The 2008 Mazda 2 has been spied in testing as rumors of a State-side release continue. The Mazda 2, known in some markets as the Demio, is currently only available in Europe and Asia where it has been a success for Mazda. The B Class car has been the topic of much speculation after it showed up at the 2004 NAIAS in Detroit. The five-passenger compact is rumored to be arriving in the United States for the 2008 model year. More details are expected soon.

All I know is that the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa better watch their backs. Given the Mazda preference for "Zoom-Zoom," this could be a very exciting addition to the American small-car market. What is important to note is that this is the Fiesta underneath, so could Ford maybe consider an importation of that model as well? That has yet to be seen...

Mazda, you've sparked my interest, so how soon can I expect to see one?

That interior is simply awful, I must say. Overall look of the car is pretty awkward, as well. I'm a long-time Mazda fan, but I really don't like this. Even so, I suppose it's better than that whole "Nagare" thing...

Hmmm. It looks like a tall hat. Very uncool. (This coming from a Mazda 3 owner.)

That could be just a preproduction interior. What they offer in Aussie-land is

But I'd agree with the above posts that it generally is a letdown, when compared to the excellent Mazda3, 6, and CX-7.

EDIT: Especially if it is anything like the Fit, which I thought was really disappointing.

I can't judge the interior based on those pics... could be greasy, moist or covered in pre-production plastic... we won't know until the official car comes out.

The Mazda2 will probably feel more like a big car than the Fit... but it'll be about 200 pounds heavier, possibly slower and less economical, too. It might be a good match for the Versa, being another "big boy" in the small car segment... maybe an overwhelming match, actually.

Sure, it'll be good... probably feel more like a "real car" than anything in the segment, but if Mazda doesn't give it better engines, it won't be a match for the Fit in sales. People buy these things for economy... not enjoyment.

Heard that! :ouch:
Definately an ugly look. 👎
I like that interior pic of what they get down-under.

In any case, I think the Nissan Versa is a much better looking car. 👍
(not that looks are all that matter)

I don't understand why manufacturers are still putting "clear" tail lights on cars. Does the general public really like them so much? This fad sure is lasting a long time...

Is that James May in the back?

...Don't forget about crazy "Look at me I'm a Scientologist!" Tom Cruise behind the wheel...

---

After reading up on the car a bit more, I do have to wonder what engine they will chose for the the American model. The most powerful gasoline engine puts down only 100 BHP, and would need at least another 10-15 to be able to keep up with the others in it's class should the weight be that high.

Pricing may be an interesting game too. You can get a bare-bones Mazda 3 for pretty cheap here in America, and at least at my local dealers, they like to bend the pricing just a bit for new customers. So I guess I should put it this way...

Reno < Mazda 2 < Fit Sport (based on what I've heard)

Am I the only one who doesn't think that the spy shot looks anything like the car in the picture? The roof profile is all wrong, the car is too tall and the rear is too sloped. In addition, the door profile slopes up more on this than on the Demio, and there is no possible way that the taillights are the same.
To wrap up? This is NOT the Mazda Demio unless they are restyling it completely as well when they bring it over here. Though perhaps this is the next gen Mazda Demio. But it is clearly not the current gen one show in the picture.

Ditto, the lights are completely different and the back looks nothing like the Mazda 2. The headlights look familiar, for some reason I keep thinking Toyota despite the Mazda badge on the wheel, but they're not Mazda 2 lights.

Well, the new model is supposed to debut in 2007 according to the Wiki...

Yeah, I also hear that MKII Focus is coming to the States!(for the same reason)...... but seriously, I'd love to see that happen. Looks of this "2" doesn't really do it for me, so I'd love to see a sexier looking Fiesta at the Ford Dealers. I'm holding my breath, waiting. :D

I realize the interior is preproduction plastic, but look at the design. It looks like it was designed by Logitech! Absolute rubbish.

However... looking at the exterior shots, it's clearly a completely different car from the current model, and it appears it'll be much better looking. I agree it's similar to the Yaris, but I think the roofline, and especially the angle of the rear glass, are a bit nicer than the ones the Yaris gets.

Sage got it right, the other pictures where pics of the mazda 2 of NOW.

The second set looks much better IMO. May even take a look at one as a second car.

The first thing I thought of with this Mazda 2 deal is the Demio (is it still sold?). For my Gran Turismo people, the Demio was the first car you used in the first license test in GT1 and maybe even GT4 as well. I can't look beyond the spy tape, but I can really hope Mazda can infuse some excitement and some spunk into this deal. I'm sure this car will do pretty well... unless the soccer-moms-in-Hummers fad persists.

Actual "2" that we are getting looks sweet! It's little smaller than I thought though, deathtrap? I still might consider looking at it.

This, according to LLN.com is the supplied "sneak shot" for the new Mazda 2 that will show up in Geneva in the not too distant future. Apparently we are looking at a worldwide launch of an all-new Mazda 2/ Demio (for those who keep asking, it is the same model, but it is only called the Demio in Japan). So are we getting it? Maybe. But things are looking better...

Ooops...I'll make note of that in the title...

Thanks to Sage (by the way, congratulations on your five years on GTPlanet) and YSSMAN, I can make a better comment on this thing. There is a little Yaris in its design. But overall, it's a wonderfully-styled... I guess you could call it a mini or a supermini. Very peppy car. You know what you're getting out of recent Mazdas. You're getting excitement and sports car-like handling and performance. This could very well be the compact Toyota, Honda, or even Nissan doesn't want you to drive. Just be sure to give me one in a royal blue color.

Woo, a new Fiesta in Zoom-zoom attire. Kinda toy-like, and looks to be heading in Mazda's new direction just as the Fiesta's doing Ford's, but I like it 👍

Wow, I really like that. Really clean lines, looks like it is screwed together pretty well... Best of all, it isn't a Toyota!

I know there were some preliminary worries over the interior, but it looks pretty nice overall. Clean and functional, it kinda reminds me of the way Volkswagen used to do their cars.

But this is a bit confusing...

The car that will form the basis of the new baby Ford for the US market will make it's first public appearance in Geneva this week...

So, we're getting the Fiesta too? I thought we were getting the Mazda2 anyway?
