The speed limit on most highways here in the US is set at 70mph, which means most cruise anywhere from 70-80mph.

I don't know what magical land you live in, but the speed limit on most US highways is 65mph, and in some areas it is still 55mph. Only a small number of highways (mostly in the west) are 70mph.

Somebody really hates my guts here, oh well.

Thanks for reminding me M5P.

As I said:

I'm sure we all know our stopping distances (according to "They") at 60mph. What's your stopping distance at 115mph? If you don't know the safety margin, why are you driving that fast? On public roads?

Can you accurately judge distance with your eyeball at 60mph anyway? I doubt you can at 60 any better than at 115. I'm also willing to bet you don't always drive the proper safety distance behind every car for the given speed. C'mon man....live in reality. Besides all that, is stopping distance from another vehicle really important, when there's no vehicle in front of you?

daan
He asked a question about speed limiters by saying he was driving at 115mph.

That doesn't change the question, regardless of your opinions about his choices.

daan
We're talking about 115mph. 15% faster than 100mph

I guess to you, that's significant.

daan
He was driving at 45mph above the speed limit. You might want to use a calculator.

I don't need a caculator to use my OWN examples. People were commenting on how dangerous 100+ speeds were. Not every one of my responses were based on his origional speeds.

daan
What car? Going 156mph is not beyond the car's capabilities, but it's above yours for driving on a public road where the speed limit is 70mph.

In my personal car. Nowhere in my comment did I state where or if I exceeded those speeds. I respect the rules here. You know nothing my capabilities, my car's capabilities, nor my racing locations.

daan
Only 15mph above the limit now? It's 45mph above. Arithmetic not your strong point?
Still just an example of the exaggerated paranoia of individuals like yourself. Do try to keep up with the conversation.

daan
He's lucky he never. A car doing 45 mph faster than other traffic is a dangerous, deadly weapon.
So is perceived intelligence.

That's true, PA is a backwards state that still keeps that lame 55mph. Down here it's all 70mph once you leave the city limits.

No but if he hadn't mentioned the speed in question, then there wouldn't be this whole argument

I know you meant your personal car because you said "My car". I meant what make and model.

You stated
Lethalchem
It's now been raised past the car's capabilities
I was pointing out that 1mph above the speed limiter is not beyond the car's capabilities. I did not suggest that you did exceed capabilites, but if you were to, then a public road is not the place to exceed capabilites.

Lethalchem

The conversation has changed from the original question, to a thread about how stupid it is to do 115mph in a 70 limit. Do try and keep up.

I swear, this forum is filling with a lot of morons lately...

If you're going to sit here and defend this punk kid for racing at 115mph on public roads in a car not meant to handle that kind of stuff, and then come here and ask why he can't go FASTER, then you truely are stupid or dense or both.

And Pennsylvania is 65 son, shows what you know...

Lethalchem

I can. Can't you? If not, why are you driving around on public roads?

Lethalchem

I'll take that bet. Let's ask daan, shall we? After all, he has been a passenger in my car on a few occasions.

Lethalchem
C'mon man....live in reality.

Ah - that'll be the reality where you can drive as fast as you like, while being unable to judge distances and not maintaining a safe gap to the car in front?

I prefer the one with roadworthy drivers in it.

And your "race locations" have no bearing on public roads.

Lethalchem
Besides all that, is stopping distance from another vehicle really important, when there's no vehicle in front of you?

A typical, short-sighted response from people who think they own the roads. Stopping distances are THE most important thing after car maintainence. There may not be a car in front of you now - but at 120mph you will catch and pass, inside of a minute, a car which was a mile up the road doing a legal 60mph. Then of course there's sudden obstacles (separated tyres from lorries being a favourite on motorways), wind sheer, people being where they shouldn't be - and so on.

As I said, while it is not inherently dangerous to drive at speeds exceeding the posted limit for the road, you will significantly decrease your ability to avoid dangers and significantly increase the chances of you - and most importantly those around you - being injured if it does all go wrong.

But still, do you know how long it will take an average vehicle to come to rest from 115mph - or 185km/h for our metric acquaintances - (Highway Code assumes a constant braking force of 0.75g)? If not you shouldn't be driving that fast on our roads and endangering other people.

daan

I'm sure you are quite correct about that. Which is a shame. I feel his comments helped clarify his quandry though. Some people may not know that cars have speed limiters, or what they do.

daan
I know you meant your personal car because you said "My car". I meant what make and model.

Sorry, it's in my sig. I assumed you saw that. I have a modified 2003 SVT Cobra.

Gotcha. My missunderstanding of you comments then. My bad.

Given that I'm 5000 miles away and generally drive at or about the speed limit, I doubt it. And if I am "in your way", you're going too fast.

Yes, I'm sure I am. :sly:

The difference is in where we live. In this city, you go 10mph faster than the posted speed, or you get run over for being an obstacle.

daan
You can't make what you are doing "legal" by comparing it to that. They are on a closed road. You have traffic to crash into.

When i used to do that and I did it atleast 3 times, and not anymore, it was at 3:00am and there was no traffic. And on those 3 occations I only saw like 2 cars and both were on the opposite side of the freeway. I wouldnt dare do that during the day, its too dangerous. But hey call me what you want I could care less what other people think about me or say about me, so have at it.

