I was introduced to the game by my Uncle, GT5 being the first of the series ive played (Have played some GT4) now.

I feel im a fairly competent driver, have attained gold on all the licence tests and A-spec events aside from Formula GT and Dream Car (Im level 23).

However, it is my opinion that i am being held back somewhat by the use of Automatic (duh) and am going to make the move to manual tonight.

Are there any tips for using MT over Automatic, or any ways to smooth the transition. For example, will i want to shift up just before I red line, or drop gears in the corners to give me more power out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Buy yourself a Civic Type R, and head to a track where you are comfortable. The Honda's transmission is easy and quick, and it's quite an enjoyable drive. Besides, I'm in the same boat right now. Switchin' over.

Aye, i hopped in my untuned Sileighty and took it to DFR and set some hot laps, now im going to change to manual and see if i can beat my times.

Good luck to you as well pal.

I made the switch during GT4 and can't stand driving an automatic now. Upshift usually at redline, but really it depends on the car and the track situation (sometimes it's better to just ride a gear out if a corner's coming up soon). You'll also usually want to downshift at a corner, but again that depends on the track situation and the car you're driving. As you practice you'll get used to it :)

Seems to be becoming more... subconcious now.
Finding myself doing it without thinking, other times I have to flagellate myself for failing to do it properly though.

Atleast im getting there.

I have always used manual transmission.

For some reason the Auto boxes on games really hang onto gears long after they should have changed up. I don't know why.

I don't know if I am faster using manual but it's a lot more enjoyable and immersive.

GT5 tells you which gear to choose when approaching a corner. It's usually right.

Yeah ive been using that to shift as needed, hoping it will become more instinctive as i get used to driving the tracks using Manual. I do agree with your point about it being alot more immersive.

Theres also quite a few corners where shifting down during braking and leaving it in the power on a low gear seem to give a much better speed both in and out of the corner.

I switch to automatic when i am driving a car that uses one (Lancer Evo VII GT-A or GT-R Concept 2001) and put it on manual when driving a manual.

A good way to learn manual is to just practice. Get a feel for when the best shift point is, and normally shift down enough to have your revs right in the powerband of your car to get the most power going out of a corner.

Tips:
Do not shift down if it will put you near the red line. This will waste more time on shifting.
Do not shift up right before a turn. Again, it will waste more time on shifting and chances are you'll have enough of a red line to be able to keep from shifting right before the turn.
Also, practice a lot. Getting a feel for when shifting is necessary will take time. Only practice will allow you to get the proper feel.

That sounds painful and erotic at the same time :scared:

Heh.

Ive been practising with it for quite a while now, did about 20 laps in the Civic getting 1.24.1 or so. Switched to Manual, done about 20 more laps now and times have fallen to 1.23.4, im loving the peaky power delivery out of corners and i feel im getting much better at judging when to change gear on my own rather than just blindly following orders.
Staying in the lower gear even thought youre at redline or there there abouts just as your climbing a hill is also awesome.

Id recommend switching to Manual to everyone, it isnt too hard to pick up and i was mainly worried about having to spend days practising to get it right but after the initial arsing about and silly mistakes it feels really natural.

Thanks to everyone who posted a wee bit of advice.
