metal gear shift thingys you can't change gear very quickly with. So, I left the standard clutch in. I don't know what the cars will do on the Ring, but I'll give the Spirra a shot.

EDIT: I just found the info that the 360 Modena does an 8:09 on the ring. I think the Spirra will be faster in the game.

@ Leonidae: I agree, but AWD and a Turbo I6 are not really there. It's a shame it never went into production, but actually, that's not the subject here.

Yeah I'd just assumed Ferrari's have a fast gear change - don't worry about a better clutch if they have a flappy-paddle job or something that takes a little while! I only put in a single plate anyway, I don't want it to be a race-car or anything.

I also enjoy the tires on medium sports rear and hard sports on the front - I like to feel a little more dangerous! Maybe just leave the rears on hard sports so it can poke the rear out easier like they did with the 360 on Top Gear! They seem to just powerslide everything on that show!

Edit: I looked up the Ferrari 360 time for Nurburgring, not sure if its accurate or not but the info I found is listed as 8:09 --- averaging 151.656 km/h -- Ferrari 360 Modena , 400 PS/1464 kg (sport auto magazine 10/99).
 
I had a couple of clean runs at the Nurb and I got 8:01 and then 7:50 with Interceptor's settings, but with hard sports all round. Any more grip and it would be too fast, however I realise you can drive a bit faster in GT4 than what is possible in real life!

Seems like a good Ferrari copy - same top speed on the test track too! 308 km/h. I'm sure that GT4 cars can always reach higher speeds than in real life though - this is because our car doesn't quite have the same hp as a real 360, but at least it seems to drive like it does!

About 13 secs on the quarter mile, disturbingly similar to my ultra NOS-ed up old school Beetle!

I'm running it without the chip at the moment, and it's a peach. Sounds great, handles really nicely - a real "one more lap" car :)

Haven't had a clean run at the 'ring yet, but round Infineon and Tsukuba (2 of my other favourites) it's great fun.
 
Holy hell, this thing drifts very quickly on Sport Softs on El Capitan Reverse... (Dream Car Championship). It races perfect grip driving, but then when you step on the brakes hard and attack violently, it really drifts beautifully and somehow seems to retain speed on those long sweeping bends! A very ridge racer moment! :)

I originally put on the sport softs to try and keep up with the other cars in the race (all racing cars). I'm gonna tune this car to try and win that dream car El Capitan reverse track... its SOO fun, the perfect car for the track.

Its amazing how a nice smooth track (as opposed to the Nurb) can really settle the car down and make it a lot more predictable and comfortable at quite severe sideways angles! It still bites like a MR car will, but you have to be doing something pretty insane!
 
I did some races with the car, and I found it to be a bit stumpy and skittish at times, obviously a suspension problem. But I didn't want to go for the racing suspension, cause I don't want this to be a race car. So, I tried the semi-racing one, and it worked really well. It still is a sporty, yet soft ride, but it has become less nervous and more forgiving. However, this is an agile car, and I think we've gotten closer to the "superb handling" every journalist mentioned after driving a 360. You'll find the new upgrade in my original post about how to setup the Spirra.

EDIT: and I upgraded the brakes as well.

Just to add, the new setup is excellent (without the upgraded brakes) - much more stable around the Nurb, previously I found it very twitchy and difficult to control, now it's much better. Good work once again :D

Oh, and although the ZZ-II doesn't fit the Ferrari, it's given me an idea for a similar project. Just a shame it hasn't got a V10 ;)

Has anyone tried to turn the Cizeta into a Testarossa? the engines are quite different - V16 compared to a Flat 12 - but the styling is close enough.

Hmm, sounds like a project for sunday afternoon! :)

edit: seems the Testarossa is somewhat underpowered against the Cizeta - 390hp to 560hp, but the ferrari is almost 100kg lighter, so I might make one up and pretend it's a 'super modified' version of the TR521M, which had around 440hp ;)
 
wow this thread turned out REALLY WELL!. i thought it would be a **** fight but the support this project has recieved is unbelieveable

i have a replay i made in myne and it sounds exactly like a 360 or 430 like in the 430 topgear episode Episode S6E08 when he saws "and listen, to this noise,," and it goes past and changes gear...it sounded EXACTLY like that

Well, a Ferrari is no pussycat, but I found it to be too bumpy around the Nurb as well.

I'd say turn the Cizeta into a Lamborghini Diablo, and the RUF RGT into a 911 XXX. Let's see ... :trouble:

EDIT:
The RGT is in check with the 996 911 GT3. Unfortunately, we already have too much power for that (RGT = 385hp, GT3 = 381hp), but the RGT seems to be a bit slower, so that's not a problem. Now, the task with this is to make it a real driving machine, that sticks to the road, is fairly hard and damn quick on the track. I'm working on it ...
