Something is actually telling me that 200cc purpose was to block Fire Hopping, therefore people can enjoy cleaning races while the Fire Hoppers can still Fire Hop in 150cc :P.

I have a feeling it will still be possible, but just not as useful.

Title updated for game-changer.

Can Mario Kart 8 be GOTY again? 200cc is a better addition than most PS3 remasters on PS4.

but but but... higher res and antialiasing and framerate and textures!1
It still baffles me how a terribly inconsistent choppy 60fps is somehow an improvement over an original game that might have ran solid 30fps.

I have a plasma hdtv and I have to start after 2 as well. Right on 2 and i always spin out.
Of course, not all HDTVs are made equal. Game design has become beholden to the lowest common denominator -- modern games tend to "fudge" things compared to the sharp gameplay of '80s/'90s classics. ;)

I wonder if 200cc was something they thought of from the beginning, and they're only deploying it now in a shrewd move to freshen up the game a year after launch.

Funny how such a little change, as an extra class. Changes everything :p. Compared to having "More Visuals, and Frame-rate". Which is what my PS4 Friends think is highly important

200cc is probably the biggest deal for me in regard to gaming in a few years. I've accepted the fact we'll never get a new F-Zero(or WipEout for that matter) and SEGA Racing Transformed was great but it's lack of polish and ugly frame-rate turn me off it.

Low and behold Nintendo show up with this gift out of nowhere! It's such a big deal because we have no idea how this will affect the game. In typical MK8 update fashion, I'm sure we will get some tweaks elsewhere in the game too, could we get a hardcore mode that gets rid of the Blue Shell, Coin and Bullet Bill all at a blistering 200cc? Who knows.

@Wolfe I actually like to believe that the popularity of For Glory in Smash and the much hyped skill-gated modes in Splatoon are making Nintendo realize that their games have transcended what they were supposed to be. They are still fantastic with friends of course, but there's always been a dedicated fanbase for the likes of Kart and Smash.

This is all theory of course, even if it is just 200cc in the next update I will be happy.

Why Hardcore Mode, when we could just have an option to turn items on and off...

...though the only item I would turn off is the 🤬 Fire Flower.

Since you guys are talking about TTs, I gave the mode another shot and challenged @Classic on one of my best tracks. Only now I have my own heavy-class character to use:

I guess, I'm the only non-Heavy TT user. (I use Yoshi, most of the time).

I prefer medium characters, but then it's a chore to be competitive. If it was hotlapping instead of the 3-lap format, I'd be more willing to keep at it.

I'm more into choosing characters based off characters than based off stats. The Heaviest Character I use is Waluigi but that isn't often. I don't like sacrificing things I like just to get a measly win :p.

That's why I did the Character Bonus in the first place though, because I know the Characters are not balanced, so extra points would be awarded to players using slower characters.

Third party amiibo support confirmed? I was convinced Sonic and co would be strictly used for Smash.

You can already turn off items if you make a custom race. Probably not for ranked though but who plays ranked anyway.

I usually don't go any lower than the DK Waluigi Rosalina Roy class when racing. I guess I'm just so used to their feel.

Unless I'm TTing GCN Sherbet Land where I use Daisy for her weight class traction bonus.

@Wolfe Guess I've got some improving to do! :D Nice time!

I use Toadette for the most part, occasionally Daisy.

Finally surpassed 10000VR yesterday. :D Now I feel ready for 200cc.

Welcome to the club! I'm stuck at 14300VR at the moment. Had some moments where sometimes everything goes well and I make silly mistakes, or I just get bad luck with items.

The brutal -20+ you get for placing last is terrifying too...

Good games in that worldwide @Classic. Sorry if my hopping was annoying to you. :guilty:
It was actually mind-blowing to watch an expert at it!

Nice races my friend, glad we could finally join a room together.

I used Luigi for the heck of it. I figured since you use Daisy, might as well go for it. :D

I'll try and get some fun screen-caps from MKTV of the duo!

EDIT: This is a nice one!

In my opinion, fire hopping isn't much of an issue in racing since the items balance it out for the non-hoppers. It's TT where most of the problem lies.

I guess I'm the only one who uses Bikes, too (White Yoshi - Jet Bike - Slim Wheels for me :P). I will sometimes hop on an ATV and a Kart too but I like the feel of inside drifting in this game

Although it depends of the definition of an 'issue' I would still say that fire-hoppers have an incredible advantage over regular racing, I think @Doodle would echo my sentiments after some of the insane leads he had over a room of regulars in a few of the races we just did, there's also certain areas in every track where it is incredible to see the difference fire hopping makes.

To be fair I got pretty lucky with the item luck, considering earlier today I was getting awful luck. I was able to get a big enough lead early on that everyone else would get catchup items rather than the annoying triple reds and such that would slow me down. :P That's just part of the reason fire hopping has a huge advantage pretty much everywhere, it makes a huge difference when racing in higher level worldwides. I used to use inward drift bikes all the time, but I was at such a disadvantage I pretty much forced myself to learn to fire hop and demon slide properly.

Time trial speed is very important in this game because of the unpredictable item system. Getting away from the chaos early on via hopping and sliding gives you a huge advantage.

By the way, do you suspect that Braking or just letting go of the Accelerator will be required on some tracks in 200cc? I don't think I'll be able to get through that U-Turn in GBA Mario Circuit without going on the grass.

This Leads me to another questions, will this new class effect the 2 drifting types, because I can see Inside Drifters having a much more better time on some corners than Outside Drifters
