Manual Shifting Help with 1st and R

Hi I am getting frustrated with manual shifting in GT5. Unsure if it is my lack of understanding or experience in playing a sim racing game.
I have the Thrustmaster T500 and TH8 shifter.

When I am racing and either hit a wall or spin out, I throw the car into reverse and push the accelerator and I go nowhere! I have to put into neutral, push accelerator a little, back off accelerator, and then back into reverse throttle works.
After straightening the car I throw into first gear push the accelerator I get no throttle, even though I can see the throttle indicator climb and revs climb. I have to put back into neutral, push accelerator a little, let off accelerator put into 1st gear then accelerate.

Is this normal?

I feel thie is different to misshifting where I go from 1st to 2nd but get thrown into neutral because I haven't let off the gas/accelerator.

You need to use the clutch if that is happening.

Yeah thats gt5s version of stalling, when you press the gas and nothing happens realise there is no engine sound, you have to try and start like a real car where you gently let of the clutch and apply some throttle. To get the engine running in gt5 you have to be in nuetral or with the clutch down in any gear and press the accelerator, I think thats what you where describing.