Klostrophobic
You evaded the cops and got caught going 120 on different occasions on the same stretch of road?

How the **** do you keep your license after being caught going 120?

I was doin 120 and the cop painted me while he was on the On-ramp, I eventually slowed down, and that's when he caught up to me...He only gave me a 85MPH ticket though...Coo cop

here...Inner City freeways are 55, usually cruise at 60-65 since that's the standard speed anyway (if you don't see a posted limit go 65 rule)......65MPH in the outskirts..Then the interstates between cities are 75

I know a few cops (not corrupt ones like some here in L.A) and they know about these types of forums, and they know people like to speed at night. Especially here since they got that entire new program to stop speeders, but i asked one of them, he works for the West Covina Division and he said, if there isnt much traffic, say 2 or less cars, then most cops, not all wont stop them. But if they are doing say 150mph on a highway that has enough traffic then yea, but i mean why go down on me when Ive seen cops do well over 100mph without lights on, cutting thorugh traffic and what not, and then about 10 minutes later up the road they are just driving normal again. All i asked was about the Speed limiters and not the speed I was doing, if you werent on the same road I was in, dont worry about it. If I dont endager your life, dont worry about it. But hey everyone's entitled to their opinions and thats why I love these forums, you can argue and just have a good time arguing about it, and know that you'll get smart arguments at that. Good forum. And I've been called a moron, stupid, punk kid and all this other stuff. And well thank you. But your just wasting your time because I really dont care what anyone thinks about me, as I said before. Its all good though. Oh and another question, I dont know if they are true but is it true that the highway that goes from L.A to Vegas didnt have a speed limit until recent times? and by recent I mean like the 70's, 80's and 90's???

Lethalchem

Because he posted a similar topic in the Rumble Strip bragging about doing 115mph with his Stratus against the likes of Ferraris, Porsches, etc on public highway. And it's an unmodified Dodge Stratus. It doesn't take much thought to understand why it's not meant to do 115mph.

Scooby, the freeway is not your personal race track, and even at 3am, NO highway is truely and completely empty.

Not only that but you are racing against others, meaning that there is indeed people there.

If you want to drive fast, go find a race track. Regardless of some idiot cop might say about it being ok, it is still illegal, and it is still not allowed to be discussed here, so stop arguing, and your "I don't care what others think" attitude will quickly change when you injure you or someone else. 👎

If someone else is racing with you, they're taking the same risk you are, so you're putting them in danger just as much as they are themselves, and they should be aware of the possible consequences...If you want to go fast, where would you sudgest? Not every town has a race track..a 1/4 mile doesn't allow for a V6 rechipped automatic car to shine like it might on a highway....Not everyone is in Utah to speed down the salt flats.....The Highway is the only place and safest place ALOT of people have to do 100+MPH....I know it's a ****ty rationalization, but it's dead true...But let's stop this discussion before some innocent kids get banned for reffering to illegal events.

the freeway was empty at that time. the first time i did it I saw no cars. the 2nd time only 3 and the 3rd none. And I never said I was racing againts others. I was alone. I saw some headlights behind me but they never caught up. And those replies about the ferrari and porsche, I wasnt racing againts them, i was just trying to see if the car was capable of doing the max speed it said it did and i was passed by them both. Want to get angry get angry at them I bet they were doing 130+, I was only going 115 and it was only for about 3 or 5 minutes, by then the limiter came on or whatever and I was back at 80. And hey do you really follow ALL laws?? why? i follow them 2 but not all of them. And hey i will continue to argue as long as I feel like it, so dont try to tell others what to do. 👍 👍 👍

Why???? Because a 18 year old doin 120 and having a blowout and dieing is bad...but a 18 year old doing 120 though a school zone then plowing into a house on purpose is worse.

oh....:) true. I dont do that anymore, it was a short lived thing. But yea Ive seen idiots go really fast through school zones or not stop when someone is trying to cross the Street (cross walk or not) and its really sad to see, but hey I live in Los Angeles and I see this everyday. oh and one thing that really gets me mad is when your going say 69mph or 70 and someone is doing about 59 or 60, and you go and try to pass them or go around them, and they speed up to about 80mph and well it just turns ugly then? is it that some people here are as_wh_l_s or what? does anyone here live in Los Angeles and has experienced this before, or worst things?

But yeah people are just A-holes my grandfather used to wave people on to pass, then speed up..So....Just twisted senses of humor, or an overall sense of performance driving.."I won't let you get to where YOUR going before I get to where I'M going"

LOL!!! Mexicanitis,, thats awesome!! LOL:lol::lol::lol:. im half mexican and yea Ive seen that alot. all what you said, TRUE, especially here in L.A. wonder why though, I've driven down in Mexico city and SOMETIMES its not a problem, but other times......bus drivers think they are driving a dam porsche and you just have to try and stay on your road and let them through.

Nice avatar by the way.

yawn this is getting boring,

let's just say none of will speed and leave it at that.

but it wasnt about speeding, it was about the speed limiters, just some took it the other way. the thread should have been done when the answer was answered, so can someone close the thread, its getting to be about a different subject all together.
