I don't think every string of letters that's ever been put on cars are necessarily abbreviations...

A lot of times, the letters just sound cool, or intended to not sound exactly like their direct competitor.

GTi is Gran Turismo Injected.

Nope. "Gran Turismo Iniezione" (inny-ets-ee-o-nee), which translates to "Grand Tourer Injection".

GTE is "Einspritzung", which is German for "Injection", but can mean "Estate".
GTO is "Omologato", which is Italian for "Homologation".
GTA is "Alleggerita", which is Italian for "Lightened", but can mean "Automatic".
GTC is "Compressore", which is Italian for "Supercharged", but can mean "Coupe", "Cabriolet", "Compact" and "Crossover".
GTV is "Veloce", which is Italian for "Fast".

For Ford, ST means Sports Technology.
For Merc, SL stands for Sportlich und Leicht or in English sport and light. Then for SLK, K is Kurz as in short. For SLR, R stands for Rennsport meaning racing. Anyone knows what the last "S" means in SLS?

Dodge usually have something like RT or SRT or something. For example, Dodge Challenger SRT-8. Basically, SRT means Street Racing Technology and 8 is the cylinder. RT on the other hand means Racing Technology.

I'll speak to some of the GM names...

SS: Super Sport
RS: Rally Sport
442: 4-barrel carb, 4-speed manual, 2-exit exhaust
GS: Grand Sport
GN: Grand National
GTO: Gran Turismo Omologato (borrowed directly from Ferrari)

GM also has a bad habit of letting order codes become names for their vehicles. The Z/28 Camaro was an order code that eventually became a model itself, the same can be said of the former Z51 Corvette (an order code that had been around since the '80s).

BMW

330: 3.0 liter engine

328: 3.0 liter engine

335: 3.0 liter engine (w/ turbo)

👍

Fresh Touring Origination

What that means is something I don't know.

From what I've seen it's a bad JapLish name that was supposed to convey a young, hip, cool sporty car. I guess coming from Japanese it's translated as "fresh".

MINI's are pretty straight forward:

"S" stands for sport
"D" stands for diesel
"JCW" stands for John Cooper Works
"GP" stands for Gran Prix (apparently)

Porsche
RS: Rennsport
RSR: Rennsport Rennwagen

Renault
RS: renaultsport

Ferrari
(512)BB: Berlinetta Boxer
(250)TR: Testa Rossa
(512)TR: Testarossa

Honda
NSX: New Sportscar eXperimental

Mitsubishi
HSR: Highly Sophisictaed-Transport Research

Subaru
Sti: Subaru Techinca International

BMW

  • C = Coupe, last used on the BMW E46 and the BMW E63 (dropped after 2005 model year)
  • c = Cabriolet (eg. 320ci)
  • d = Diesel (eg. 320d)
  • i = Fuel-Injected (eg. 320i)
  • L = Long Wheelbase (eg. 760Li)
  • s = Sport (eg. 320si)
  • sDrive = Rear-wheel-drive (eg. Z4 sDrive35is)
  • x/xDrive = All-wheel-drive (eg. 320ix or X6 xDrive35i)

Mercedes-Benz
  • CDI = "Common-Rail Direct Injection" system for the diesel motors (eg. E320 CDI)
  • CGI = Petrol equivalent of CDI on some models (eg. E320 CGI)
  • 4Matic = Four-wheel-drive system (eg. R320CDI 4Matic)
  • AMG = Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach (eg. SLS AMG)

Honda's Si means Sports injected.

Toyota's MR2 stands for Midship Runabout 2-seater, and the MR-S on the third gen is Midship Runabout Spyder.

Not sure if it was the same back then but nowadays it stands for "Experimental Research <number of cylinders>". I think for the European Fords back in the day the number equated more to a size thing rather than cylinders.
