first i want to thank all members for sharing there knowledge and experience of gt4. playing gt4 for months i thought i had a solid understanding of tuning and the behavior of my cars. my girlfriend's dad is a part time racer in an ohio racing league, and he has helped me understand suspension theories as it relates to the game. now my problem...

generally when i tune a transmission i set my auto setup to a relatively high number and work it down. now from here i'll tweak my final gear ratio and down the line i'll go. it just seems i'll leave engine power unused, and that leaves me with an under-acheiving engine and a car with more potential than actual performance. i want to maximize torque and overall speed, but can't seem to find a happy medium. :banghead:

if anyone can help please let me know. also, besides the test track, is there a track anyone uses to measure perfomance? i use midfield quite a bit.

thanks to everone who contributes to gtp, it is the most helpful site on the net.

I use the so called "trannytrick" to get better torque numbers. Start with sliding auto to max, then Final to max, and slide auto back down to 1. The adjust final to your desired length. And maybe adjust the gears separatly too. there are however cars where this will not work, since the auto 1 will be too low when you adjust the final. In this case, set auto to a higher number accordingly.

midfield is good testtrack. Of course the ultimate one is Nürburgring, but that might be a bit long...

I use Midfield, since it has a good balance of corners of most types and of straights.

The Nurburgring is a high speed course, and it has too many corners for people to get good consistent laptimes. It earn's my vote for the most enjoyable track, but not for tuning.

As for transmisson tuning, the "Tranny Trick" is good, but it's not the best way.

thanks team666. i tried and liked the tranny trick with my rx7 bath. it alot easier than my very long time consuming method.

.duck. what is a better method than that?

if you want to share methods here feel free to. all advice is welcomed

Midfield and Apricot Hill are good tracks with a variety of corner types, straights and elevation changes.

Deep Forest is my personal favorite test track, it's also a good place to test suspension (sort of a miniature Nürburgring).

For lightly & mildly modified road cars, I try to find out what the gear ratios of the real cars are and set them to that (often using the auto to get everything into the right range). Then I adjust only the final diff ratio as per what's available irl to suit the track, ie for Borg Warner diffs in GM cars there's 3.07, 3.46, 3.73, 3.91, 4.11, etc.

In real life the easiest way to change your transmission speed is to change the diff gears as changing individual gears is not practical in anythng less than the highest levels of motorsport. Keep in mind that for most cars, depending on the total number of gears, usually 4th gear is 1:1 ratio, ie 1.000.

This doesn't necessarily produce the fastest settings, but generally it does work and suits the relevant cars quite well and psychologically it 'feels right' to use the proper specs ;)

I actually do do a lot of testing on The Nurburgring, simply because that's what I mostly drive on and I know it well enough to know what speed I should be able to expect out of certain sections of the track.
This applies to any track and if you really want to get the most out of a particular car you will need to tailor its gears to each track. There are some tracks that are almost the same, but the top speed on the fastest straight usually determines the gears.

If you are tuning for races, dont forget to leave a bit in reserve for slipstreaming.

im always trying to get the gears as good as possible and this is my way:

put auto setting to the maximum, slide final gear ratio to the max. then put auto setting to 1 (tranny trick as said before) and then. slide final gear ratio back until u see that the tip of the last gear is in the upper right corner. its more easy to see differences between gears if u spread out the ratio thing.

then u start with making 1st and 2nd gear as long as possible(although i prefer 2nd gear best at 90% of max length, also depends alot per car / amount of torque), and then u slide the last gear to the minimum. so then 1st and last gear are as close to eachother as possible.

now, make 3rd gear about 80% of maximum length(rough guide-line, i use my ears to listen to the sound when i shift if the length of the gear is right compared to the others..) and adjust the other remaining gears in the same way so that all gaps are even between gears.

from this point u have the perfect base to fine-tune ur gears even further.

the cool thing about this methode is that the 1st 3 gears are very long and acceleration is at its best, so maximum efficiency is reached.. normally traction-control would have held back the hp, but now u accelerate equally fast with less shifts, so u lose less time. and ofcourse topspeed will be higher aswell 👍 and theres another + aswell, using manual gears becomes more fun cos the gears are closer to eachother and it really gives a more realistic feeling . :)

Damn Powerslider, I thought I had invented that trick! ;)

I also use max 1, max 2 and min last gear, it helps keeping the car on the powerband all the time.

hehe, its too bad that setting up the gears like that takes like 3 minutes but its worth it 👍 its so cool to have a car do 100km/h in 1st gear without having too high topspeed :D
