Flame this mini review all you like, but what I am about to say is from my point of view, there not facts in anyway.

I am using the PAL verison of the game as I am in Australia.

Last night I finally unwrapped GT5:P, loaded it on to my PS3 and went through the dreaded update process, which thanks to someones tip in this forum went smoothly once I tried his advice, but still was a pain.

So here I am sitting here in the opening screen, the home interface, and I actually don't like it, it seems "to" different, to much of a change from previous versions of the game, but it could quite easily be something I can get use to.

I brought my first car, the Honda Integra, made my way to the C Class races, picked a random race and off I went. 2 laps in it came quite evident that that AI is the same old, stick to that racing line like glue to be honest, all seem to break at the same time to. Immediately the game is starting to bore me, it seems the same as the last version just prettier.

The Physics of the car were good, cars seemed and handled stiffer than before, this took a little bit of getting use to with a controller but with a wheel it was easy to get the hang of, so in general the handling was probably even more realistic, especially with all aids turned off.

Now the sound, most love to hear roars of engines, and if you have any sort of descent home theater then you won't be disappointed, put the sound settings on to large theater and crank it up, the engines are superb, however the music is a lot less desirable.

I worked my way through C class and moved on to B, was racing on the Daytona infield track, where the funniest thing happen, I saw the AI make the first mistake, I was in 6th place and all 5 ahead were in there usual straight line in front, we came to the first corner where first placed car rang off the road and span out, I thought, wow they make mistakes, however the next 4 cars did the exact and I mean exact same thing, now I am thinking, well done PD.

So I left single player and went on to the Arcade time trials, where I post my fastest lap times online, and the top ten for that car/track are recorded and you can view there lap replays, great feature, was racing the Cappuccino around London and got second, viewed the first place video and he jumped/cut every corner he could, where as I made only that mistake once, if I raced like him I could maybe make up the small difference in time, so I am still happy with my effort.

Now on to all the things not "racing", there is a lack of car details when buying a car, I can't view any stats about a vehicle, can't test drive or anything. And in your garage, the way they have it set up is so poorly done, you can't filter most stats, only by power and when obtained.

Graphically the game is stunning at 1080p, I did occasionally suffer slow downs, but never ruined my racing experience, thats all I am going to say about the graphics as thats all that can explain it, the word "Stunning".

If I was to sum this up now, as I am, because I have to go out for a while, I would say that the game is graphically gorgeous, interface is lacking any real details about anything, AI is boring and lame, it needs fixing. Online has potential, and if PD were to add private rooms and custom races etc, it would be grand. Sound is brilliant as usual from PD, no problem at all there.

If I had to rate it our of 10, I would give it a 7.2, for $60 Australian we need more PD, a few more tracks, slightly smarter AI, maybe a few more cars, some detail/stats and I think it's going to last until the Full GT5 hits our PS3's.

Nice quick review I liked it....I still can't beleive people are saying the "SOUND" is good. From what I have seen in video's etc.. the sound is far from good lol.

Great Little review there, From what I play AI (Japanese) has improved slightly over GT4, But I think I like it, Since there are so many races, it would be too hard for me to race vs TOO smart AI each time :)
I think you wrote your review a bit too soon? You have it for about a full day and night. Maybe you are just scratching the surface? Play around a bit more :) see if you get into it a lot more.
Yes we need Private rooms for more excitement as well as you say. As well more car specs, but as they all say, its only a Prologue, and PD can NOT throw everything in a supercharged demo.

Sincerely put IMO, you liked the physics and graphics that's great cause it's most important. For AI we have the cure now it's called ONLINE Racing! I apreciate you had the time to share it with us. :)
And I'd like to see more reviews from people who played.

Im sorry but GFX is not the most important, gameplay will always be the most important. But I must add that sound is "JUST" as important as GFX if not more important. There is nothing worse then playing a game with poor sound. Im not saying this game has poor sound but it definetely doesn't live up to the GFX side of things in this game.

Perfect example of good sound is a game called "Frontlines Fuel of war". There GFX are not the greatest but they have an amazing sound engine. That have implemented "SPEED OF SOUND" into the game. So if you blow something up into the distance you will see the xplosion first and hear it after, and this will vary in different ranges aswell. You hear every little crackling sound, echo's, gunfire in the distance, it just keeps you coming back for more to hear these great sounds.

