i know this debate has probably been aired many times, but hey i am new and seriously addicted to this game.
i have just got the altezza racing car and have a souped up skyline and corvette. I have done the enduro speedway and got some car. Is a F1 the way to go or what. I love how this game gets more involved the longer you play it. Geez, I haven't played Diablo2 for a week.
Anyway I just discovered this resource and its awesome.
But seriously does MT give you the edge on the more demandong circuits. Sorry if this causes mass flaming and search button responses.

Use the search button.

Hehe, jk, I personally go Automatic but that's just me. And yes, an F1 blows away the competition. I believe you can win one in any endurance.

First off, I prefer the auto. I used to use the manual on GT2. But on '3 I prefer not having to think about one more thing. With the auto I can pay more attention to proper braking technique.
In the immortal words of Mario Andretti: "Even at the F1 level there are drivers who think the brakes are for slowing a car down".

As far as F1's go. I believe that you should have a few in your garage for when you need to make a quick million cr. to outfit a car or three for a comp.
But to race in simulation mode in an F1 is kinda like Jean Claude Van-Damme inviting Dana Carvey into the ring for a little kick-boxing...

Dude, gil, that **** was funny as hell... jean claude van damn and dana carvy, what made you think of that? **** that was funny. lmao.

I actually think its a thing of experience.

Dont use the manual on your first try at the f1 circut, that would be silly.

But, use it after you have started to notice times that you would have shifted at a different time than the auto did.

I personally use the manual, but that is after using an auto for all of gt1, half of gt2 and now I am able to use the manual in gt3 with no trouble.

But like I said, it was long after becoming a good racer in the gran turismo series...

Trust me, you will know when its time to go to manual.

Dont force it, it will naturally come to you.

Slowly you go from using the auto to knowing when to shift each car solely based on the sound of the engine...

good luck and remember...

Dont rush it, the manual will come to you.

Go to either Free Run or Settings + Test, and test out manual there.

I use manual and acheive some quite good times compared to when im in auto.

My mate used to use auto an i would kick his but each time we compared times so i told him to use manual no he beats me.

I personally recomend manual for trying to get fast times but to beat GT3's useless AI, use auto cause it leaves less 2 think about.

I use manual trans. only. I find that in the manual mode you have a bit more versatility. Some cars, especially turbo cars, will start to lose boost pressure at higher RPM's, so being able to shift whenever you want is a bonus in this situation.
Also using engine braking in conjunction with your regular brakes while using a manual trans. allows you a bit more braking capabilities.
Sometimes I will use a quick downshift to help get a car through a really tight corner. The sudden downshift in a turn will shift more weight to the front tires and enable you to turn a bit more while slowing you down just a bit as well so that you can make your turn.

On the flip side of this coin, there is a man here by the name of "Made in Holland." He uses only a auto trans. and he is a very fast racer. I don't know how he does it, but he does do it well. My hat off to you Mischa. :)

As some people have said above, ATX or MTX is personal preference.

To me, ATX is best for someone like Gil who lets it do its job and take something off his mind. That's fine if that's what you do. As boombexus mentioned, some very fast people drive ATX.

But it if you are at the point where you're fighting with the transmission and need to prevent it from working automatically, then it is silly to drive ATX. I tried it for a few days, and I found it very distracting to wonder about what it was going to do next. Shifting feels very natural to me and it takes very little attention to shift when I want to shift, and to guarantee the car is always in the gear I want.

I use manual exclusively, but only as a preference.

I really don't know how using the manual can result in faster lap times since the Auto always shifts at the optimum point anyways, BUT, I like to keep it realistic and so I chose manual.

Likewise I have never tried using TCS or ASM before. I turn them off as soon as I get the car. I prefer the challenge and realism, despite the fact that a low TCS setting is probably better than good throttle modulation. But I don't need a computer nanny.

I use auto mostly. This might be because I would get lost trying to do the manual tranny shifting and watching the awesome scenery at the same time.

O, by the way, (dont know if anyone posted this) you can stay in one gear longer if you hold the r2 button down. The tranny wont shift. It's kinda fun to try it with reverse. If you go in reverse and hold the r2 button. You'll go in reverse if you press the gas pedal. That is, until you let go of r2.

I use automatic and manual. Both give me pretty equal times.
Equal times???
I've used AT when I first played GT2, but I've switched to MT very fast and I'd get better times with it!!
It's a fact that if u change gears on the right time... you're faster then when you use MT!!

I think manual is better. The auto is always playing catch up with your actions. If you use manual you already know what you're going to do and can shift accordingly.

Also I use it for controll. Take a corner a little too fast? Brakes going to make you skid into the wall? Downshift. I tough the brakes much much less using manual.

But I used auto for a long time before I switched. Now I couldn't do auto anymore.

yes i hear you all but i dont know if i am stupid or what but i can't for the life of me figure out how to get manual in my simulation races. please help!

i use AT cuz with MT i always forget to switch gears like ill go into a hairpin with like 5th gear lol really messes me up

whoever mentioned TCS ASM
have u ever driven a real car before??? those have TCSASM on my friends parents van has a tcs thing u barely hit the gas and its burning i sware bad stuff and if those were off in cars u kno how many more ''accidents'' there would becuz people would spin around the corners they would end up goin like 10 through town rather than 15 or 20

I use manual, but then that's because I like to throttle-steer, so I need to be able to keep the engine at high speeds. The AT sometimes does not downshift when I need it to, and there are times when that means I'm in the wall, when I could have fixed it with some savage throttle work.

I can concentrate on the race AND shift manually AND accelerate faster then you with AT!! :D
Just for a quick comparision, what are your average times with the 787B on midfield. I just want to compare my times with yours when I use AT and you use MT.

I'm not trying to be cocky right now, I just honestly want to compare.

I think what your talking about just above is more about who the racer is and not what transmission is.

Auto vs stick, fact is, the transmission is only faster if the racer is comfortable with it.

I personally believe that if you drive the stick to the fullest... it is faster than the auto.

I broke it down into a simple explaination a while ago.

Manual has more performance but its one more thing to concentrate on, Auto is One less thing to think about but it has less performance.

Personally, if your still starting out use Auto. Practice with Manual though as it can be better. Start learning to use it on easy tracks like Superspeedway and Test Course and Maybe even Midfield. Once you get the feel for it start trying it on more technical tracks like Laguna Seca and Cote D Azure. It takes some practice but its worth it IMO...

An AT doesn't always shift at the optimum point. Some cars run faster when u take them all the way to the end of the rev-line before shifting, while other cars run faster when you shift before the needle even hits the redline. There are numerous other advantages of using MT, such as being able to launch the car in 2nd gear or in instances where you are coming up on a corner and it would be more advantageous to keep the car in gear before you get to the corner instead of shifting up and losing a slight amount of speed and time. There are also other instances where you are in a real tight turn and you can just shift the car up into a higher gear and ride through the corner as opposed to having to fight vicious wheel spin.

I used to drive AT all the time back in the first GTs, but in GT3 I decided to make the switch and now I'm addicted. Its gotten to the point where if I'm running an Arcade race and I mistakingly select an AT, I will exit out the race just so I can go back and choose MT. Hehe, in the rare instances where I've tried to go back and drive an AT, I drive terribly and find myself trying to shift when I can't and lacking the maneuverability that comes with driving an MT. It has also affected me in real life as now I want the first car I buy to be a MT.

The bottom line though, like the last few people said, is that AT is better when you're just starting out and trying to get used to the basics of driving. But when you are ready for the next level and ready to pull in the faster lap times, make the switch to MT.
