So I just started using the manual transmission yesterday, I'm actually getting used to it after being stuck on automatic since GT3. Although, I still feel that I need more practice (obviously). For example, when I shift down, sometimes I shift too much or too little and the car starts going slower than it should, leading to me not winning the race. Also, when I shift up, should I wait until the car starts getting stuck, or just a little through the red area? Anyway, I'm just looking for some basic advice on how to drive manual on GT5. Thanks!

It's usually a good idea to look at the dyno results in the car settings to see how much torque you are getting at what RPM's. Avoid redlining the car as you will lose precious torque and bhp from this. And when you are shifting down, try to shift down at a certain RPM to make sure that you don't it the rev limiter when shifting down, or letting the RPM's drop down too much. Experiment and see what works best for you. That's all I can say on how to get used to a manual transmission really.

EDIT: I will admit that I do like redlining cars, but only for the sound :D .

Thanks, i'll take a look at the dyno results, and also try not to redline the car.

And :p

If you've got SSRX, you can test out what RPMs are the best to shift at. The premium Lancia's peak torque is at 3500, with hp at 5500, yet the car is fastest when taken to redline.

I was once like you hah but don't worry you will get the hang of it soon. But once you do get the feel for downshifting, try heel/toe downshifting while modulating the brakes (not just firm steady braking but actual modulating) with one foot at the same time and tell me how hard it is. It's like trying to play the guitar and sing at the same time which is nearly dam impossible for me hah

Unfortunately I don't have SSRX :S
I am glad you are attempting to learn MT.

What exactly inspired you?
People say it's faster, said to myself "guess i'll try it out" :p

I'm using a DS3 :)

All the fears of MT are most severe the first day or two. You think to yourself:

1. How can I keep shifting so much? This is so annoying!

2. What if I shift down/up too much? I will lose time!

3. I don't feel faster....This sucks.

These fade away with practice. Keep at it.

Just listen to the engine, that's what I do. When you hear the engine's rev's get louder shift up. On gt5, use the suggested gear indicator on the tach, brake and downshift until you hit the suggested gear.

It's just a matter of feel/hearing for me...and practice. Nothing was better than the day it really kicked in and I got 'it', that is, changing from auto to manual. And the results on the track are in a lot of cases so much better.

Oh, and practice. And again. Without worrying about results. Once they start coming, there'll be no stopping you. DS3 here also.

With the I don't feel faster.....This sucks, I think that has almost gone away, since I used automatic for a race one more time, I felt kind of slower.

That's what I've been doing, though I let it go a little past the normal GT5 point to shift up on automatic.

Thanks, I'm getting a little bit used to it, thought I was on a manual when I switched to auto once :p