Anybody know if those top 10 leader boards are region specific? Like, is the JP leader boards seperate from the PAL leader boards?

From just about everything I've read, I'm lead to believe that the sounds are much better in person, especially if you have a surround sound system. Uploaded videos are typically limited to stereo sound at best, but usually mono.

I'm sorry to hear that the music (still) isn't very good.

Music in Gran Turismo has always been HORRIBLE. BGM volume 0 FTW.

I might invest in a surround sound system just to hear this game as it's meant -- even from terrible quality YouTube I can tell some of the cars sound pretty decent. I am personally in love with a certain video of an in-car ZO6 Corvette runaround...

I have a 5.1 for GTR2, sure they sound real but at the same time they don't. Sound is high def in GTR2, Some cars sound fake too. No wonder there are so many patches for sounds ;)
Besides, Only real sound from GTR2 is when Engine starts up, you can really feel the car, after that its in game low quality sound..

Well your probabley the first person I have ever seen saying that GTR2 sounds are not great. I have played the game and I love the sounds. They are amazing!.

Im no fanboy of either game or console, or PC, I just enjoy a good racing game. I play them all (or have played them all lol)

Oh I did not wanted to say they are not GREAT :)
But they are not in High def :(
Also, When you start the car up, Volume up your sound system, you can really hear great engine ROAR.. after that, press on GAS you can still hear it but its not as high def as starting up the car.. :(

Few notes:

The AI issue you witnessed is plainly weird, having played through the japanese version and now running through the english version I haven't had any such problems. Well not with the whole field anyhow. I did notice in one race that I re-did about 7 times on all bar 2 occasions this 1 car would spin out at the exact same spot so there are flaws in the AI but what happened to you sounds bit more like a once off for the whole field to go kamikaze.

Also I really think the biggest flaw regarding AI in GT is that the game doesn't let you overtake appropriately and race as a normal racer would. Some racers are simply designed for "car bashers". What I mean by that is that if you drive with no consideration for other cars and ram yourself through which is how some people actually play (eg. online) the race works well for you. But if you try to play the game "properly" you are rushed and the AI seems to be full of morons when really it's because of your own driving style (i've tested this and noticed the AI seem to be better if you actually take your time and overtake appropriately and don't do any forceful moves to take out cars behind you. A perfect example is the cuppuchino time trial race, the cars actively drive around you and brake if you are clearly blocking their path)

It does suck that stats are not as they were but it is prologue so I never expected them to be. Not sure if you have seen it but the most important factors (power, torque, weight) are all shown scrolling on the bottom of your screen when you view the car in the "showroom" view.

I actually think in reference to the way GT5 Prologue looks menu and interface wise is probably more of an introduction to what Arcade mode will look like rather than GT mode.

Stopped reading the review at the AI.

For one I think the new menu is great. Vast improvement on the bitmap of old. Its sylish and easy to navigate, I dont see whats not to like about it.

Secondly the last race I was in last night I had some good battles with the AI and made a few places when they made mistakes. Hardly sticking like glue to the racing line.

Play the game more. For now your well off the mark.

Your entitled to your own opinion, and thats all it is.

For me, it was kind of refreshing to actually see the A.I making huge "mistakes", though like you there are races where I've noticed the A.I always makes mistakes.

In the High Speed Ring Gran Tursimo all stars race in A class, where you start 16th and have 5 laps to take the lead, I came around the banked corner and in the distance saw all this tyre smoke... turns out it was a Corvette that had hit the barrier and was spinning severely. This hasn't happened again yet, so hopefully that proves it wasn't a pre-determined thing.

I'm playing the game on an SDTV unfortunately and the interface is much more laggy than previous GTs, obviously because of the live highly detailed 3D backgrounds, but I can live with it. I agree with you on the stats issue, I wish there was a more conventional way to view them all. Also, the load times between interface screens sometimes drives me nuts, but again this is something I'll learn to live with.

I'm not a huge fan of the overtake all cars in one lap events, TBH, I hate them. But that's where my complaints end. The rest of the game is excellent and the in car view is so awesome, it's breathed new life into the GT series for me.

I haven't raced online yet, have to poke a few holes in my router first, though I've read the horror bumper car stories. Private races will rid us of this problem though. :)
