Flame this mini review all you like, but what I am about to say is from my point of view, there not facts in anyway.
I am using the PAL verison of the game as I am in Australia.
Last night I finally unwrapped GT5
, loaded it on to my PS3 and went through the dreaded update process, which thanks to someones tip in this forum went smoothly once I tried his advice, but still was a pain.
So here I am sitting here in the opening screen, the home interface, and I actually don't like it, it seems "to" different, to much of a change from previous versions of the game, but it could quite easily be something I can get use to.
I brought my first car, the Honda Integra, made my way to the C Class races, picked a random race and off I went. 2 laps in it came quite evident that that AI is the same old, stick to that racing line like glue to be honest, all seem to break at the same time to. Immediately the game is starting to bore me, it seems the same as the last version just prettier.
The Physics of the car were good, cars seemed and handled stiffer than before, this took a little bit of getting use to with a controller but with a wheel it was easy to get the hang of, so in general the handling was probably even more realistic, especially with all aids turned off.
Now the sound, most love to hear roars of engines, and if you have any sort of descent home theater then you won't be disappointed, put the sound settings on to large theater and crank it up, the engines are superb, however the music is a lot less desirable.
I worked my way through C class and moved on to B, was racing on the Daytona infield track, where the funniest thing happen, I saw the AI make the first mistake, I was in 6th place and all 5 ahead were in there usual straight line in front, we came to the first corner where first placed car rang off the road and span out, I thought, wow they make mistakes, however the next 4 cars did the exact and I mean exact same thing, now I am thinking, well done PD.
So I left single player and went on to the Arcade time trials, where I post my fastest lap times online, and the top ten for that car/track are recorded and you can view there lap replays, great feature, was racing the Cappuccino around London and got second, viewed the first place video and he jumped/cut every corner he could, where as I made only that mistake once, if I raced like him I could maybe make up the small difference in time, so I am still happy with my effort.
Now on to all the things not "racing", there is a lack of car details when buying a car, I can't view any stats about a vehicle, can't test drive or anything. And in your garage, the way they have it set up is so poorly done, you can't filter most stats, only by power and when obtained.
Graphically the game is stunning at 1080p, I did occasionally suffer slow downs, but never ruined my racing experience, thats all I am going to say about the graphics as thats all that can explain it, the word "Stunning".
If I was to sum this up now, as I am, because I have to go out for a while, I would say that the game is graphically gorgeous, interface is lacking any real details about anything, AI is boring and lame, it needs fixing. Online has potential, and if PD were to add private rooms and custom races etc, it would be grand. Sound is brilliant as usual from PD, no problem at all there.
If I had to rate it our of 10, I would give it a 7.2, for $60 Australian we need more PD, a few more tracks, slightly smarter AI, maybe a few more cars, some detail/stats and I think it's going to last until the Full GT5 hits our PS3's.
