NEW YORK (AP) -- A man jumped to his death Friday from the 86th-floor observation deck at the Empire State Building, one of Manhattan's busiest tourist destinations, police said.

The apparent suicide forced police to briefly close the landmark on Fifth Avenue to tourists in New York for the holiday weekend.

The man apparently climbed over a security fence that encloses the observation deck before leaping off.

He hit a landing on the sixth floor, where he died instantly, police said.

No identification was found on his body.

At least 31 other people have committed suicide at the Empire State Building since it opened in 1931.

More than 3.8 million people visit the tourist attraction each year, according to the building's Web site.

It is 1,454 feet to the top of the Empire State Building's lightning rod.

Ouch.

But who is going to stop him? I sure wouldn't want to get dragged over the fence with him...

And of course, he probably chose an area where there were not too many people so he would not be impeded.

Don't the amount of suicides around the holidays triple or something?

EDIT: After a brief google investigation, It only seems that way. The amount of suicides are fairly even throughout the year.

Well i know i'd be freaked out if a guy jumped in front of me and i did nothing.

I would want to be done with it (death) quick. Although, falling to death might be cool. You'd have all sorts of adrenaline in you before you died.

To be honest i didn't think there had been any deaths there as i've seen pics of the security fences and thought that there would at least be guards there just in case.

There is a website which more than likely has pics of such a thing. I'm not going to mention it here however. Never been there, never wantto go there.

I'm sure it'd look worse than pics they have of Kurt C.'s head aftermath.

I do NOT reccomend nor will I mention where I saw them either. They too are gruesome and show the power of a shotgun.

Poor guy. You think after that many suicides, EVEN after 5, they would have fences that bend towards you so it makes it extremely hard to climb over.

Well, just yesterday i was waiting at the trainstation for the train to arrive and out of nowhere a women jumps onto the rails and just stands there waiting for the train to hit her.I was running like crazy to get her off the rails.Luckily the train engineer managed to stop the train in time.A few minutes later some of her relatives arrived and said that she was mentally handicapped and that she had escaped from the clinic she was residing at .
That was so weird to see.Somebody who wants to end their life, their only life.

Seek help.

What does your body look like after falling 86 storeys?

A lacerated, deflated bag of skin and a lot of stuff that needs shovelling.

I've also been to a website showing various gruesome pictures of dead people (gunshots to the head, victims of explosions, and so forth), and I would not highly recomend visting such a site. Probably the sickest, most disturbing, most depressing thing I've ever seen on the internet. And that was many years ago I visited the site, yet it still sticks out in my head because I can't comprehend why anyone would want to run such a website.

This will sound really sad and disgusting but....

When you hit is it head first, Stadning up or lying down? I can just imagine landing feet first and having your shins imbeded in you skull. :irked:

I'm phoning a phyciatrist.

Only 31 in 73 years? Doesn't sound like many. Thought there'd be more. I heard the Effiel (sp) Tower gets about 4 suicides a year. And why chose the Empire State Building? There must be other buildings that'd be easier to jump off.

Because you get people on here talking about it...duh! :dopey:
Ever seen a thread on suicide off teh Eiffel Tower?

j/k
The Eiffel tower has pretty good security at the top. Also who would want to commit suicide in such a great place?

It was probably some BASE jumper.

The last guy to jump off did it in February of this year. He jumped from the 80th floor minutes after filling out a job application.

Did he get hired?

:p

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if he did...

My grandfather, who has been dead for well over a year now, was called for jury duty last month!

It's a valid question. Most likely, unless you made a conscious effort to orientate yourself, it'd be lying down, due to "physics".

Well you can survive a fall from any height if you are lucky/unlucky enough.
Only if you land on something soft :sly:
The guy who jumped from the Empire state building didn't land on anything soft
