They aren't getting KERS this year are they?
But they're not expecting to fight anyone directly. What's the point of having KERS to attack and defend if they aren't going to do it? Their objectives for this year are to leapfrog HRT in the WCC standings (which they fully expect to do in the opening rounds - HRT are anticipating it, too) and to close the gap to Caterham so that they are in a stronger position for 2013. They actually have a three-year plan so that they can be fighting for points at the first Russian Grand Prix in 2014.The added 30kg of complexities can help them in defending and gaining positions.

And they think that the easiest way to do that is to concentrate on developing the aerodynamics. KERS doesn't just give you a half-second advantage per lap. It comes with all manner of challenges - it's 30kg of fixed weight, it's a complex system, and the slightest fault with it can effectively turn it into a brick. Every minute the team spends trying to figure out KERS is a minute that Marussia feel is better-spent trying to improve the aerodynamics of the car. So whatever benefit there is to be gained through KERS, it is offset by other disadvantages. Good aerodynamics with no KERS is always better than KERS with bad aerodynamics, and that is the assessment Marussia had to make. No, I'm not saying that they're going to fight with everyone on the grid but if they have decided to be ahead of the HRT, they need to be ahead and finish ahead of the HRT in the races.
I thought they weren't using a steeped nose? Or am I missing something here?

The HRT cars have KERS, surely it's still too early to say this because we really have no idea how fast both of these cars will be but according to logic (assuming their pace are about the same and no reliability issues involved), even if they qualified ahead of the HRTs, they need to be fast and they need to defend their position against the HRTs. In order to do that, they must have the KERS to defend/fight in case if they lost a position to HRT unless as I said, the Marussia car is able to pull of a Sebby V first lap and run away from the HRTs. Otherwse, the HRT will get them at the start, on the first lap or anywhere and just escape with the help of the KERS.
The way I see Marussia at the moment is like, they are going to war with a greater number or armies but no weapon to defend and fight against their main rival.
At least though, HRT are not using KERS till later in the season - they have designed their car to accept it but have chosen not to use it yet due to their lack of testing.

I'm surprised that Marussia aren't running KERS this year, with their main rivals Caterham and HRT choosing to. Especially with a technical partnership with McLaren.
