Just wanted to know what it's like being a Moderator? I've been made one at a different forum (didn't ask, because I'd rather earn the posistion) , and don't really want to abuse the privelage without realising it. I presume it's alot more work than just banning people and closing threads, (although I have a feeling this one may be closed). Any sort of advice avaliable to make sure that I don't mess up?

Thanks.

Each forum and website will have different guidelines and expectations. Perhaps you should contact the forum administrator at the forum you are a moderator of to clear up exactly what you will and will not be responsible for.

Like Jordan said, you'd really want to learn the guidelines set by the webmaster/admin, because they do vary widely from forum to forum.

Personally, I think one key aspect is to step in when necessary... sometimes, a person just needs to let off some steam to keep from exploding, and that's understandable. You just have to be able to judge whether they're having a stressful moment, or if it'll be a chronic problem. Obviously, this is a bit easier to judge with more established members than newer ones.

Good luck, and congrats for the promotion! :)👍

About like this.

I hate to think that moderators around here are always on the lookout, I mean, it's cool for them to join in on the fun but when it goes past a certain point they have the authority to stop whatevers going on. I don't like to think that the mods around here are too quick to stop people having fun/mucking around.

What do you guys think?

We're considering banning those who show humor. Particular on the subject of moderators.

You have to take your feel from the Owner/admin to see what they are thinking about the site. But one thing I will say is don't be afraid to be active in enforcing the rules, once you know what those rules are. I've seen on many forums where the mod staff was nonexistant or very apathetic, and they have all imploded. Even one called www.flameaway.com (sadly deceased, now) which was established as a place where you were supposed to take arguments off of other boards.

As the others have said, most of it just comes from common sense. But remember, a certain number of the users are going to think you're automatically a fascist bullyboy any time you do your job, no matter how carefully and justifiably.

Don't do it drunk.
Don't do it in haste.
Remember that you speak not only for yourself, but also for the board, whenever you post something.

I think we have the best moderation staff I've ever seen in any internet community.

Well, nearly... I think you're one appointment short of the Elite moderator crew...

Hey! I'm gonna have to warn you for breaking a TOS rule! :p :D

We have a good team here, it's true.

Congrats to those lucky enough to receive their positions..

Don't worry about it, though - you'll only be banned for two days. And when you come back, if you show humor again, you'll be banned for "life", as long as your life is two days, because that's how long you'll be banned for.

I was wondering what the difference between a 'moderator' and 'super moderator' was? Like PunkRock is a moderator and say, vat_man is an "sm". Do super moderators get to wear capes when they go online, what's the deal?

I'd definately make an exception for you Doug. I'd ban you forever and ever and on till infinity.
Ya know we're tight like that. We go way back, so I'd do that for you.

Just let me know, and I'll click that "ban" button for you buddy. ;)

Well, then you have to enter his name in the search field, then confirm it... ugh, so much work! You people have no idea!

:D

I know.

Don't worry though Sage, I've been flooding Jordan's PM box, and his mail box, with messages beseeching him to implement my suggestion for GTP6, namely the inclusion of a "ban this mofo" button on every post.

Most excellent. :trouble:

See TVRKing, other than the tedious work of banning people, you've got nothing to worry about! :D

Whoa. I would have to resign my position as SM if something like that was ever implemented - I'd just be too tempted to use it on every asshat on the forum.:trouble:

Why not just put the n3wb33z avatar onto every one of them instead? That way we know who to ignore.

Being a moderator is entirely different from being a super moderator; you can't do the fun stuff like banning people, and you don't get the cool tag beside your name... You can, on the other hand, still ignore people.

If I can do it, you can do it. Then again, i don't moderate the biggest part of this place either, so i can't really talk. I thought loads of pressure were going to be involved, but such isn't the case, thankfully.

man, i swear this is the "all mods, super mods, etc let out all your humor so you can be a stiff in the other forums" forum.:p

except for duke, who's always got humor:lol:

i dont kiss ass, im just brutally honest:lol::lol:
