It looks really promising. With competitive pricing, I think it could possibly compete with the Scions, which probably has much larger dealer network. Thing that bothered me in the article was that this car should arrive in the States by 2008? Media's been reporting about Suzuki Swift for a while now as well. It's been like couple of years, where the heck is it? To me, Swift is the best looking car in class by far!

I can't wait to see the Ford one. It should be interesting.

Awesome. Now make a mazdaspeed version with the 2.3 turbo and give it AWD, remeniscent of the 323 GTX!

Hmmm.... Mazdaspeed2 turbo charged 1.5 L unit with about 220 hp? :D

Its about time there is a sporty sub-compact! 👍

The On-Again, Off-Again Mazda 2 is Maybe/Probably/Definitely Coming to the US in "Late 2010"

Well, that's what Autoblog has learned

Autoblog
This just in: that fantabulous little Mazda we've admired from afar for the past couple years, the Mazda2 (also known as the Demio in Japan), is coming to all of North America, the U.S. included. President and CEO of Mazda's North American Operations Jim O'Sullivan has just told the automaker's top dealers that the diminutive Mazda, which shares its platform with the also incoming Ford Fiesta, will go on sale in the U.S. around the end of 2010. That's just about the same time that the Mazda2 will go on sale in Canada, as well.

O'Sullivan cites the changing tastes and attitudes of consumers towards smaller cars as shifting the business case in favor of selling the Mazda2 here in the States below. While no other information was given, dealers were told they can expect to see the North American-spec Mazda2 debut later this year at the 2009 LA Auto Show.

What this means for Ford and the similar-in-almost-every-way-but-styling Fiesta remains to be seen. Knowing that the Mazda2 is on its way, would you reconsider buying a Fiesta in favor of test driving the same thing with a little extra Zoom Zoom?

Hmmm. The story just became more interesting, especially in light of the Fiesta coming in a matter of months. I'd think the Fiesta would be the better choice in light of it being the newer vehicle, but that would be up to Europe to tell us. I just hope that the strange Mazda face doesn't ruin the car when it arrives.

That is a nice looking car.... :) But I'd rather take a Peugeot or something else...

rather take a Peugeot? that's almost like saying you'd rather take an STD!

Although, I don't think it will work too well in the US, unless the Fiesta scores bigtime first.

Well... I can take a VW Golf GTI... Peugeot is good mate because my dad own one 206 and... I know it looks a bit girly but seriously that car is very comfortable!!!

Aaammm... can I ask you one thing?? What is STD?? Seriously I don't know what is that...

EDIT: Damnit! I was trying to be a smartass but no- I think thats what Leonidae actually meant. :grumpy:

That green the Mazda 2 comes in is the worst colour in the world, yet half the dolts who buy them get it in Kermit green, and it's just plain ugly.

Best colour for it is the dark metallic grey:

It's also one of the few cars with 3/5 door options that I'd actually pick the 5-door as I think it helps the car's proportions. It's a very good looking small car, much more coherent than the gloopy Fiesta. I prefer the interior too. And when I drove the Mazda2 1.5 Sport and current MX-5 back to back, albeit briefly, the 2 felt remarkably similar to the MX-5 which I consider quite an achievement for a supermini. It drives very well indeed.

Would it work in the States? Maybe. Mazdas are quite popular out there and the 2 is more than up to the task of competing with say, the MINI. That it's slightly older than the Fiesta that's based on it shouldn't really matter as it's still a fresh design. The petrol engines we get over here seem very economical yet still perform well, and of course there's always the 1.6 turbodiesel engine too which is supposed to be a great engine.

Damnit. Years of playing Gran Turismo have this car FIXED as the Demio in my mind. Kinda like the IS300/Altezza.

If I get one, It'll likely get JDM badges. Shameful me.

I got to drive one of these round a tight, twisty track as fast as I liked at the Motor Show and they handle very well. They're very fun to throw about and have enough go to feel nippy in a straight line too. It was another car that I considered before the 500.

Here's to hoping we get the Mazdaspeed 2!!! Mini Cooper S watch out!

I think the standard car lowered on slightly larger wheels would look better myself. The front end of the Mazdaspeed model looks too wide to me.

That was where I drove it too, and in that brief time I was very impressed indeed with virtually everything about it. If it had a steering rack as quick as the one in the MINI it'd be the perfect small car.

I definitely want to try one on the road at some point. Might find my nearest Mazda dealer. Now that I'm a Mazda owner, I guess too...

"I'll be a GTR when I grow up!"

Those fenders are endearingly out of place. Now is this just a photoshop or actual car?

EDIT: It showed up at the Tokyo Auto Salon, but that's it. Can't find any specifications otherwise. Judging by the stripe, I'd guess this is not a factory kit, more a representation of what would happen if you bought a Mazda 2 and added everything. It's tasty regardless.

You'd get more luck finding it under "Mazdaspeed Demio", as per this google images link. It's apparently just a concept for now, and indeed the car in the photographs even has an automatic transmission so probably isn't the last word in performance.

This AutoExe one is quite cool too though:

I like it. For me any chuckable hatch with a manual transmission is epic win. And if this gets a Mazadspeed version with a turbo omg do I ever want.

If You Wanted to Know What the American Version Looked Like...

According to Jalopnik, it'll be here in the summer, just after the Fiesta is out in full-force. No word on pricing or packaging, but I'd expect it to be a little more expensive than its Ford cousin, maybe drive a little better too.

Still, I prefer the Fiesta. Go ahead, hate me.

What exactly happened between the pics above and that?

I guess it's just another case of Ford making drastic changes essentially ruining the car's looks before shipping to the US.

Its all about the corporate identity, mostly based on this:

Difference is, of course, that the Mazda2 change is far less-offensive than what happened with the Mazda3 updates.

It doesn't look that bad in this picture, and that is very scary, because I see one all the time in real life.

That isn't just what the US version will look like. It's also what the rest of the world will get, which means it's another recent Mazda that looks slightly worse than it's predecessor (alongside the facelifted MX-5 and the new 3). That said, the 2 hasn't suffered as much as those two.
