Can somebody tell me how to solve this problem?

6y-(3y+6)=5y-4

I guess expand the bracket, assuming the '-' is '-1', getting 6y-3y+6=5y-4. Then just solving like a normal equation...

Not too sure if I remember correctly how to do this but I'll try.

6y-(3y+6) = 5y-4
6y-3y-6 = 5y-4 (Simplify the first bit, I don't remember all the correct words to use)
3y-6 = 5y-4
3y = 5y+2 (Add 6 to both sides)
-2y = 2 (Take 5y away from both sides)
2y = -2
y = -1

Edit: Beaten to it

I knew you were supposed to distribute the -1 to the parentheses (that's what you did first by the way).
